The Public Theater

Joseph Papp founded The Public Theater in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop. The organization moved into its current home on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan in 1967.

The Public Theater building was under risk of demolition until the Public persuaded the city council to sell them the building for use as a theatre. As a result, the building was granted New York City landmark status in 1965, and architect Giorgio Cavaglieri converted it into a theatre in 1967.

The company’s inaugural production in its new home was the world premiere of *Hair*, which also marked its first non-Shakespeare offering. The building is comprised of five performance spaces: the Anspacher Theater (which has a 275-seat capacity), LuEsther Hall (160 seats), Martinson Theater (199 seats), Newman Theater (299 seats), and Shiva Theater (99 seats).

The Public complex also include office spaces; the restaurant and bar The Library; and Joe’s Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for smaller musical revues and soloists. The company also operates the [Delacorte Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/delacorte-theater) in Central Park, which has been home to free Shakespeare in the Park productions during the summer since 1954.

Born in 1880, Elmer McCurdy was an American outlaw killed in a shootout with police after robbing a train in Oklahoma in 1911. Now infamously known as "The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up," his mummified body was first put on display at an Oklahoma funeral home and then became a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit from the 1920s through the 1960s. After changing ownership several times, this legend’s remains eventually wound up at The Pike amusement zone in Long Beach, California, where they were discovered by crewmembers for a television series.

Sounds wild? It is, and there’s so much more to the not-so-tall tale. Director David Cromer, book writer Itamar Moses, and songwriters David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna (the only non-*Band’s Visit* creator of the group) were first commissioned to turn it into *Dead Outlaw* by Audible Theater, which mounted the world premiere at the Minetta Lane Theatre in 2024.

## What to watch for

- After training in the Army, McCurdy incorporated his knowledge of nitroglycerin, used for demolition purposes, into his train and bank robberies. However, he often failed to determine the proper amount to use and often bungled his thefts.
- The actor playing McCurdy must stay stock-still on stage to play his corpse for the whole second half of the show!
- McCurdy got a lot of posthumous nicknames, like "The Outlaw Who Would Never Be Captured Alive," "The Mystery Man of Many Aliases," "The Oklahoma Outlaw," and "The Embalmed Bandit."
- *Dead Outlaw* is the first Broadway show that originated with Audible Theater.

## Important information

- This production uses theatrical haze and smoke, as well as loud sound effects including gun shots.
- Children under 4 years old will not be admitted.
- No weapons permitted on the premises. No outside food or beverages, electric scooters, e-bikes, or battery-powered transportation devices, except when medically necessary.
- All items are subject to inspection. Anything brought into the theatre must fit on your lap or completely under your seat without blocking any aisles. Avoid bringing packages, luggage, and backpacks. Some items must be checked.
- The use of cameras, cell phones, and other recording devices during the show is strictly prohibited by law, except when used for accessibility services.

Telling the astounding but true story of a Western train robber who only became famous as a corpse, *Dead Outlaw* is a seven-time Tony Award-nominated folk rock musical that reunites the team from *The Band’s Visit*.

Take a wild Western ride at the seven-time Tony Award-nominated *Dead Outlaw* on Broadway, an award-winning musical featuring a hit-making creative team and a true story you almost won't believe. Get *Dead Outlaw* tickets and watch the tale of an infamous corpse come to life.

*Dead Outlaw* uses a rousing folk-rock score to trace the colorful life of of an infamous American criminal named Elmer McCurdy. Don’t know who he is? You’ll be shocked by the details: A bank and train robber, McCurdy was a turn-of-the-century outlaw whose body was mummified after his untimely death in 1911, put on display at an Oklahoma funeral home, and turned into a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit for the next six decades. It's a legend that's dying to be told.

Still, it might seem like an unusual musical concept, but *Dead Outlaw* won four Best Musical prizes upon its 2024 world premiere off Broadway with Audible Theater. Behind the show is the creative team of the 10-time Tony Award-winning musical *The Band's Visit*: Director David Cromer, book writer Itamar Moses, and co-composer/lyricist David Yazbek, newly working together with Erik Della Penna.

Buckle up for a thrilling journey through a century of little-known American history. *Dead Outlaw* tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide.

Australian-born media mogul Rupert Murdoch is front and center in the Broadway bow of “INK” from British playwright James Graham. Now 87, Murdoch is a leading figure in world media, controlling cable channel Fox News, The Times of London ,and The Wall Street Journal. But there was a time when he was just starting out.

Set in 1969, the play begins when a young Murdoch takes over — and transforms — struggling British newspaper The Sun. With the help of ruthless editor Larry Lamb, Murdoch enlists a team of cutthroat reporters to reinvent The Sun into a tabloid giant with the goal to outsell their competition, The Mirror, in a year. Journalists go to any lengths to get on top in “INK.” Directed by Rupert Goold, the new play harkens back to a time when headlines were etched in INK to chronicle Murdoch’s rise to the top.

Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

INK on Broadway [15204] - TodayTix

We can always give thanks to London for exporting world class dramas and comedies to our shores and there are many reasons to be grateful for James Graham's Ink - a 2018 Olivier Award nominee for "Best New Play".Set in 1969, the play follows media mogul Rupert Murdoch on his uncompromising mission to dominate the British printed press with a newspaper that would appeal to the UK's Everyman by the masses. After the purchase of The Sun and the hiring of Larry Lamb as his unlikely editor, we discover the lengths Murdoch, Lamb and his team of reporters will go to (and the depths they will stoop to) to beat the competition.Ink began its life Off-West End at the immensely influential Almeida Theatre under the helm of its Artistic Director (and Tony Award nominee) Rupert Goold. Bertie Carvel, a Tony Award nominee in his own right for his deliciously menacing portrayal of headmistress Miss Trunchbull in Matilda the Musical, originated the role of Rupert Murdoch at the Almeida in the summer of 2017 and, after rave reviews, reprised the role during its West End transfer at the Duke of York's Theatre from September 2017 to January 2018. He also went on to win his second Olivier Award (his first being for Matilda) at the 2018 ceremony.Luckily for New York audiences, Bertie Carvel has agreed to return to Broadway to reprise that Olivier Award-winning performance and he is joined in the cast by fellow Brit Jonny Lee Miller, himself an Olivier Award winner for his breath-taking portrayal of both Victor Frankenstein and his creature (alternating the roles at each performance with Benedict Cumberbatch) in the National Theatre's 2011 production of Frankenstein. To American audiences, he's perhaps best known for his TV role as Sherlock Holmes (opposite Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson) on CBS' "Elementary", as well as his cult role as Sickboy in Danny Boyle's two "Trainspotting" films.Playwright James Graham previously made his Broadway debut, penning the book for the 2015 Broadway premiere of Finding Neverland, but makes his straight play debut with Ink. He made his Off-Broadway debut in the summer of 2016 with Privacy, starring Daniel Radcliffe, at the Public Theater and in London, he is widely known for his Olivier Award-winning comedy Labour of Love and his Olivier-nominated political masterpiece This House.Manhattan Theatre Club presents the American premiere of Ink as part of its 2018-2019 Broadway season as a co-production with the Almeida Theatre and Sonia Friedman Productions.Stop the press and book yourself a ticket, before the ink runs dry!(Photos by Joan Marcus)
