In a poll conducted by the British Royal National Theatre in 1998/99, *Waiting for Godot* was voted as the "most significant English-language play of the 20th century.” The play is absurd, hilarious, and utterly itself: existential as it looks at what keeps us from moving forward and towards what we want, its themes have been found in many works, and its influential structure was most recently seen on Broadway in *Pass Over*, the new play that reopened Broadway after COVID, its own time of anxiety and waiting.

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will now take on the play’s classic roles. The two are longtime buds, which will work nicely for their onstage character. Reeves and Winter starred in the sci-fi comedy *Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure* and have gone on to create sequels and spin-offs from that work while also pursuing their own careers. Now, they come to New York to star for the first time together on Broadway after decades of joint filmmaking.

## What to watch for

- Alex Winter has appeared on Broadway before as a teenager, in *The King and I, Peter Pan*, and *Close of Play*.
- While Keanu Reeves is known for his film career, he has been in theatrical productions before, including playing Hamlet, but this performance marks his Broadway debut.
- Jamie Lloyd often employs videography, stark lighting, and minimal props in his shows, as seen in his Tony Award-winning revival of *Sunset Boulevard*.
- Samuel Beckett is famous for being one of Ireland’s most celebrated playwrights and is known for his blending of dark and light humor in his pieces that can lean, as with this one, more experimental.

Waiting for Godot on Broadway - NYC - Todaytix

Samuel Beckett’s tragicomedy is a wonderfully confounding masterpiece that follows two people as they wait — and wait — for someone named Godot to maybe (finally) arrive.

Get *Waiting for Godot* tickets on New York Theatre Guide and see longtime friends and acclaimed stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in the newest revival of Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece. The *Bill & Ted* co-stars share the stage for the first time, with Reeves making his Broadway debut and Winter returning for the first time in decades to lead a profound classic with a simple plot: Two friends, waiting for another to arrive, pass the time with small talk that reveals unexpected insights into what it means to be alive.

What are you waiting for? Experience *Waiting for Godot* on Broadway and see a captivating new production from two-time Tony Award nominee and multiple Olivier Award winner Jamie Lloyd. That famous British director is known for his stripped-down productions, which have riveted audiences with their stirring performances and seemingly bare but highly evocative designs.

Lloyd is a master of working with celebrities to reinvent beloved pieces of theatre: Jessica Chastain starred in his incendiary production of *A Doll’s House* and he brought Nicole Scherzinger to Broadway in *[Sunset Boulevard](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/38372-sunset-boulevard-broadway)*. Now, Keanu Reeves (*The Matrix*) and Alex Winter (*Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure*) will star opposite one another as Estragon and Vladimir, respectively, in this fresh take on Beckett’s classic.

In a joint statement, Reeves and Winter said, “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”

Lloyd said in a statement, “It is a real honor to be collaborating with the brilliant Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter on Samuel Beckett’s sublime masterpiece — one of the greatest plays of all time.”

In *Waiting for Godot*, Estragon and Vladimir await a man named Godot. Whether he arrives or not is perhaps not the point of the play, which has charmed audiences since its 1953 premiere. Bill Irwin, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart have all performed in versions of the play, which remains wildly open to interpretation. Now, it’s time for a new generation of audiences to greet this play and see film stars take on the iconic roles. Tickets to *Waiting for Godot* in New York are available now.

Hudson Theatre

Hudson Theatre - TodayTix

The Hudson Theatre first opened on October 19, 1903, with *Cousin Kate* starring Ethel Barrymore. Although the firm of J. B. McElfatrick & Son first drew up the architectural design of the theatre in 1902, the firm of Israels & Harder ultimately took over and completed the project. The venue was built for theatrical producer Henry B. Harris, who managed the theatre until his death as a passenger on the RMS Titanic in 1912.

During the 1930s and 1940s, the building was also used as for CBS Radio broadcasts when it wasn't being used for theatrical productions. NBC purchased the property in 1950, converting it into a permanent television studio. The venue housed *The Tonight Show* from 1954 to 1959.

Over the next few decades, under the ownership of developer Abraham Hirschfeld, the building was used for theatrical productions (1960 to 1968), as an adult movie house (from 1974), and as the Savoy rock club (from 1980). The Hudson Theatre was awarded New York landmark status in 1987.

Millennium & Copthorne Hotels purchased the Hudson in 1995 as a part of the surrounding luxury hotel known as the Millennium Broadway and used as a business conference center and auditorium. During this time, it was additionally used as a stand-up comedy venue for Comedy Central broadcasts.

In 2015, Ambassador Theatre Group purchased the venue as its second official Broadway venue, following the [Lyric Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/lyric-theatre-ny). After fully shutting down and undergoing a major renovation, the Hudson reopened in 2017 with a revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical *Sunday in the Park with George,* starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Since the theatre first opened in 1903 and reopened from scratch in 2017, the Hudson is simultaneously Broadway's oldest and newest theatre.

The ugly underside of America’s favorite pastime comes to the surface in *Take Me Out*, Richard Greenberg’s timely and powerful work about what happens when a professional athlete gets personal off the field. Take Me Out interrogates long-held American traditions, the nature of fandom, and how much an individual must sacrifice in the name of victory.

The *Take Me Out* play sees Darren Lemming come out as gay at the height of his Major League career. The fan response is mixed — but that’s nothing compared to the reaction from Lemming’s teammates in the locker room, whose unspoken prejudices come to light. Lemming had thought himself above the bigotry and impossible standards that face other athletes of color, but he must now face them.

The original *Take Me Out* production won three Tony Awards, including for Best Play in 2003, and was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize For Drama in the same year. Even though the *Take Me Out* play is inspired by an American sport, the show had its world premiere in London at the Donmar Warehouse in 2002, before moving off Broadway to The Public Theater later that year. The production then transferred to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in 2003.

*Take Me Out* has received widespread acclaim for its unflinching exploration of intolerance, self-acceptance and toxic masculinity — themes which resonate just as powerfully today. Greenberg “turns baseball into something like grand opera,” Ben Brantley wrote in The New York Times when the play premiered, declaring *Take Me Out* “an unconditional, all-American epiphany that, in these days of fretful ambivalence, is something to cherish.”

## What to Watch For

- History repeats itself! *Take Me Out* won Best Play at the Tonys in 2003, and Denis O'Hare won Best Featured Actor for playing the gay accountant Mason Marzac. In 2022, the show won Best Revival of a Play, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson won Best Featured Actor for his performance as Mason.
- Some of the events and characters in *Take Me Out* are reportedly based on real people. Darren is said to be based on Derek Jeter, and his team, the New York Empires, stands in for the Yankees. Darren's bigoted teammate Shane Mungitt is reportedly based on former relief pitcher John Rocker, and Mason Marzac, who becomes a huge baseball fan overnight from nothing, reflects Greenberg himself. He similarly got interested in the sport after the 1999 record-breaking Yankees season.
- Greenberg wrote *Take Me Out* to imagine what would happen if a Major League Baseball player came out during his career; when the play premiered in 2002, none ever had. As of the 2022 revival, that's still the case.
- *Grey’s Anatomy* is Jesse Williams’s most famous credit, but he’s also known for the films *The Butler* and *Band Aid*, and for producing the Oscar-winning short film *Two Distant Strangers*.
- More than 25 plays by Richard Greenberg have premiered on and off Broadway in New York City, including *The Perplexed*, *The American Plan*, and the Pulitzer finalist *Three Days of Rain*.
- The original 2003 production of the *Take Me Out* play was directed by Joe Mantello. Later that same year, Mantello staged a new Broadway musical named *Wicked*.

## What is the play *Take Me Out* about?

The *Take Me Out* play revolves around a mixed-race baseball star named Darren Lemming, who comes out as gay and is confronted off the field by deep-rooted homophobic and racist prejudices. Though he finds support in the form of Kippy Sunderstrom (his best friend on the team) and Mason Marzac (his new business manager), Darren finds himself questioning his love for baseball at the height of his career. Offering an explosive take on homophobia, racism, class, and masculinity in the world of sports, *Take Me Out* knocks it out of the park as both a crucial social commentary and a riveting piece of theatre.

*Take Me Out* was first staged at the Donmar Warehouse in London and subsequently at [The Public Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater) in New York as a co-production between the two companies. The *Take Me Out* Broadway premiere came in 2003, with Daniel Sunjata as Darren Lemming. After becoming a finalist for that year's Pulitzer Prize, *Take Me Out* won three Tony Awards: Best Play, Best Direction (for Joe Mantello), and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play (for Denis O’Hare as Mason Marzac). Later that year, Joe Mantello directed [*Wicked*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets), which is one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time.

*Take Me Out* has proven as relevant today as it was at the time of its original premiere. In spring 2022, Second Stage Theater mounted the first revival of *Take Me Out* with an all-star cast: *Grey's Anatomy* star Jesse Williams and *Suits* star Patrick J. Adams in their Broadway debuts, and *Modern Family* star [Jesse Tyler Ferguson](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jesse-tyler-ferguson) in his first return to Broadway in six years. That production was a grand-slam hit, earning lots of rave reviews and four Tony Award nominations. Following in the original production's footsteps, *Take Me Out* won Best Revival of a Play, and Ferguson won Best Featured Actor for his own performance as Mason.

## How long is the *Take Me Out* play?

*Take Me Out* runs 2 hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission.

Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams and Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson go for a second inning in the award-winning play *Take Me Out* on Broadway. When a baseball star comes out of the closet, the team's reception reveals unspoken prejudices about sexuality, masculinity, money, power, race, and class. Find out more about tickets to this grand-slam hit.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson was born on October 22, 1975 in Missoula, Montana and later raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ferguson has been acting since he was 8 years old, first as a member of Albuquerque Children's Theater and later in high school, and studied performance at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.

Since then, he has built a prolific, 25-plus-year theatre career in New York and beyond. He made his Off-Broadway debut in *On the Town* at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, and he made his Broadway debut with that production, too, when it transferred to the Gershwin Theatre. His other best-known Broadway roles include Leaf Coneybear in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* — which earned him a Drama League Award nomination, and earned his entire ensemble a Drama Desk Award win — and *Fully Committed*, for which he won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. He's also appeared in multiple Shakespeare in the Park productions, *The Producers* and Monty Python's *Spamalot* at the Hollywood Bowl, and *Log Cabin* off Broadway.

Most people know Ferguson, however, for his TV work — more specifically, for his role as Mitchell Pritchett on the ABC sitcom *Modern Family*. He was in the show for all 11 seasons, from 2009 to 2020, and received four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series alongside his cast. He himself was also nominated five times for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He's also appeared on shows like *Ugly Betty, RuPaul's Drag Race*, and *The Good Fight*.

In 2022, Ferguson returned to Broadway for the first time since doing *Fully Committed* in 2016. He played Mason Marzac in the first revival of Richard Greenberg's *Take Me Out*, a role that won Denis O'Hare the Best Featured Actor Tony Award for the premiere Broadway production in 2002. Ferguson himself won a Tony for the role in 2022, and he reprised it in *Take Me Out*'s fall 2022 encore engagement.

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and built by the Shuberts in 1917, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre originally opened as the Plymouth Theatre in 1918. The theatre was leased to producer Arthur Hopkins, whose first production at the venue was the comedy *A Successful Calamity*, starring William Gillette and Estelle Winwood.

The Shuberts regained control of the theatre in 1948 after Hopkins passed away. The building became a designated New York landmark in 1987 and received its current name in 2005 to honor the late chairman of the Shubert Organization.

The theatre's architectural style is similar that of the Broadhurst Theatre on 44th Street, which directly abuts the Schoenfeld. Krapp designed both theatres, and they were built at the same time.
