In *The Imaginary Invalid*, Argan (Bill Irwin) plans to marry off his daughter to a doctor so he can benefit from his medical services. However, his brazen daughter has a mind, and heart, of her own: one that may not align with Argan's carefully laid plans. With fearless ensemble and brilliant production directed by Broadway veteran Brandon J. Dirden, The Imaginary Invalid illuminates the comedy of trying to make plans, especially when a family has multiple differing ones in store.

Irwin is one of today's most singular talents given his work as a film star, theatre buff, and professional clown. Audiences will remember him from his Tony Award-winning turn in *Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* or in screen roles like *How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Sesame Street, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Legion, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation*, and others. From procedurals to blockbusters to stage dramas, Irwin is one of entertainment's most versatile performers.

## What to watch for
- Roundabout is known for their star-led revivals, as with last season's *Fallen Angels*.
- In addition to his Tony, Bill Irwin has won an Obie Award and the National Endowment for the Arts award.
- Recently, Irwin appeared in *Rustin, Old Hats*, and *The Andy Warhol Diaries*.
- “The season Scott Ellis and I have shaped builds on what Roundabout has always believed: that theater can hold the classic and the urgent side by side,” Roundabout Artistic Director Christopher Ashley sad in a statement.

Get *The Imaginary Invalid* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this hilarious comedy adapted by and starring Tony Award winner Bill Irwin. *The Imaginary Invalid* in New York City opens Roundabout Theatre Company's 2026/27 season in a fresh production directed by stage vet Brandon J. Dirden. The play reimagines Molière's uproarious comedy about a man who indulges every ailment, proving, centuries later, that hypochondria never goes out of style.

*The Imaginary Invalid* plays at the Todd Haimes Theatre this fall. In this comedy, Argan (Irwin) fears every little perceived malady, so he concocts a plan: he will marry his daughter off to a doctor in order to save on his medical bills. However, his daughter has plans of her own. *The Imaginary Invalid* stands the test of time, reminding audiences that reality is what happens while you and your family are making other plans.

This will be the theatre company's first season led by Roundabout’s incoming artistic director Christopher Ashley, who collaborated on season planning with interim artistic director Scott Ellis. “As we welcome Christopher Ashley into artistic leadership, this season is a bridge, grounded in what Todd Haimes built, and intentionally making space for Chris to shape what’s next,” said Ellis in a statement.

Roundabout is known for its starry revivals, as with last season's *Fallen Angels*. Now, Irwin returns to Broadway in this major revival of Molière's hit. Known for his work on stage, screen, and in clowning, Irwin is one of entertainment's titans and most versatile performers. Some of his credits over the decades include *Old Hats, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Sesame Street, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Legion, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Rustin*, and others.

Tickets to *The Imaginary Invalid* on Broadway are now available.

Todd Haimes Theatre

The Todd Haimes Theatre was originally designed by George Keister as an Italian Renaissance-style theatre. The venue opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, named for its developers, Edgar and Archibald Selwyn. The first show to play there was Jane Cowl's *Information Please*.

Over the course of its history, the building has been used as a theatre, a cinema, and a visitor center until it fell into a derelict state of disrepair. Roundabout Theatre Company took ownership of the venue in 1997, but the building collapsed, so the company rebuilt the Selwyn as part of the New 42nd Street Building in 1999. The theatre was renamed for American Airlines on June 30, 2000; the company donated $8.5 million to help cover renovation costs.

On February 1, 2024, the venue was renamed in memory of Todd Haimes, the artistic director of Roundabout Theatre Company from 1983 until his death in 2023.

## How to get to the Todd Haimes Theatre on Broadway

The Todd Haimes Theatre is situated on 42nd Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway. By subway, it is accessible by the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S lines to 42nd Street.
