*MJ the Musical* centres around rehearsals for Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour. When an MTV camera crew arrives to interview Jackson for a documentary, the singer gradually opens up about his turbulent backstory and career. His memories come to life with some of his most famous songs, including “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” “Thriller,” and “Smooth Criminal,” and a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

This production provides a unique look into the unseen elements — including his family relationships, phenomenal talent, and creative imagination — that inspired Jackson’s singular approach to music. As on Broadway, Christopher Wheeldon OBE directs and choreographs *MJ* in London. He won a Tony Award for his choreography, which he co-created with Rich and Tone Talauega, two of Jackson’s former backup dancers and collaborators. They helped Wheeldon to ensure the choreography in the show replicated the pop star’s signature style.

With over 350 million records sold worldwide, Jackson has earned himself spots in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. He is also the only music artist in the Dance Hall of Fame.

## What to watch for

- Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour was record-breaking. It was the biggest tour any performer had done in history, and the staging at every show took three days to set up! 
- The creative team behind this spectacular show are also well-versed in all types of awards. Collectively, they have been nominated for 23, including Emmys, Oliviers and the Pulitzer Prize.
- *MJ the Musical* uses the pop star’s iconic songs in inventive ways. For example, the musical explores Jackson’s rocky relationship with his father through the horror-infused “Thriller.”

The Prince Edward Theatre, one of London's most celebrated theatrical venues, is located in the heart of the city's West End. Opened in 1930, the theatre boasts a rich history and an impressive architectural style with art deco influences. The theatre is famous for hosting ground-breaking productions, with a focus on large-scale musicals. Its 1600-seat auditorium is renowned for the spectacular performances it entertains, and for its elegant and lavish interior. Notable productions include 'Evita', 'Miss Saigon', and the current long-running 'Aladdin'. The theatre was considered special even during its inception, as it was the first theatre built on a steel frame giving it a wider, roomier feel. The Prince Edward theatre is a must-visit for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the captivating world of London Theatre.

## How to Get to the Venue
The Prince Edward Theatre is situated at Old Compton Street, in London's bustling Soho district. It is well served by public transport. To get there, you can take the Tube to Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road station, and then walk for about five minutes. Be aware that this is a particularly busy area of London, so it may be advisable to allow extra time for your journey.

The Prince Edward Theatre in London's West End is renowned for its history, architecture and large-scale musicals. It is easily accessible via Tube.

The Prince Edward Theatre opened in 1930, and was named after the then Prince of Wales, who went on to become Edward VIII. In 1978, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s new musical, *Evita*, made a star of its leading lady, Elaine Paige. Paige then starred in *Chess* and *Anything Goes*, both at the Prince Edward Theatre.

The building was completely refurbished in 1992. Bernard Delfont and Cameron Mackintosh now owned the theatre, and spent over £3 million on remodelling the auditorium, improving the acoustics and increasing the size of the stage. The new Prince Edward Theatre was unveiled in March 1993 with the opening of *Crazy for You*, a Gershwin musical transferring from Broadway.

Delfont Mackintosh Theatres Ltd. continue to renovate the theatre between productions, making the faceight-yearemplary and one of the most desirable spaces in the West End.

## Prince Edward Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – the Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, patrons will find excellent legroom throughout, and a gentle rake throughout the auditorium allows for excellent views. 

The Dress Circle does not offer the same level of legroom, but again offers great views. The last five rows will have their view obstructed by the overhang of the, Grand Circle. 

The Dress Circle loges are a unique feature to this theatre — they take on the form of individual, tiered boxes but with a direct view of the stage rather than the side-on view usually associated with box seats. 

The Grand Circle offers excellent sightlines as the seats are fairly steeply raked.

*Hercules* in London has an excellent development team that has been working on the musical for years. The lyrics are by Tony Award-winning David Zippel (*City of Angels*), and the music is by EGOT Award-winning Alan Menken, who has also written the music for numerous Disney films, including *Beauty and the Beast* and *Aladdin*. The musical's book is by Olivier Award nominee Kwame Kwei-Armah (*Elmina's Kitchen*) and Tony Award winner Robert Horn (*Tootsie*). 

The musical is directed by Casey Nicholaw, who is no stranger to directing Disney stage adaptations. He directed the Broadway version of *Aladdin*. Nicholaw has also earned Tony Awards for directing *The Book of Mormon* and for his choreography of *Some Like It Hot*. 

As the [Broadway World review](https://www.broadwayworld.com/germany/article/Review-Disneys-HERCULES-at-Stage-Theatre-Neue-Flora-20240325) said of Nicholaw's staging, "Director Casey Nicholaw created a powerful, family-friendly show with energetic dance moves framed by a massive set design."

## What to watch for 

- Perhaps the most popular song from the musical and film, *Go The Distance*, was nominated for a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
- Alan Menken wrote the music for *Hercules*, and David Zippel wrote the lyrics; both also wrote the music and lyrics for the original *Hercules* film. 
- Alan Menken is the second most prolific Academy Award winner in the music categories, with eight Oscars. 
- *Hercules*, the film, was followed by a Disney television series called *Hercules: The Animated Series*.

*Hercules*, the audience-favourite Disney film about a young demigod growing up on Earth, comes to the West End stage in an exciting musical adaptation. 

The beloved 1997 Disney film, *Hercules*, comes to the West End stage in an exciting musical adaptation. Book *Hercules* tickets on London Theatre. 

This musical comedy tells the tale of Hercules, the son of Zeus and Hera, who grows up on Earth after Hades makes him mortal. However, Hercules is still left with super strength and spends his life feeling like he doesn’t belong. When he discovers that he is a demigod, he seeks to become a hero to return to Mount Olympus. 

*Hercules* in London includes audience-favourite songs from the film, including *Go The Distance*, which was nominated for a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Song. Other songs included are *From Zero to Hero*, and *I Won’t Say I’m in Love*. 

This show has been years in the making. In 2017, Alan Menken announced he was working on the music for a stage version of *Hercules*. Since then, the production has been created by numerous talented individuals, including Olivier Award nominee Kwame Kwei-Armah and Tony Award winner Robert Horn, who wrote the musical book. 

*Hercules* premiered Off-Broadway in 2019 at Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Manhattan, New York. It then ran at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in 2023, and in 2024, the show opened in Hamburg, Germany. 

*Hercules* is a musical directed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (*Some Like It Hot, The Book of Mormon*). This isn’t Nicholaw’s first time directing a Disney stage adaptation; he also directed the Broadway version of *Aladdin*.

Disney’s hit 1997 film, *Hercules*, comes to the West End in an energetic musical complete with hit songs from the movie like *Go The Distance* and *From Zero to Hero*. 

Ancient Greece. A time of gods, mortals… and Hercules, who doesn't quite belong to either. But if he's not a god, how can he possibly save the world from Hades? It's one thing flexing those pecs, but going from zero to hero requires a different kind of strength. 

Luke Brady will play the lead role *Hercules* in the West End this year.

His stage credits include *As You Like It* (RSC), *SuperYou* (Lyric Theatre), *Assassins* (Chichester Theatre), *The Prince of Egypt* (Dominion Theatre), and *Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice*, and *The Taming of the Shrew* all for Shakespeare’s Globe. On screen, Brady appears in *Fresh Meat* and *Murder on the Orient Express.*

The Theatre Royal Drury Lane opened on 10 Oct. 1812. However, this was not the first theatre on this site – there have been four theatres at this location since 1663. 

Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals played in succession from 1947 starting with *Oklahoma!*, *Carousel* in 1950, *South Pacific* in 1951 and *The King and I* closed the series with a three year run ending in 1956. 

The transfer of musicals from Broadway continued in 1958 with Lerner and Loewe’s *My Fair Lady*, starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison. The writing duo followed this up in 1964 with their next musical, *Camelot*.

Another three-year tPrize-winningransfer danced its way into Drury Lane in July 1976 - the Pulitzer Prize winning *A Chorus Line* came to London with its original Broadway cast and played for almost three years. Stephen Sondheim’s *Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street* also made the move across the pond in 1980.

It was the arrival of the tap-dance heavy *42nd Street* in 1984 that saw the theatre packed and reignited the flame for long-running shows. The show played for five years, before *Miss Saigon* moved in and played over 4,000 performances over a decade.

The auditorium has four levels – Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony. 

The Stalls do offer great views of the stage and the legroom is very good.

In the Royal Circle, the view of the stage is affected from Row H onwards by the overhang of the Grand Circle. The seats do feel quite set back from the stage, but the view is generally very good.

The Upper Circle feels relatively close to the stage for its height and views from this level of the theatre are surprisingly good.

The Balcony is set very high up and although a strong rake helps to give good sightlines to the stage many people have suffered from vertigo at this level.
