Based on the award-winning 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* follows a couple whose world is turned upside down by true love and passion in turn-of-the-century Paris. The writer Christian and the courtesan Satine fall into a forbidden backstage romance at the titular nightclub — until Christian realizes there’s more than just the villainous Duke putting a stop to their relationship.

Between 2002 and 2003, shortly after the *Moulin Rouge!* movie got a Best Picture Oscar nomination and two other wins, rumors started to fly about a stage adaptation. Those rumors faded, but finally proved true in 2016, when *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* was officially announced. Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo led the show’s first workshop in 2017, and they went on to star in the 2018 world premiere in Boston and the 2019 Broadway premiere.

Both received Tony nominations for their performances, and Tveit and Danny Burstein (as Harold Zidler) won awards. *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* also swept the design categories, winning for set, costume, lighting, and sound design. The musical’s cast recording also got a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

## What to watch for

- In the movie, Christian is an Englishman. In *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway, Christian is an American fleeing the Industrial Revolution in search of artistic purpose.
- Baz Luhrmann, who directed and co-wrote the iconic 2001 film, came from a very artistic background. His mother was a ballroom dance instructor who gave him lessons early on, and his father insisted he study painting and music.
- Luhrmann says director Alex Timbers “feels like a younger cousin,” and Timbers says Luhrmann’s work inspires him. Luhrmann has watched performances of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway and is a keen supporter of the show.
- *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is loosely based on two classic stories. One is Puccini’s opera *La Bohème*, also about bohemian friends in 20th-century Paris. The other is the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus, a talented musician who seeks to rescue his true love, Eurydice, from the clutches of Hades. (The Broadway musical *Hadestown* is also, and more directly, based on that myth.)
- The *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* set contains homages to the film and the real Moulin Rouge. The iconic elephant-shaped dressing room and red windmill from the movie are recreated here, and both are also hallmarks of the actual nightclub.
- One of the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters, a bohemian artist named Toulouse-Lautrec, was a real French artist well known for creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge. Similarly, the character of nightclub owner Harold Zidler is partly named for the real club’s co-founder, Charles Zidler.
- The *Moulin Rouge!* film is part of Luhrmann’s “Red Curtain Trilogy” of movies with the performing arts — theatre, dance, poetry, song — as a major theme and storytelling tool. The others are *Strictly Ballroom* and *Romeo + Juliet*. Like *Moulin Rouge!*, *Strictly Ballroom* has become a stage musical in the U.K. *Romeo + Juliet* hasn’t yet joined them, but you never know!

*Moulin Rouge!* is based on the hit film of the same name, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. Premiering in 2001, the film became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its flashy design, fun combination of pop songs, and dreamy setting. Underneath the glitz is a purer story of art, ambition, and love. A celebration of bohemian France and an artist’s soul, the musical transforms the Broadway theatre to become “euphoric — a shower of fireworks and confetti,” per The New York Times.

## What to watch for

- The show is a feast for the eyes: it won 10 total Tony Awards, including Best Choreography and Best Scenic, Costume, Lighting, and Sound Design.
- “Moulin rouge” translates to “red windmill,” and you’ll see that and so much more in Derek McLane’s amazing set, which also features Satine’s elephant-shaped dressing room.
- *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is loosely based on two classic stories: Puccini’s opera La Bohème, about bohemian friends in 20th-century Paris, and the tragic Greek myth of lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. (The Broadway musical Hadestown is also, and more directly, based on that myth.)
- One of the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters, a bohemian artist named Toulouse-Lautrec, was a real French artist known for creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge. Find out what baking can do at *Waitress* on Broadway! *Waitress* tickets in New York are on sale now.

The *Waitress* musical follows Jenna, a small-town waitress who bakes pies to escape her anguish at home. When Jenna finds out she’s pregnant with her abusive husband’s baby, her fellow waitresses and best friends Becky and Dawn want to do anything they can to help her get out of her bad situation. Dr. Pomatter, her new gynecologist also offers moral support, with the pair striking up an unexpected romance. Jenna’s also inspired to enter a pie making contest in the hopes of winning a large cash prize and escaping with her child. Jenna plucks up the courage to start a new life, but realizes how her home comforts can improve too.

Based on Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film starring Keri Russell, *Waitress* on Broadway tells an emotional story about the power of female friendship and family. The show marks the Broadway composing debut of singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, with a soulful score that will empower you to love yourself and make the change you need to make in your life. Her original score features comical songs, heartfelt duets, and soaring ballads that mix a traditional Broadway-pop style with Southern flair.

Directed by Diane Paulus and featuring a book by Jessie Nelson, the show was nominated for four Tony Awards in 2016, including Best Musical, and audiences flocked to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre for over three years. Now, after just over a year away, *Waitress* returns to Broadway, this time at the Barrymore Theatre. So why not bite into Waitress in New York? After all, it only takes a taste before you’ll fall for these characters — and their pie.

## What To Watch For

- The future is female! *Waitress* on Broadway is the first show in Broadway musical history to have an all-female creative team, featuring director Diane Paulus, composer/lyricist Sara Bareilles, and book writer Jessie Nelson.
- Did you know the scent of freshly-baked pies wafts around the auditorium? A real apple pie bakes in a convection oven in the theatre at the beginning of each show for an authentic aroma, and miniature pies in mason jars are sold at the concession stand before the show and at intermission. Stacy Donnelly is the pie consultant for the show.
- Thirty-two real pies are onstage each week, and each pie lasts about 3-4 days, before a crew member takes it home to enjoy.
- Composer Sara Bareilles reprised the role of Jenna at the start of the *Waitress* Broadway revival. She first played the role in spring 2017, and has also released an album of her singing the show’s score called *What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress*.
- Wish you could be a baker like Jenna? Now you can! There is an official cookbook for the show called *Sugar, Butter, Flour: The Waitress Pie Book*, and it features 40 different recipes, such as Big Guy Strawberry Pie and My Husband’s a Jerk Pie.
- After original cast member Nick Cordero died of Covid-19 in 2020, the onstage menu board was updated to include "A Big Ol' Slice of Live Your Life Pie," named after Cordero's original song "Live Your Life." The menu item will be included on all future productions of *Waitress* on tour and beyond.

The musical officially opened at New York's Brooks Atkinson Theatre on April 24, 2016, following previews from March 25.One of the dominant themes in Waitress is female empowerment and the production aptly made Broadway history upon opening by becoming the first ever Broadway musical to have four women in the four top creative team spots, with a book by Jessie Nelson, choreography by Lorin Latarro, direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus and a score by Tony and Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles.Bareilles, who had previously received Grammy nominations for Love Song and her album The Blessed Unrest, among others, also released her own studio recording in 2015 entitled What's Inside: Songs from Waitress.
