In Once Upon a Mattress, a sinister queen has plans, or lack thereof, for her son's marriage: keep him single as no one else is worthy. Enter Princess Winnifred, Fred for short, and from the swamp, no less. The queen ruthlessly rules over the faraway land and declares that none can marry until her son weds. Challenge accepted: the queen puts Princess Winnifred through multiple tests, and the not-so-refined Fred champions each with her verve, wit, and enough volume to wake up the whole kingdom.
A raucous and hilarious comedy that’s also an update on a Hans Christian Andersen tale, Once Upon a Mattress features an indelible score from Mary Rogers and Marshall Barer with crowd-pleasing show tunes including "Sensitivity," "In a Little While," and "Shy." The musical first debuted on Broadway in 1959 and has enjoyed countless productions; now, after decades, it returns to Broadway with its own royal treatment: Broadway queen Sutton Foster as Princess Fred.
The songs in this musical are Broadway standards, featuring many solos, duets, and chorus numbers. Perhaps the most famous song is for Princess Winnifred’s entrance: “Shy,” which is also the title of composer Mary Rodgers’ memoir.
The musical’s book is by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer and features an updated script by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Lear deBessonet directs this revival after receiving a Tony Award nomination for directing the recent production of Into the Woods. She is also a Drama Desk nominee for directing Good Person of Szechwan.
Once Upon a Mattress is a classic family show and is recommended for anyone ages 5 and up. Note audiences under four years old are not permitted in Broadway theatres.
The original production was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical, and this recent staging, a New York Times Critic’s Pick, “will restore your fealty to the throne” per Observer.
