*Punch*, a New York premiere, is based on the true-life book *Right from Wrong* by Jacob Dunne. Graham was inspired by the moving, brutally honest story and adapted it for the stage. Now, the jolting play comes to the States in a production that is association with Nottingham Playhouse.

Nottingham is its own character in the play, as it is the turf where protagonist Jacob wanders as he does drugs, sleeps with various women, and gets into violent bar fights. After landing in jail for one crime that turned deadly, he is offered a unique chance to meet with the parents of the victim he killed. Can the consequences of his actions also be the building blocks for a new life?

Playwright James Graham is not interested in easy answers, and in having audiences spend time with a character they usually don't see on stage, Graham hopes to illuminate the gray areas within all of us that drive self-questioning and change.

## What to watch for

- In a rare occurrence in theatre, *Punch* is making its West End and Broadway premieres at the same time.
- Based on Jacob Dunne's memoir, Graham’s play recounts how trainee paramedic James Hodgkinson was killed on a night out in Nottingham in 2011 through a single punch to the head, delivered by the then 19-year-old Jacob.
- London Theatre wrote, "With Graham at the wheel, it is no surprise that *Punch* is full of messages about social politics, from the redevelopment of council estates to the redistribution of local government funds."
- Audiences can expect a specific look at a working-class world in which economics, culture, and politics collide that dictate one family's grief and one man's redemption.
- Director Adam Penford is also the artistic director of Nottingham Playhouse, who is also producing this New York show.

Punch on Broadway - NYC - Todaytix

*Punch* follows Jacob after a whirlwind of drugs, sex, and violence leads him to prison — but also to the parents of the boy he killed, ultimately changing the course of his life.

See this muscular, propulsive show about one lethal blow and the lives that were changed after it. *Punch* plays on Broadway next season at the Pulitzer Prize-winning theatre Manhattan Theatre Club, which is known for such hits as *Doubt* and *Proof*. Coming to the company's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, Olivier Award winner James Graham's strong but moving new play is based on the real-life story of a man who punched and killed a young man on a night out in Nottingham.

Experience *Punch* on Broadway to see this singular story based on the memoir Right From Wrong by Jacob Dunne. In that memoir, Dunne recounts how he killed a trainee paramedic, James Hodgkinson, as a teenager on a night out in Nottingham in 2011 through a single punch to the head. Epic, gripping, and deeply affecting, the play takes an unflinching look at violence and the grief that follows.

In *Punch*, Jacob is on a tear through Nottingham, drinking, doing drugs, and sleeping with women he picks up. Prone to violence, his bad habits get the best of him on one tragic night out where he punches a young man. He lands in jail, but can a meeting with the dead man's parents redirect his life?

An epic story intimately told, *Punch* won great acclaim in England. "Five stars for James Graham’s most moving work yet," The Times of London wrote. "If it sometimes feels as if James Graham is the one playwright regularly allowed to address big themes on big stages, *Punch* is a reminder of why he is so special."

After writing about Gareth Southgate’s transformation of the national football team in *Dear England*, Graham now turns his attention to one crime that shook a community.

Where do powerful world leaders come from? The New York transfer of Morgan's celebrated play *Patriots* exposes the twists and turns of a leader’s rise to fame and how Putin’s power threatened the very man who handpicked him as a leader. By turning an eye to the 1991 Soviet Union, Morgan brings thrilling theatrical life to one of today’s most notorious leaders.

The play also reveals the life of a less famous but highly influential Russian figure: billionaire Boris Berezovsky, who passed away in 2013. Berezovsky made his fortune in Russia in the 1990s, when the country implemented privatization of state property. He profited from gaining control the country's main TV channel among other properties.

In 1997, Forbes estimated Berezovsky's wealth at $3 billion. Perhaps most importantly, he helped fund Unity, the political party that formed Vladimir Putin's first parliamentary base — until he turned his back on Putin and became his main critic for the rest of his life.

## What to watch for

- The hit show premiered at London's Almeida Theatre before going to London's West End and to Broadway. *Patriots* in New York is the same as that production. One of the U.K.’s most famous theatres, the Almeida has premiered recent hits including *Tammy Faye* (headed for Broadway soon) and *A Streetcar Named Desire* with Paul Mescal.
- Another major character in *Patriots* is fellow Russian politician Roman Abramovich, played by Luke Thallon in London and New York. He allegedly has a good relationship with Putin, but he's publicly denied this.
- Berezovsky spent time in exile. He publicly stated his mission to bring down Putin "by force" or by bloodless revolution. After making that threat, Berezovsky survived several alleged assassination attempts and received political refugee status in the U.K.
- Morgan has written other stage plays about politics, including *Frost/Nixon* about the American presidency and *The Audience* about Queen Elizabeth II and her meetings with prime ministers.

See the London smash hit coming to Broadway for 12 weeks only. Emmy and Tony Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg and Olivier Award winner Will Keen go head-to-head in Peter Morgan's (*The Crown*) drama about Putin’s meteoric rise to power.

Set in 1991, at the fall of the Soviet Union, the *Patriots* play tracks Russia as the new country rises. Following political upheaval, there are winners and losers, and today’s patriot can fast become tomorrow’s traitor. *Patriots* follows billionaire businessman Boris Berezovsky from President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle to his role as public enemy number one, as Putin’s rise to dictatorial power soon made Berezovsky one of his fiercest critics.

Hopping across the pond from the Almeida Theatre, *Patriots* on Broadway was first one of London's buzziest shows from 2023, earning critical acclaim and an Olivier Award nominee for Best New Play. The Evening Standard calls the play a “taut political drama about the fight for Russia’s soul.”

Emmy and Tony Award nominee Stuhlbarg (*Call Me By Your Name, The Pillowman, Dopesick*) stars as Berezovsky, the kingmaker behind Vladimir Putin’s rise, and Will Keen reprises his Olivier Award-winning turn as Putin. Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold (*Ink, Spring Awakening*) stages *Patriots* in New York,
