*King of the Yees* is a play by Lauren Yee (*Mother Russia*): a “kind of true” story about a woman trying to understand her father's past.

Playwright Lauren Yee refers to *King of the Yees* as a kind of true story. It is not uncommon in theatre for artists to tug at their own past and dramatize it on stage, as with examples from memory plays like Tennessee Williams' *The Glass Menagerie* and Brian Friel's *Dancing at Lughnasa* to more contemporary examples like Mona Pirnot's *I Was Most Alive with You*. But *King of the Yees* stands out because of its distinct setting — Chinatown in San Francisco — and distinct voice.

Zooming in on a fraternal organization that the character Lauren sees as an obsolete relic, the playwright Lauren uses the journey to uncover past secrets as a way to theatrically trace a family lineage. When her dad goes missing, Lauren embarks on a journey toward home that she never could have foreseen. Hilarious and moving, *King of the Yees* is about what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.

Get *King of the Yees* tickets to see Lauren Yee's acclaimed play back on stage. *King of the Yees* stars Kelly Marie Tran (*Star Wars*) and Tony Award winner Francis Jue (*Yellow Face*) as a daughter, Lauren, and her father, Larry, who go on a twisting journey to rediscover one another. A celebrated play that has been seen around the country, *King of the Yees* plays for a limited time at Signature Theatre, where Yee is a resident playwright, starting October 6.

In *King of the Yees* off Broadway, Lauren Yee has written Lauren, a character who is a lot like her. Larry, her father, has been the soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s Chinatown, for two decades. But one day he mysteriously goes missing, igniting a rare kind of journey where Lauren, a playwright in New York, must rediscover who her father is, and how she fits into her unique family tree.

*King of the Yees* in New York is a heartfelt, funny, and highly theatrical piece about family lore and lineage. In focusing on a subsection of the Chinatown community in San Francisco, the play examines disappearing cultures, family legacy, and the poetry of self-discovery. Audiences can expect moving performances from Tran and Jue, two stars who sync up as child and parent in this play that is Yee's autobiographical-ish work.

The cast also includes Jon Norman Schneider, Maureen Sebastian, and David Shih. A writer for TV shows like *Billions* and *Pachinko*, Yee is an award-winning playwright known for *Mother Russia* and has won honors that include the Horton Foote Prize and Kesselring Prize. Princess Grace Award winner Joshua Kahan Brody directs this new production.

Don't miss out on this special work of auto-fiction. Tickets to *King of the Yees* in New York City are now on sale.

Signature Theatre revives revered actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith's seminal work Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. The second production in Smith's continuing Signature residency, this timely and powerful work examines race, class and division in America with fierce insight and intensity. Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon. The Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 play documents the 1992 Los Angeles riots and their immediate aftermath. The unrest was sparked by the acquittal of four police officers who were filmed brutally beating Rodney King, an unarmed DUI suspect struck fifty-three times by police. The officers' acquittal inflamed existing social and ethnic tensions within Los Angeles, leading to six days of rioting, 63 deaths, 2,383 injuries and over 12,000 arrests. Smith conducted over 350 interviews with individuals involved in or affected by the unrest. From those interviews, she created Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, a verbatim piece made up entirely of real people's accounts. Smith crafts an exhaustive and nuanced picture of an event variously described as a riot, a revolution, or a social explosion. Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 off-Broadway is equal parts meticulously researched reportage and stirring cry for reform. Following its first production in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in 1994, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 transferred to Broadway's Cort Theatre, where it ran for 72 performances and earned two Tony nominations. PBS later filmed the show, again starring Smith, for television broadcast. Signature continues Smith's Residency One program, which offers audiences an in-depth experience of one artist's body of work by staging at least three of their productions over a period of five years. Tickets to Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 tickets will be available soon.
