## *Hamilton*, a cultural phenomenon

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical centres on the life of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who was a key figure in shaping the nation. The award-winning hit features a mash-up of hip-hop, R&B, and soul songs performed by a diverse cast.

Orphaned at a young age, Hamilton moved to New York in the hope of a better life. While there, there he impressed those around him with his hunger for revolution and reform. The story sees Hamilton become George Washington's right-hand man, fall in love, and go on to become the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. 

## About *Hamilton the Musical*

The seeds for the *Hamilton* musical were planted when composer Lin-Manuel Miranda purchased a copy of Ron Chernow's biography, *Alexander Hamilton*. Within a few pages, Miranda started to envision the revolutionary's life in musical form and embarked on the project in 2009 by penning *The Hamilton Mixtape* — a number of songs that would later go on to form the show. 

During this time, he was invited to the White House to perform at an evening of Poetry, Music, and Spoken Word in front of President Barack Obama and the First Lady. He treated audiences to the song "Alexander Hamilton", which was met with scattered laughter from the crowd. After workshopping the mixtape, *Hamilton* finally received its Off-Broadway premiere at the Public Theater in 2015 before later transferring to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

## Why does the show *Hamilton* resonate with audiences? 

*Hamilton* has left a major impression on audiences since it first premiered Off-Broadway in 2015. The show offers a unique perspective of one of the lesser-known founding fathers using an innovative approach to make the story more relevant and engaging to a modern audience with its infusion of hip-hop and rap and commitment to diverse casting.

The musical won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it the first musical to win the award since 2010 and the 9th musical to win the accolade since 1930. *Hamilton* went on to win 11 Tony Awards, six Olivier Awards, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

## Who wrote *Hamilton*?

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the *Hamilton* musical. His Hamilton score features a fusion of emotive songs that combine hip-hop, R&B, soul, and classical musical theatre numbers, while the musical is entirely sung-through by its cast. Since its premiere, Hamilton shot into the public consciousness. It won 11 Tony Awards, including Outstanding Musical and all four acting categories.

London welcomed the West End production of *Hamilton* in 2017 at the newly refurbished Victoria Palace Theatre. The musical won a record-equalling seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music. *Hamilton* in London has well and truly found a second home.

The *Hamilton* musical, based on the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton continues to take the world by storm. The epic sung-through musical details the life of the first Secretary of the Treasury in exquisite fashion and you’ll be humming the songs for days on end.

## What to Watch For:

- Most people know that *Hamilton* is a biographical musical detailing the life of the Founding Father. But, creating a musical based on one man isn't easy. So where did Lin-Manuel Miranda get his inspiration from? While on holiday, Lin-Manuel Miranda read Ron Chernow’s biography about the revolutionary, and early ideas for *Hamilton* were born.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda gave a work-in-progress performance of the opening song “Alexander Hamilton” at the White House in 2009 for President Barack Obama. The number would eventually become the show’s opening song. Since then, the original Broadway *Hamilton* cast performed at the White House.
- Miranda isn't a one-trick pony. His other musicals include *In The Heights* and *Bring It On*, and he's also worked on films such as *Moana* and *Encanto.*
- In London, *Hamilton* won seven Olivier Awards from 13 nominations. Currently, it equals the record for most Oliviers won by a musical, tied with *Matilda the Musical*. 
- The *Hamilton* musical features traditional musical theatre songs, but there's plenty of rap too. The rap song “Guns and Ships” performed by the character, Marquis de Lafayette breaks records as the fastest song in any musical. There's an average of 6.3 words per second in the song. That's fast!

Victoria Palace Theatre - TodayTix

The Victoria Palace Theatre opened on 6 Nov. 1911. In 1934, a production of Rev. Walter Reynolds’ *Young England* played here and was so badly reviewed that it enjoyed a cult success, playing 278 performances to full houses. 

Lupino Lane starred in a production of *Me and My Girl* in 1937 which enjoyed success and led to Lane managing the theatre through the end of World War II, starting in early 1945 with a series of variety acts.

In the 1980s, the theatre began its association with musical theatre. Proving to be a long-runner for the venue, *Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story* opened in 1989 and later transferred to the [Novello Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/novello-theatre) in 1995. 

Successful productions of *Jolson*, starring Brian Conley, *Annie* and *Kiss Me, Kate* have resided in the theatre since, but it was the 2005 arrival of a very British musical that saw the theatre packed for 11 years – *[Billy Elliot The Musical](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/billy-elliot)*. The show opened to rave reviews in May 2005, winning four Olivier Awards, and went on to win 10 Tony Awards in its Broadway transfer in 2009.

It was announced in May 2014 that Sir Cameron Mackintosh would buy the theatre through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. Mackintosh closed the theatre in 2016 for an extensive renovation, and the theatre re-opened a year later with [*Hamilton*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/hamilton).

Victor Hugo’s epic French novel of the same name inspires the *Les Misérables* musical. The musical doesn’t focus on the French Revolution of 1789 though. Instead, *Les Misérables* tells an expansive story of one man’s journey to salvation from 1815 to 1832. 

After picking up audience buzz at the Barbican, *Les Misérables* opened at the Palace Theatre on 4 Dec. 1985. Its original cast boasts West End and Broadway talent, including Patti LuPone and Michael Ball.

- Although the show tells of a French revolution, it’s not about the French Revolution we learn about at school. The French revolution took place between 1789 to 1799, and *Les Misérables* takes place from 1815 to 1832. It’s likely that characters in the musical would have served during the French revolution though!
- Every performance includes 392 costumes and 31 wigs.
- To date, there’s the musical has been translated into 21 languages, including six Spanish versions, two German versions, Korean, and Czech.

Another fantastic chapter in West End history has been gloriously (re)written, with not one but two spectacular reinventions -&nbsp;first of a theatre itself, in which the Queen's on Shaftesbury Avenue has been reincarnated as the <a href="/theatres/sondheim-theatre">Sondheim Theatre</a> and completely refurbished by its owner Cameron Mackintosh to restore it from a threadbare functionality to which it had previously been brought back 61 years ago from wartime bomb damage to a glowing and welcoming new warmth. Meanwhile, its current tenant -&nbsp;already the West End's longest-running musical -&nbsp;has itself been entirely overhauled, with Mackintosh taking the opportunity of its temporary 20-week closure for the theatre's refurbishment to replace the original landmark RSC production with a touring version that was first created for a UK tour as part of the show's 25th-anniversary celebrations in 2010. It was briefly seen in London that year at the Barbican - the show's original London home - running contemporaneously with the West End edition, and is even now on a new European and UK tour, currently playing in Zurich before it returns to continue across the regions in March. The first thing to say about it is that it still owes a lot to the original Trevor Nunn and John Caird production -&nbsp;the famous revolve of John Napier's original design may have gone, for instance, but now the actors merely mime the identical movement (originally the work of Kate Flatt, with musical staging now credited to Geoffrey Garratt, long an associate on the original production) as they advance across the stage in the ever-rousing Act One finale of "One Day More" as the iconic red flag is waved above them. Fans of the original will check off numerous such instances, including the indelible image of a dead Enjolras lying across the back of a cart. Crucially, too, the original costume designs of Andreane Neofitou are also retained, so visually there are plenty of references to the original production. There are also several cast veterans of the previous incarnation, including principals Bradley Jaden who was Javert in the final cast of the original and reprises that role now; Jon Robyns, previously Marius and Enjolras, who now graduates to the role of Jean Valjean; and <a href="/actor-profile/carrie-hope-fletcher">Carrie Hope Fletcher</a>, previously Eponine and now playing Fantine (and all three in spectacular voice); amongst others in the ensemble who also include fellow West End returnees Ciaran Bowling, Sarah Lark and Luke McCall. The show remains an ensemble effort, as it was when it was first created by Nunn and Caird. That establishes a welcome sense of continuity from past to present versions, but it is also given a fresh 21st-century inventiveness with Matt Kinley's sets being complemented by stunning painterly projections, inspired by Victor Hugo's own paintings, that have been niftily realised by Fifty-Nine Productions and Finn Ross, all of which are lavishly lit by Paule Constable. Mick Potter's sound is also thrilling, wrapping the theatre is swathes of sumptuous melody, richly played by the pit orchestra under the direction of Steve Moss. As both a producer and theatre owner, Cameron Mackintosh has always been about attention to detail; the reopening of this theatre and show gives him an opportunity to prove his meticulous care in both. But I also love fresh new details, whether it be the reintroduction of rear dress circle boxes that are newly named in honour of Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, or new cast members like West End regular Josefina Gabrielle, who - cast entirely against her usual sophisticated type as Madame Thenardier -&nbsp;is virtually unrecognisable and truly hilarious. The show remains a thrilling triumph. ‘A THRILLING INSPIRATION’ The Guardian

The Sondheim Theatre, formerly known as Queen's Theatre, is a historic venue in London's bustling West End. Opened in 1907 and designed by famed architect W.G.R Sprague, the theatre is a testament to Edwardian Baroque architecture. The Sondheim Theatre opened on 8 Oct. 1907. TThe Sondheim was built as a pair with the Hicks Theatre, now called the [Gielgud Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/gielgud-theatre). 

The theatre was badly damaged in September 1940 when a World War II German bomb dropped directly on the building. The façade and front of house areas were destroyed. It took 20 years before the damage was repaired and the theatre reopened. Whilst the auditorium remained untouched, the exterior and foyer were rebuilt with a modern look.

The theatre has seen performances from several notable stars, including Fred Astaire, Noel Coward, and [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/kenneth-branagh).

## Sondheim Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle.

The Stalls offers good views of the stage, helped by a noticable rake in the seating from Row H onwards. 

The Dress Circle offers good legroom, but the curving of the area means that the sightlines from the outermost seats to suffer. 

The Upper Circle has a very good rake in the seating allowing for good views.
