First staged in 1925, *Hay Fever* is a play by Noël Coward. The story is a fantastic peek into the complexities of a family, each member consumed by their own vanity. This play shows what is supposedly a family of prestige and elegance for what they truly are: selfish and incapable of sitting with themselves without the applause of others. 

This new West End revival brings together two major screen and stage performers. Christine Baranski arrives at Wyndham’s Theatre after an acclaimed career that spans Broadway, film, and television, including two impressive Tony Award wins. Richard E. Grant returns to the West End stage after more than two decades apart, taking on the brilliant role of David Bliss. 

This production, expertly staged by Emily Burns, is playing a strictly limited season. With Coward’s quick-witted dialogue and a star-led cast, *Hay Fever* promises to bring both elegance and arrogance back to the West End stage.

## What to watch for 

- *Hay Fever* was nominated for two Olivier Awards in 1993 for Best Costume Design and Best Comedy Performance. 
- This play was the first of Coward’s to be televised. It was an NBC production in 1939. 
- *Hay Fever* first opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in June 1925, directed by Coward himself. 
- The first London revival of *Hay Fever* took place in 1933 at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

*Hay Fever* is a play by Noël Coward that follows the Bliss family, a household filled with self-absorbed individuals whose idea of hosting is not as hospitable as one might think. Judith Bliss is a recently retired stage actress and is already missing all of the attention. At the family’s country home, her reclusive husband, who is also a novelist, David, and their grown children, Sorel and Simon, are too absorbed in their own lives to give her the attention she believes she deserves. 

So, Judith invites a fan to stay for the weekend. Unfortunately for her, every member of the family had the same idea, inviting a guest of their own to the house, and none of them told anyone else of their plans. As the visitors arrive one after the other, the house descends into chaos.

Richard E. Grant will star opposite Christine Baranski in *Hay Fever* at Wyndham's Theatre this September. 

The show marks Grant's return to the West End for the first time in 20 years, when he starred in the 2005 revival of Simon Gray’s comedy *Otherwise Engaged* at the Criterion Theatre.

He is best known for his screen roles including the films *Nuremberg, Saltburn, Everybody's Talking About Jamie, About Time,* and *Can You Ever Forgive Me?*, for which he received an Oscar nomination. He has also starred in a number of TV shows including the BBC's *The Other Bennet Sister.*

Tony Award winner Christine Baranski is making her West End debut in *Hay Fever* at Wyndham’s Theatre this September. 

Baranski is known for her screen roles in films such as *Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Chicago*, and *Cruel Intentions*, as well as TV shows like *The Good Wife* and *The Gilded Age*. On stage, she has won Tony Awards for her role as Charlotte in Tom Stoppard's *The Real Thing* (1984) and as Chris Gorman in Neil Simon's *Rumors* (1989). Her other Broadway credits include *Hurlyburly* (1984), *The House of Blue Leaves* (1986), and *Boeing Boeing* (2008).

When this landmark musical debuted on Broadway in 2010, it won 3 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama – one of only ten musicals in history to receive this prestigious honour. A ground-breaking and intimate portrait of a modern family, Next to Normal *“tears at the heart in a way few musicals manage”* (Attitude). 

Named after its founder and famed actor-manager Charles Wyndham, the **Wyndham's Theatre** is a classic London West End theatre that stands on Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster. Opened in 1899, the theatre was designed by W G R Sprague, an architect who was also responsible for many other West End theatres. It has a strong reputation for high-quality drama, which is part of its charm and attractiveness. The exterior contains a beautiful portico in the classical style, while the interior is adorned with luxurious ornate plasterwork. Over its history, Wyndham's Theatre has hosted a wide variety of productions, including 'God of Carnage', 'Art', and 'Donkeys' Years'.

**Getting to the Wyndham's Theatre:**

Wyndham's Theatre is easily accessible by multiple modes of transport. The closest Underground station, Leicester Square, is just a two-minute walk away, offering connections via the Northern and Piccadilly lines. Several bus stop directly outside the theatre, including routes 24, 29 and 176. Limited on-street paid parking is available. National car park at St Martin’s Lane Hotel offers a discount to theatre patrons, but the venue encourages sustainable transport options where possible.

The Wyndham’s Theatre opened on 16 Nov. 1899. The theatre was commissioned by Charles Wyndham who also managed the [Criterion Theatre.](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/criterion-theatre) 

The Wyndham’s welcomed its first long-running production – Sandy Wilson’s musical *The Boyfriend* which opened on 14 Jan. 1959 and ran for over 2,000 performances. Another successful musical came to the theatre in 1972, the Roundhouse’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s *Godspell*, which ran for three years. The theatre has seen many notable actors grace the stage, including Alec Guinness, [Vanessa Redgrave](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/vanessa-redgrave), Diana Rigg and Madonna.

In May 2005, the Wyndham’s Theatre was bought by Cameron Mackintosh through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. The theatre was renovated in 2008 and plays regularly run for limited engagements at the Wyndham's Theatre.

## Wyndham's Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

In the Stalls, the front four rows of seating are not raked, but other than that the seats in the Stalls offer excellent views of the stage.

Only the seats in Row G of the Royal Circle are affected by the overhang of the Grand Circle. Seats are well raked, offering great views of the stage.

The Grand Circle is set very high in this theatre.

The Balcony is set behind and above the Grand Circle, so does feel far from the stage, but the view is unobstructed.
