Once upon

In *Once Upon a Mattress*, a sinister queen has plans, or lack thereof, for her son's marriage: keep him single as no one else is worthy. Enter Princess Winnifred, Fred for short, and from the swamp, no less. The queen ruthlessly rules over the faraway land and declares that none can marry until her son weds. Challenge accepted: the queen puts Princess Winnifred through multiple tests, and the not-so-refined Fred champions each with her verve, wit, and enough volume to wake up the whole kingdom.

A raucous and hilarious comedy that’s also an update on a Hans Christian Andersen tale, *Once Upon a Mattress* features an indelible score from Mary Rogers and Marshall Barer with crowd-pleasing show tunes including "Sensitivity," "In a Little While," and "Shy." The musical first debuted on Broadway in 1959 and has enjoyed countless productions; now, after decades, it returns to Broadway with its own royal treatment: Broadway queen Sutton Foster as Princess Fred.

## What to watch for

- TV icon Amy Sherman-Palladino, who created *Gilmore Girls* and *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*, adapts this time-tested story to give it fresh life.
- Sutton Foster is one of Broadway's most famous leading ladies and, as in *Once Upon a Mattress*, she has a long history of playing strong female characters who feel no need to be demure as they pursue what they want most: love, success, and honor. Such previous roles include Fiona in *Shrek*, Reno in *Anything Goes*, and the title role in *Thoroughly Modern Millie*.
- Michael Urie is having a bang-up year on Broadway after finishing his run in another starry revival, *Spamalot*. Now, he returns to another musical comedy with *Once Upon a Mattress*.
- Director Lear deBessonet is also the artistic director of New York City Centers, which stages concert versions of favorite and sometimes forgotten musicals. Previously, she directed *Into the Woods* on Broadway, so she is no strange to remounting classic works.

Get *Once Upon a Mattress* tickets to see Broadway royalty Sutton Foster star as a princess who's anything but shy. The upbeat revival of the hilarious musical *Once Upon a Mattress* runs for a limited time only.

Get *Once Upon a Mattress* tickets to see Broadway icon Sutton Foster take on another brassy leading lady: Princess Winnifred. Tony Award nominee Lear deBessonet (*Into the Woods*) directs this Broadway revival, which also features *Ugly Betty* and *Spamalot*’s Michael Urie as Prince Dauntless following the production’s sold-out run at New York City Center. Six-time Emmy Award winner Amy Sherman-Palladino updates the libretto, and this writer is no stranger to working with Foster: in addition to creating hit TV shows *Gilmore Girls* and *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*, Sherman-Palladino also wrote *Bunheads*, which Foster starred in. Get *Once Upon a Mattress* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Experience *Once Upon a Mattress* on Broadway, playing at the Hudson Theatre for a limited time only. A beloved musical composed by Mary Rodgers, with a score that put her on the map and proved she more than inherited her legendary father, Richard’s, songwriting chops, *Once Upon a Mattress* follows Princess Winnifred as she aims to win Prince Dauntless’s hand despite his mother’s obstacles. The queen declares that no one can wed until Dauntless does... while simultaneously making it impossible for anyone to get near her precious son.

A hilarious update on a Hans Christian Andersen tale, *Once Upon a Mattress* has been a community theatre and high school staple since its 1959 Broadway bow, and now, after decades away, it returns to the Great White Way.

The musical helped make Carol Burnett a star: she originated the role of Princess Winnifred, later played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Now, Foster, Broadway royalty in her own right, takes on the cheeky role. A “joyful” production per the New York Times in a Critic’s Pick review, this new production of *Once Upon a Mattress* warms the heart, tickles the funny bone, and is packed with hummable earworms. Tickets to *Once Upon a Mattress* are available now.

See Sutton Foster star in the acclaimed revival of the musical *Once Upon a Mattress*. Michael Urie joins the Broadway legend following the sold-out run of *Once Upon a Mattress* at New York City Centers.

Sutton Lenore Foster was born on March 18, 1975 in Statesboro, Georgia. She is a two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway actor, also known for her television role as Liza Miller on TV Land’s Younger.

Raised in Troy, Michigan, Foster attended Troy High School but left before graduating to join the National Tour of The Will Rogers Follies under the direction of Tommy Tune. She would also go on to study at Carnegie Mellon University for one year before departing to pursue a full-time career on the stage.

Foster’s most notable early stage credits include the leading role of Sandy Dumbrowski in the National Tour of Grease in 1995, which led to her Broadway debut, assuming the role at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 1996. She would also appear in the 1997 Broadway revival of Annie and 1997 Broadway premiere of The Scarlet Pimpernel. In 1999, she took over the coveted role of Éponine in the national tour of Les Misérables, later transferring to the musical’s Broadway production in 2000.

Her big break came later in 2000 after finally landing the starring role of Millie Dilmount in the La Jolla Playhouse production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Following her turns in regional productions of The Three Musketeers in San Jose and South Pacific in Pittsburgh in 2001, Thoroughly Modern Millie would ultimately premiere on Broadway in 2002 to great acclaim, earning Foster her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Thanks to her new leading lady status, she became a regular on the Broadway stage and starred as Jo in Little Women (2005 Tony nomination), as Janet Van De Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone (2006 Tony nomination), as Inga in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (2007-08), and as Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical (2009 Tony nomination). She won her second Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her turn as Reno Sweeney in the 2011 Broadway revival of Anything Goes, which also led to her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album in 2012. She earned yet another Tony nomination in 2014 for her portrayal of the titular character in the Broadway premiere of Violet.

Foster’s Off-Broadway credits include the 2010 Second Stage Theater production of Trust and a Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Award-nominated performance as Charity Hope Valentine in The New Group’s 2016 revival of Sweet Charity. She has also performed in a plethora of benefit concert productions on Broadway as well as Encores! productions at New York City Center. She also starred as The Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods at The Hollywood Bowl in 2019.

As a recording artist, Foster has also released two studio albums: Wish in 2009 and Take Me to the World in 2018, along with one live album, 2011’s An Evening with Sutton Foster: Live at the Café Carlyle.

Hudson Theatre

Hudson Theatre - TodayTix

The Hudson Theatre first opened on October 19, 1903, with *Cousin Kate* starring Ethel Barrymore. Although the firm of J. B. McElfatrick & Son first drew up the architectural design of the theatre in 1902, the firm of Israels & Harder ultimately took over and completed the project. The venue was built for theatrical producer Henry B. Harris, who managed the theatre until his death as a passenger on the RMS Titanic in 1912.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the building was also used as for CBS Radio broadcasts when it wasn't being used for theatrical productions. NBC purchased the property in 1950, converting it into a permanent television studio. The venue housed *The Tonight Show* from 1954 to 1959.

Over the next few decades, under the ownership of developer Abraham Hirschfeld, the building was used for theatrical productions (1960 to 1968), as an adult movie house (from 1974), and as the Savoy rock club (from 1980). The Hudson Theatre was awarded New York landmark status in 1987.

Millennium & Copthorne Hotels purchased the Hudson in 1995 as a part of the surrounding luxury hotel known as the Millennium Broadway and used as a business conference center and auditorium. During this time, it was additionally used as a stand-up comedy venue for Comedy Central broadcasts.

In 2015, Ambassador Theatre Group purchased the venue as its second official Broadway venue, following the [Lyric Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/lyric-theatre-ny). After fully shutting down and undergoing a major renovation, the Hudson reopened in 2017 with a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical *Sunday in the Park with George,* starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Since the theatre first opened in 1903 and reopened from scratch in 2017, the Hudson is simultaneously Broadway's oldest and newest theatre.

In *The Book of Mormon* musical, Kevin Price is raring to go on a two-year mission to Orlando, Florida. But he’s shocked to be paired with the less-than-popular Arnold Cunningham and instead sent to Uganda, where no missionary has successfully converted anyone. Price is determined to do what no Mormon has done before, but Cunningham connects with the locals best once he starts “Making Things Up Again” on his own.

Technically, you could say the history of *The Book of Mormon* goes back to 1830, when the Mormon Church was founded. The musical is a little newer. Parker and Stone started working with Lopez in 2003 after seeing his Tony-winning Best Musical *Avenue Q*. The *South Park* duo wanted to make a *Book of Mormon* movie, but Lopez insisted on making a musical.

The show’s first reading was in 2008, and an Off-Broadway world premiere was set for 2010. The producers canceled that production to give the creators more time to refine the show. Premiering *The Book of Mormon* on Broadway directly was a leap of faith — and it paid off.

*The Book of Mormon* got 14 Tony nominations and won for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, and more. The show also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and the London and Melbourne productions won Best Musical at the Olivier and Helpmann Award ceremonies, respectively.

## What to watch for

- At one point in developing *The Book of Mormon* on Broadway, the writers thought about killing off Elder Price at the end of Act 1. However, that idea was quickly scrapped, as killing off the lead character wouldn't work in a musical comedy.
- Robert Lopez, who wrote the music and lyrics, is the youngest EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner in history. Robert Lopez received his second Tony for Best Score for *The Book of Mormon*, and at age 36, he won his fourth for Best Original Song for “Let It Go” from *Frozen*. He also became a double EGOT when he won his second Oscar for "Remember Me" from the Disney film *Coco*.
- Parker, Stone, and Lopez took a trip to Salt Lake City and spoke with real Mormon missionaries as research for the musical. They definitely said "Hello!"
- The song “All-American Prophet” used to be called “The Bible is a Trilogy." The original title is referenced in Elder Cunningham’s line “Wow, so the Bible is actually a trilogy, and the Book of Mormon is *Return of the Jedi*.”
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took out advertisements in the program with taglines like “You’ve seen the show, now read the book” and “The book is always better.”

In *The Book of Mormon*, Elder Cunningham and Elder Price — absolute opposites who don’t start off as the best of friends — can’t wait to start their mission. Dreaming to head to Orlando, they are instead assigned to Uganda. A spoof on the wild rules of religion and a masterful execution of the buddy comedy, *The Book of Mormon* lets no one off the hook in its satirical look at faith, friendship, and some other choice F-words. With a dirty mouth and a dearer soul, the musical is meant for adults, even if it has a childlike sense of wonder.

## What to watch for

- Robert Lopez, who wrote the music and lyrics, is the youngest EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner in history, and he’s also a double EGOT winner.
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints once took out advertisements in the program with taglines like “You’ve seen the show, now read the book” and “The book is always better.”

## What is the *Book of Mormon* musical about?

*The Book of Mormon* is a musical about Elders Price and Cunningham, two Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda to convert the locals. (It's a far cry from Orlando, Florida, where Elder Price hoped to be sent.) Poverty, injustice, and an oppressive warlord made the villagers lose faith in God long ago — but the elders are determined to succeed, even if it means bending the teachings of the holy book a little.

The Book of Mormon premiered directly on Broadway, unlike most musicals that play off Broadway or in a different city first. But the outrageous musical comedy immediately took Broadway and the rest of the world by storm when it opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in 2011. The New York Times hailed The Book of Mormon on Broadway as "the best musical of the century." The show went on to collect nine Tony Awards that year, including Best Musical. Original cast members Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad (Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, respectively) became instant Broadway favorites, and Nikki M. James picked up a Tony for starring as Nabulungi.

The musical's score is best known for its the signature introduction number, "Hello," where the Mormons greet the audience. Other fan favorites include the outrageous and infectious lament "Hasa Diga Eebowai," the show-stopping "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream," the smooth "Baptize Me," and the comedy anthem "I Believe."

The The Book of Mormon is known for its raunchy, irreverent humor, which is par for the course for its creators. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are best known for writing the adult animated TV show South Park, and Robert Lopez co-created the adult puppet musical Avenue Q. Lopez is also notable for being the youngest person in history to achieve EGOT status and the only person to win all four requisite awards — an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony — more than once. In fact, he is one Oscar away from a triple EGOT.

The Book of Mormon features choreography and co-direction (alongside Parker) by Casey Nicholaw, known for helming other musical comedies including Something Rotten, The Producers, and The Prom.
