About New York, New York on Broadway

Start spreading the news! The new John Kander and Fred Ebb musical New York, New York makes its world premiere (where else?) on Broadway in New York City, and you can be a part of it. Get New York, New York tickets on TodayTix and see the nine-time Tony-nominated spectacular.

Experience this Best Musical nominee that's as bright, energetic, and spectacular as the city itself. Under the direction of five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman, expect big fun and even bigger dance numbers, set to exuberant tunes by Chicago and Cabaret creators Kander and Ebb — including, of course, the iconic title track. Plus, New York, New York features new songs by Kander and Pulitzer, Tony, and Grammy winner Lin-Manuel Miranda that you'll only hear on Broadway.

It's 1946, and a group of young artists are chasing success and love in a booming Big Apple. They made it here, but can they make it big? Loosely based on Martin Scorsese's 1977 movie of the same name, the New York, New York musical will delight anyone who's ever had a dream.

Feel like the king of the hill and the top of the heap when you see New York, New York. Tickets to the New York, New York Broadway musical are on TodayTix now.

More information about New York, New York on Broadway

The New York, New York musical takes its title and setting from the Scorsese film, but it features an entirely new plot by David Thompson and Sharon Washington. Just after World War II ends, the city is rebuilding, and lots of artists are moving there to chase big dreams. But even survival in the city is tricky for these musicians, singers, dancers, and artists. All of Kander and Ebb's songs from the movie remain, including "The World Goes Round" and "New York, New York."

New York, New York director/choreographer Susan Stroman is known for musicals with plenty of large-scale, high-energy song and dance, and this show features just that — one tap number takes place atop a construction beam, as though the dancers are performing in the sky. Stroman is a five-time Tony Award winner for productions including The Producers, Contact, Show Boat, and Crazy For You.

What to Watch For

  • The New York, New York film centered on the relationship between a saxophonist (Robert De Niro) and singer (Liza Minnelli). Neither of these exact characters is in New York, New York on Broadway, but a musician does fall for a singer in the show.
  • De Niro and Minnelli first sang the "New York, New York" song in the movie, but the Frank Sinatra cover is perhaps the most famous version.
  • In an interview with The New York Times, Stroman said New York, New York parallels today's NYC. Just as the city was bouncing back post-war in 1946, it's now bouncing back post-pandemic.
  • They didn't start spreading the news right away — the New York, New York musical was in development for four years before being officially announced for Broadway.
  • New York, New York is the first new Kander and Ebb musical on Broadway since 2015's The Visit. Kander and Ebb are currently also represented on Broadway with Chicago, the second-longest-running Broadway show in history.
