*Oh, Mary!* is one of Broadway’s most unexpected breakouts, having been praised for its audacity and inventiveness. Escola’s script twists American history into an absurdist tale, imagining Mary Todd Lincoln as the frustrated, unsatisfied wife whose ambitions are thwarted by her gay, closeted husband and a world that doesn’t take her seriously.

The play is quick and hilariously self-aware, filled with slapstick humour and the theatrical equivalent of a fever dream. Beneath the absurdity, however, lies a piece of tender exploration of repression and the desire to be loved and seen. 

This London staging boasts a wonderful creative team, including costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, sound designers Daniel Kluger and Drew Levy, and original music by Daniel Kluger.

*All My Sons* in London was first performed in 1947 and was Arthur Miller’s breakthrough play. A devastating glimpse into moral decay and the middle-class illusion in postwar America, it reminds those who watch that even the best-kept secrets may one day spill out, and that the perception of success is not as strong as one might think.

Director Ivo van Hove approaches the play with his trademark visual clarity and emotional intimacy, exposing the raw, human core at the centre of this story. His staging reframes Miller’s work, not merely as a postwar tragedy but as a timeless study of the corruption of power, not just in one single family but in the systems that surround us. 

This revival reunites van Hove with Bryan Cranston, whose stage presence brings new understanding and great vulnerability to the character of Joe Keller. Along with a most talented cast is the talented creative team, including scene and lighting designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D’Huys, and sound designer Tom Gibbons.

## What to watch for 

- *All My Sons* was first adapted into a film in 1948, directed by Irving Reis. It was nominated for Best Written American Drama and the Robert Meltzer Award.
- The band, Twenty One Pilots, takes its name from the play after the lead singer, Tyler Joseph, read it in theatre class.
- This will mark van Hove’s third production of a Miller play, following *A View from the Bridge* and *The Crucible*.

Her stage credits include *The Amen Corner, hang* by debbie tucker green, and *Paris of The Suit (Le Costume*). She was nominated for an Ian Charleson Award at the beginning of her career, for playing in Cheek by Jowl’s *Measure for Measure.*

On screen, she was recently nominated for a BAFTA for her acclaimed performance in Mike Leigh’s film *Hard Truths*.

Bryan Cranston started his acting career at his local theatre in the San Fernando Valley, the Granada Theatre, after studying police science in Los Angeles. To fund his time as an aspiring actor, Cranston became an ordained minister and performed weddings at $150 a time. Worked picked up in the 1980s, and Cranston started acting mostly in television adverts and minor roles in sitcoms.

Cranston’s screen career began to gain pace after he became an original cast member in the ABC show Loving. He then forged a career dubbing the English voices of Japanese anime cartoons under the name Lee Stone, and in 1993, he played a number of characters on the children’s TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

A number of roles in shows such as Seinfeld and The X Files led to Cranston being cast in the US comedy series Malcolm in the Middle as Hal, the father of the Wilkerson family. The show ran for just over six years and established Cranston as a comic actor. However, two years after the show ended, Vince Gilligan (who wrote the episode of The X Files Cranston appeared in), cast the actor in his new series Breaking Bad, which followed an ordinary chemistry teacher who turned to manufacturing methamphetamine to pay for his cancer treatment. As the show became a cult hit, Cranston garnered huge praise for the role, winning four Emmy Awards for the part.

As Breaking Bad took off, Cranston managed to gain a reputation as a serious dramatic actor, without shaking his charm as a comic one. He made his Broadway debut in 2014 in All the Way, a play about President Lyndon B Johnson’s attempts to put in place the Civil Rights Act of 1984. Cranston played President Johnson, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. For the New York Times, Charles Isherwood stated “Mr Cranston’s heat-generating performance galvanizes the production”.

In November 2017, Cranston made his UK theatre debut in Network&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National Theatre</a>.&nbsp;Adapted by Lee Hall and directed by Ivo van Hove, the production was based on the Paddy Chayefsky film depicting Howard Beale, an American news anchor failing to pull in viewing figures. During his final broadcast, he begins to rant about the state of the nation, which proves to be wildly popular.&nbsp;Cranston then starred in the Broadway transfer of&nbsp;Network, winning a second Tony in 2019.

Cranston is now starring in Ivo van Hove's *All My Sons* with Paapa Essiedu and Marianne-Jean Baptiste.

Named after its founder and famed actor-manager Charles Wyndham, the **Wyndham's Theatre** is a classic London West End theatre that stands on Charing Cross Road in the City of Westminster. Opened in 1899, the theatre was designed by W G R Sprague, an architect who was also responsible for many other West End theatres. It has a strong reputation for high-quality drama, which is part of its charm and attractiveness. The exterior contains a beautiful portico in the classical style, while the interior is adorned with luxurious ornate plasterwork. Over its history, Wyndham's Theatre has hosted a wide variety of productions, including 'God of Carnage', 'Art', and 'Donkeys' Years'.

**Getting to the Wyndham's Theatre:**

Wyndham's Theatre is easily accessible by multiple modes of transport. The closest Underground station, Leicester Square, is just a two-minute walk away, offering connections via the Northern and Piccadilly lines. Several bus stop directly outside the theatre, including routes 24, 29 and 176. Limited on-street paid parking is available. National car park at St Martin’s Lane Hotel offers a discount to theatre patrons, but the venue encourages sustainable transport options where possible.

The Wyndham’s Theatre opened on 16 Nov. 1899. The theatre was commissioned by Charles Wyndham who also managed the [Criterion Theatre.](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/criterion-theatre) 

The Wyndham’s welcomed its first long-running production – Sandy Wilson’s musical *The Boyfriend* which opened on 14 Jan. 1959 and ran for over 2,000 performances. Another successful musical came to the theatre in 1972, the Roundhouse’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s *Godspell*, which ran for three years. The theatre has seen many notable actors grace the stage, including Alec Guinness, [Vanessa Redgrave](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/vanessa-redgrave), Diana Rigg and Madonna.

In May 2005, the Wyndham’s Theatre was bought by Cameron Mackintosh through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. The theatre was renovated in 2008 and plays regularly run for limited engagements at the Wyndham's Theatre.

## Wyndham's Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

In the Stalls, the front four rows of seating are not raked, but other than that the seats in the Stalls offer excellent views of the stage.

Only the seats in Row G of the Royal Circle are affected by the overhang of the Grand Circle. Seats are well raked, offering great views of the stage.

The Grand Circle is set very high in this theatre.

The Balcony is set behind and above the Grand Circle, so does feel far from the stage, but the view is unobstructed.
