Born in 1880, Elmer McCurdy was an American outlaw killed in a shoot-out with police after robbing a train in 1911. Now infamously known as The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up, his mummified body was first displayed at an Oklahoma funeral home, and it then became a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit from the 1920-60s.
After changing ownership several times, McCurdy’s remains eventually wound up at The Pike amusement zone in Long Beach, California, where they were discovered by TV crew members. Sounds bizarre? It is, and there’s so much more to the not-so-tall tale, all set to music by Grammy Award-winning composer Yazbek.
The Band's Visit, Yazbek's first collaboration with Moses and Cromer, won 10 Tony Awards in 2018, including Best Musical. Now, Dead Outlaw in New York premieres with Audible Theater, the theatrical arm of the podcast/audiobook giant.
All aboard for a thrilling new musical event about adventure, crime, and redemption. Telling the astounding but true story of a Western train robber, Dead Outlaw reunites the Tony-winning team from The Band’s Visit, offering audiences a special theatrical event.
Dead Outlaw runs for 1h 40m (no intermission).
