Thornton Wilder’s play, first staged in 1938, is an American classic and has enjoyed countless productions and many New York revivals. Nostalgic, heartwarming, and universal in its exploration of love and grief, Our Town finds fresh resonance with each new production, and Kenny Leon, a Broadway visionary, will surely bring his own indelible style to this version, which features the most multicultural cast to perform in the show on Broadway.

Set in the early 1900s, Our Town on Broadway is a metatheatrical piece, meaning it takes place in the theater where it is set and usually relies on minimal props or scenery to invite the audience to fill in the gaps and imagine the fictional town of Grover’s Corner. The Stage Manager, here played by Jim Parsons, leads the audience through scenes and describes the world around them. Poetic, moving, and tender, Our Town endures as a one-of-a-kind show about the power of community.

What to watch for

• Jim Parsons has had a firecracker Broadway career, especially of late: he comes to Our Town after finishing his Tony-nominated run in Mother Play and has also been seen in The Boys in the Band, The Normal Heart, and An Act of God on Broadway.
• Kenny Leon often takes classic works and gives them a modern lift. His recent productions of Purlie Victorious, A Raisin in the Son, Fences, and A Soldier’s Play all earned him Tony Award nominations, and he won for A Raisin in the Sun.
• Our Town is indicative of a time when straight plays on Broadway employed larger casts; today, many are smaller. Some are solo shows or two-handers, but this production employs a large ensemble of 26 performers.
• Our Town not won a Pulitzer and popular acclaim, it is also beloved by playwrights — a true testament to its craft. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? playwright Esward Albee has dubbed the work “the greatest American play ever written.”
