One of the most beloved American novels of all time, *The Great Gatsby* is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s magnum opus. In the decades since its 1925 publication, the novel became a fixture of high school literature classes and inspired countless critically acclaimed adaptations, including a 2013 Baz Luhrmann film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Nick Carraway are the main characters in this timeless tale of desire, ambition, and class in the 1920s, when Gatsby's quest to rekindle his old flame with Daisy upends the lives of everyone around him.

Director Marc Bruni, known for the Tony Award-winning *Beautiful: The Carole King Musical*, stages *The Great Gatsby* musical. Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen's original score infuses the jazzy music style of the '20s with a contemporary flair, and Kait Kerrigan's adapted book brings the Roaring Twenties to the 2020s.

## What to watch for

- Choreographer Dominique Kelley is a two-time Henry Award and two-time Broadway World Award winner who's worked with pop stars like Beyoncé, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, and P!nk.
- *The Great Gatsby* features many famous staples of the 1920s, like flappers (liberated women who wore shorter hair and hemlines), Art Deco architecture (defined by its geometric shapes and sleek designs), and jazz music (as the Jazz Age came into full swing).
- This *Great Gatsby* musical is one of two that premiered at the same time: Another one titled *Gatsby: An American Myth* premiered in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2024. It features a book by Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok, music by Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine) and Thomas Bartlett, and direction by [*Hadestown*](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/14748-hadestown) Tony winner Rachel Chavkin.

After emerging victorious in World War I, the United States sought to put the misery and deaths of the Great War behind them, ushering in a new era of flappers, soirees, and plenty of glitz and glam. F. Scott Fitzgerald captured this beautifully in his novel while also acknowledging the hollowness beneath a lifestyle of party after party. The result is one of America’s most celebrated books. Now, experience it on stage, where audiences are transported to a mysterious millionaire’s mansion on Long Island in sight of the city’s twinkling lights.

## What to watch for

- The 1920s were known for their bold fashion, which is on display in this show that took home the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
- The timeless tale has been adapted before: In 2013, Baz Luhrman directed a film version starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
- F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his novel in the hopes it would make him a famous playwright, but his plays never found the success of his book.
- The story takes place in New York in the Jazz Age, but Fitzgerald originally toyed with setting it in the Midwest decades prior.

The hit 1990 film, starring iconic duo Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, comes to life onstage in this new adaptation with music by Canadian singer/songwriter Bryan Adams (who had 1980s hits like “Summer of ’69” and “Run to You”) and his songwriting partner, Jim Vallance.

The story centers on Vivian Ward, a prostitute hired by rich entrepreneur Edward Lewis to accompany him for a week in Los Angeles. Edward showers Vivian with large sums of cash for an elegant shopping spree, while her old friends from the block start to get jealous. As Vivian makes the transformation from call girl to classy lady, she finds herself falling for Edward, who also begins to see Vivian beyond her profession. Directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, the grown-up Cinderella story celebrates the outsider in all of us and shows that looks and money aren’t the keys to love.
## What to watch for
Andy Karl, who stars as Edward, is married to actress Orfeh, who plays Vivian’s best friend, Kit.

Jerry Mitchell both directs and choreographs “Pretty Woman,” his third time taking on both duties on Broadway following “Legally Blonde” and “Kinky Boots.”

“Pretty Woman” has been adapted for the stage by the same creative team behind the original 1990 film: director Garry Marshall and writer J.F. Lawton. Although Marshall died while the musical was still in development, producer Paula Wagner said, “I know he would have wanted us to continue on and therefore we will bring this story to Broadway.”

Pretty Woman: The Musical on Broadway [10364] - TodayTix

Welcome to Rodeo Drive! The cast of Pretty Woman: The Musical features rising star of stage & screen Samantha Barks and three-time Tony Award nominee & Olivier Award winner Andy Karl, who take on the iconic roles of Vivian and Edward, made famous in the hit 1990 movie by Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, of course. The musical adaptation not only features a book by the late great Garry Marshall (who directed the movie) and J.F. Lawton (who wrote the screenplay), but it also boasts original music by Grammy Award-winning superstar Bryan Adams, along with his longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance.90's nostalgia is running wild at the Nederlander Theatre and if you're a die-hard fan of this musical's celebrated source material, you'll be pleased to hear that this stage adaptation has stayed clear of messing with the sacred. Even many of the classic Julia Roberts outfits are given identical (or at least strikingly similar) replicas, worn with gusto by Samantha Barks, and those iconic (cinematic) moments are reborn to the delight of the audience at each performance. From the playful snapping shut of the jewelry box to the delivery of the "Big mistake! Big! Huge!" line, there is an unmistakable electricity in the auditorium, whenever a shared moment of recognition brings the entire audience together as one. But this is live theatre, after all, and not cinema, and in director Jerry Mitchell's slick production, the theatricality comes in the form of our special guide through this Los Angeles love story. "Welcome to Hollywood" sings our Happy Man from the getgo and we are reassured we're in safe hands. Not only does he pop up sporadically throughout the performance but also (with a knowing wink to the audience) slips into the roles of the hotel manager Mr. Thompson (as well as a jazz pianist and opera conductor to boot). As a theatrical device, he is the conscience of the piece and our welcomed companion.Andy Karl does a sublime job of bringing an empathetic quality to the potentially unlikeable character of Edward and, as the musical progresses, we discover that it is Edward's journey of self-discovery that holds the most weight. This is not merely a rags-to-riches tale of a Hollywood Boulevard sex worker, but of two human beings that rescue each other in more ways than one. Edward's business-centric mind, devoid of emotional connection and suffocating with isolation, undergoes the transformation, whereas Vivian's arc is ultimately more circumstancial.Samantha Barks is perfect casting as our Pretty Woman, beautifully balancing toughness with vulnerability, and her vocals are crystal clear and soaring in anthemic numbers such as "I Can't Go Back". In addition, Orfeh also rousingly shows off her belting skills as Vivian's best friend, Kit De Luca, and visibly relishes her scene-stealing performance. And then there's the infectious score by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance that boasts more than its fair share of infectious soft-rock melodies. The lyrics are simplistic without pretence, but it is the music that grasps you tightly, lets go, and strengthen its grip with the reprises. Vivian's theme "Anywhere but Here" and Edward's theme "Freedom" are prime examples.Prior to Broadway, Pretty Woman: The Musical staged its world premiere at Chicago's Oriental Theatre for a limited 5-week engagement in the spring of 2018. Now, Broadway audiences are being asked the question: "What's Your Dream?" Maybe yours could come true with this theatrical trip to Hollywood... Once upon a Time in the 1980s... (Photos by Matthew Murphy)
