*Ragtime* is a singularly American story featuring three families: Black pianist Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and his beloved Sarah, Jewish immigrant Tateh and his young daughter, and a wealthy white family led by a matriarch Mother who are all grasping for the same dream, if only they can hold onto it.

Lincoln Center Theater's new Artistic Director Lear deBessonet, a Tony-nominated director (*Once Upon a Mattress, Into the Woods*), stages this production, which opens her inaugural season. Envisioned for the grand Vivian Beaumont Theater, “*Ragtime* feels like the perfect way to begin my tenure as Artistic Director of this very sacred place,” said deBessonet in a statement. “As we celebrate the legacy of LCT and the level of art that has been achieved over the last four decades, it is important for us to continue to be inspired by the sublime possibilities of theater through stories that demand to be told. Such a story is *Ragtime*.”

## What to watch for

- *Ragtime* features a lush score including beloved songs "Your Daddy's Son," "Journey On" and "Til We Reach That Day."

- *Ragtime* is created by Broadway legends with music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.
- Ben Levi Ross and Tony Award winner Shaina Taub have also joined the large ensemble cast in supporting roles.

How far will you go to protect and honor your faith? This new play sees a family on the brink of tearing itself apart as the High Holidays quickly approach. Three rabbis offer spiritual guidance, even as one’s trans identity shows rifts in their varied views. Full of secrets that are unearthed and introspective looks at faith, Becoming Eve is an enriching theatrical event and a singular dissection of contemporary Judaism.

This play is deeply personal — it is based on Abby Chava Stein’s extraordinary memoir, Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman. Stein is the first woman, and the first openly transgender woman, to have been ordained by an Orthodox Jewish institution. In 2018, she co-founded Sacred Space, a multi-faith project "which celebrates women and non-binary people of all faith traditions.” Her progressive views have made her a pioneering voice; now, her story comes to the stage for the first time.

## What to watch for
- Tyne Rafaeli, a Drama Desk Award nominee and new play advocate, directs this new play. She is known for directing *I Was Most Alive with You* and *Selling Kabul*, a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
- This play also features a unique puppetry design from Amanda Villalobos.
- New York Theatre Workshop is known for producing bold new plays and musicals; some noteworthy ones include *Rent* and *[Hadestown](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/14748-hadestown)*.
- Playwright Emil Weinstein is also a director, as seen with episodes of the TV shows *The L Word: Generation Q* and *A League of Their Own*.

Becoming Eve - NYC - Todaytix

Based on Abby Chava Stein’s memoir, *Becoming Eve* is a thrilling new drama about three rabbis attempting to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity to help reunite a family — all in the week before the High Holidays.

Get *Becoming Eve* tickets on New York Theatre Guide and see Tommy Dorfman (*Romeo + Juliet, 13 Reasons Why*) star as Chava, a rabbi contending with her upbringing, faith, and trans identity. *Becoming Eve* plays for a limited run only at Abrons Arts Center in a production from New York Theatre Workshop, the downtown powerhouse that started award-winning shows like *Rent* and *[Hadestown](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)*.

See *Becoming Eve* off Broadway this spring and experience a heartfelt, nuanced, and contemporary look at Judaism and family. Based on the critically acclaimed memoir by Abby Chava Stein, *Becoming Eve* is a remarkable playwriting debut from Emil Weinstein, who directed episodes of the TV shows *The L Word: Generation Q* and *A League of Their Own*. Directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Tyne Rafaeli (*Selling Kabul*), the production also features stunning puppetry from Amanda Villalobos.

A week before the High Holidays, three rabbis gather with a family in a room that becomes a crucible for the widening gap between orthodoxy and modernity. To save the straining family, the rabbis attempt to open up conversations that unearth ideological differences and rare perspectives — including one from Chava, a trans rabbi.

The child of a dynastic Hasidic rabbinical family and born to become a leader of the next generation, Chava was quickly isolated due to her identity, which fiercely clashed with the strictly gendered world in which she was raised. Becoming Eve jumps through time, memory, and deep conversations as truths and secrets surface that ensure no one will read the old stories the same way again.

Abby Chava Stein was the first openly transgender woman raised in a Hasidic community, and she is a direct descendant of Hasidic Judaism's founder, the Baal Shem Tov. Her memoir shook the foundation of her family’s faith, and now her story will be told on stage. Tickets to *Becoming Eve* in New York will be available here soon.
