Get ready to be transported back to the Roaring 20s with this new musical inspired by the classic 1959 Marilyn Monroe film. New York Theatre Guide raved about the original Broadway production, saying the “Broadway adaptation of the hit film turns up the comedy and the fun.”

The film Some Like It Hot broke boundaries at the time of release with its hilarious escapades of two musicians in disguise. Today, comedian Amber Ruffin and Tony-winning playwright Matthew López bring a contemporary twist to the classic story, delivering a message of authenticity and self-discovery. While honouring the film's iconic moments, this adaptation offers a fresh take for modern audiences.

Director Casey Nicholaw (Book of Mormon, Aladdin) will also choreograph the show, with a big-band jazz score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash).

More information about Some Like It Hot

Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe as Sugar, was a sensation from the beginning. The film's daring portrayal of cross-dressing challenged the restrictive Hays Code of the era, sparking conversation and eventually contributing to the code's abolishment. Garnering six Oscar nominations and one win, Some Like It Hot was not only a comedy classic but also one of the inaugural 25 films enshrined in the United States National Film Registry.

Unlike many shows that have a pre-Broadway run across the United States, the Some Like It Hot musical made its worldwide debut directly on Broadway. The production starred two-time Tony winner Christian Borle and 2023 Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee.

What to watch for

  • Shaiman and Wittman, the musical's composers, drew inspiration from legendary jazz and big band swing musicians such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Duke Ellington to create original songs for the show.
  • Shaiman and Wittman also collaborated on another Marilyn Monroe-related project, the television series Smash, which revolved around a fictional Broadway musical inspired by Monroe. They repurposed “Let’s Be Bad,” a song they wrote for the TV show, to open Act 2 of Some Like It Hot.
  • The Some Like It Hot defied the Hays Code, a set of censorship rules for films, by portraying LGBT themes like drag, contributing to its downfall.
