Journey into an Irish Pub in the early 1900’s on the wildest day of one man’s life in *The Playboy of the Western World*. This comedic drama is by John Millington Synge, with this brilliant revival directed by Caitríona McLaughlin. Book *The Playboy of the Western World* tickets on London Theatre.

Instead, they revel. Suddenly, the community has a new legend to worship. Pegeen Flaherty, the barmaid, finds that her own life is cracking open with the possibility of something new and exciting. As Christy’s tale grows taller, the attention grows hotter, until someone arrives who threatens to expose the truth. 

First performed in Dublin in 1907, Synge’s three-act show became infamous for the trouble it caused. Riots broke out in Dublin by angry locals who believed the show was an insult to morale and to Ireland. It’s a play that challenged the romantic myths about rural Ireland while remaining humourous, and shining a light on status and the stories we create about ourselves and others.

## How to Get to Lyttelton Theatre 

Based in South Bank, the theatre is well connected to London's various transport options. Nearest tubes include Waterloo Station, serviced by the Northern, Jubilee, Bakerloo, and Waterloo & City lines. From Waterloo Station, the theatre is just a few minutes walk via Waterloo Bridge. Several bus services also pass close to the theatre, including routes 1, 4, 26, 59, 68, 76, 168, 171, 172, 176, 188, and X68. Driving is not recommended due to limited parking facilities.

The Lyttelton Theatre takes its name from the first board chairman of the National Theatre, Oliver Lyttelton. It is one of three auditoriums in the [National Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/national-theatre):  the [Olivier Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/olivier-theatre-national) and the [Dorfman Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/dorfman-theatre-national). The 890-seat theatre is smaller than most West End houses, and offers a very intimate theatrical experience.

The theatre was designed with a traditional proscenium arch. The proscenium arch may be adjusted to create different stage spaces, as well as accommodating an orchestra pit.

*Oh, Mary!* is one of Broadway’s most unexpected breakouts, having been praised for its audacity and inventiveness. Escola’s script twists American history into an absurdist tale, imagining Mary Todd Lincoln as the frustrated, unsatisfied wife whose ambitions are thwarted by her gay, closeted husband and a world that doesn’t take her seriously.

The play is quick and hilariously self-aware, filled with slapstick humour and the theatrical equivalent of a fever dream. Beneath the absurdity, however, lies a piece of tender exploration of repression and the desire to be loved and seen. 

This London staging boasts a wonderful creative team, including costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, sound designers Daniel Kluger and Drew Levy, and original music by Daniel Kluger.

 Trafalgar Theatre is conveniently located near several Underground stations with Charing Cross being the closest - a mere 2-minute walk. The Trafalgar Theatre opened in the West End theatre in summer 2021. Named the Trafalgar Theatre, the playhouse combines the two smaller studio spaces at Trafalgar Studios: Trafalgar Studio One and Trafalgar Studio Two. 

The Grade II listed Trafalgar Theatre will feature a new single auditorium, with a capacity similar to the [Duke of York’s Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/duke-of-yorks-theatre) and the [Vaudeville Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/vaudeville-theatre). *All My Sons* in London was first performed in 1947 and was Arthur Miller’s breakthrough play. A devastating glimpse into moral decay and the middle-class illusion in postwar America, it reminds those who watch that even the best-kept secrets may one day spill out, and that the perception of success is not as strong as one might think.

Director Ivo van Hove approaches the play with his trademark visual clarity and emotional intimacy, exposing the raw, human core at the centre of this story. His staging reframes Miller’s work, not merely as a postwar tragedy but as a timeless study of the corruption of power, not just in one single family but in the systems that surround us. 

This revival reunites van Hove with Bryan Cranston, whose stage presence brings new understanding and great vulnerability to the character of Joe Keller. Along with a most talented cast is the talented creative team, including scene and lighting designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D’Huys, and sound designer Tom Gibbons.

## What to watch for 

- *All My Sons* was first adapted into a film in 1948, directed by Irving Reis. It was nominated for Best Written American Drama and the Robert Meltzer Award.
- The band, Twenty One Pilots, takes its name from the play after the lead singer, Tyler Joseph, read it in theatre class.
- This will mark van Hove’s third production of a Miller play, following *A View from the Bridge* and *The Crucible*.
