Down-on-his-luck Broadway producer Max Bialystock schemes with timid accountant Leo Bloom to create the biggest flop in theatre history - only to have it backfire spectacularly, and with thunderous applause. 

Born in Leicester in 1966, the British actor, writer, director is best known for co-creating and starring in the stage play and subsequent film adaptation of *[Ghost Stories](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/ghost-stories)*. He also gave an Olivier Award-nominated performance as Tevye in the [Menier Chocolate Factory](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/menier-chocolate-factory) production of *[Fiddler on the Roof](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/fiddler-on-the-roof)*. 

Training at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Nyman’s appeared in films since the start of the millennium, including noteworthy performances in *Dead Babies* and portraying a freedom fighter during World War Two in *Uprising*. However, his breakout film role came in 2006, when he starred in *Shut Up and Shoot Me*, a black comedy where he took the Best Actor award at the Cherbourg-Octeville Festival of Irish & British Film. Recently, he’s starred in the Judy Garland biopic *Judy* as Dan, also lending his voice to the Minions in animated films including *Minions* and *Despicable Me 3*.

As well as a writer and actor, Nyman is also one of the country’s finest magicians and illusionists. He’s worked with Derren Brown on his televised and West End productions, co-writing and co-directing four of Brown’s stage shows including *Enigma* and *Something Wicked This Way Comes*, winnng an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment in 2006.

Nyman is also the co-creator of *Ghost Stories*, a horror play which received its world premiere at the Liverpool Playhouse in 2010. Subsequently transferring to the [Lyric Hammersmith](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/lyric-hammersmith-theatre), the play’s eventual West End transfer came in the same year, playing over 1,000 performances at the [Duke of York's Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/duke-of-yorks-theatre) and ending its run in 2015. After its stage success, Ghost Stories was adapted for the silver screen in 2017, with Nyman starring as Professor Phillip Goodman in a cast that included [Martin Freeman](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/martin-freeman), Alex Lawther and Paul Whitehouse.

In 2019, audiences were spooked by the terrifying tales in Ghost Stories once more, as the play was performed at the Lyric Hammersmith and a West End transfer at the [Ambassadors Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/ambassadors-theatre), with the cast including Nyman’s son, Preston. 

Nyman’s notable stage credits include Syd in the West End transfer of Martin McDonagh’s *Hangmen* in a cast including Johnny Flynn and David Morrissey, as well as a London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s *Assassins* at the Menier Chocolate Factory. But in 2018, Nyman returned to the Menier to star as leading patriarch Tevye in *Fiddler on the Roof*, directed by Trevor Nunn. The sell-out production eventually transferred to the [Playhouse Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/playhouse-theatre), receiving eight Olivier Award nominations and Nyman earning an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.

The theatre became associated with comedy in 1982 with a four-year run of the farce *No Sex Please, We’re British*. This was the longest-running show at the Garrick, until J. B. Priestley’s *An Inspector Calls* transferred from the [Aldwych Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/aldwych-theatre) in 1995 and resided for six years.

In recent years, a number of musicals have played here, including *A Little Night Music*, *Chicago*, and *The Scottsboro Boys*. In 2015, [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/kenneth-branagh) took up residency at the Garrick for a year-long season of plays with his own theatre company. 

## Garrick Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, the view of the top of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle from Row N onwards. 

In the Dress Circle, the view of the stage is not obscured by the overhang of the Upper Circle, but the ceiling can feeel low for those in the last row. The seats are designed in a horseshoe shape around the theatre and the Dress Circle offers good sightlines.

- Although all the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters are fictional, they’re based on real people. Harold Zidler’s name is inspired by the club's co-founder, Charles Zidler.

This, mon chérie, is an all-new, all-adrenaline rush of a show that leverages the movie's magic and adds the secret ingredient: theatrical magic.&nbsp;Timbers is not afraid to use every tool in his directing arsenal with this self-aware, but not self-conscious, amalgamation of vintage and modern, classic and contemporary. Every creative team member is clearly working overtime to deliver excellence and opulence.Seventy-plus pop songs, precisely arranged by music supervisor Justin Levine? Check. Show-stopping ensemble dance numbers choreographed like a pop concert by Sonya Tayeh? You bet. A veritable smorgasbord of lighting effects from designer Justin Townsend? Of course. Jewel-dripping bodices and crushed velvet for days in Catherine Zuber's elaborate ensembles? Bien sûr.However, sometimes extravagance can mask the cracks, which make the barrier between art and life transparent. On Wednesday night's performance, this show-stopper literally stopped. During Act 2, between high-energy ensemble numbers "Chandelier" and "Roxanne," the show was held due to technical difficulties for about 20 minutes.&nbsp;While stage management handled everything smoothly and professionally, the momentary pause felt like watching a show within a show within a show. After all, Moulin Rouge! The Musical catalogues the backstage drama of the eponymous nightclub struggling to make it while putting on a new production.Here we were in the audience, watching a company that's weathered more than its share of Covid difficulties and delays with an opening twice-postponed, still doing their thing and putting on a show, despite the hardship.It's a testament to resilience and artistry, something that both the show and this company clearly celebrate. The leading lovers, played by Liisi LaFontaine and Jamie Bogyo, deliver a youthful energy that belies their characters' weary struggles, and each is charming and well-sung.&nbsp;However, the standouts of the evening are in the supporting cast and the ensemble. As writer and unabashed bohemian Toulouse-Lautrec, Jason Pennycooke steals every scene he's in, and Elia Lo Tauro oozes charisma as Christian's rapscallion friend Santiago. Clive Carter channels Jim Broadbent from the film in a pitch-perfect portrayal of the club's emcee Harold Zidler, and every ensemble dancer deserves their own shoutout for the hard work and energy they're delivering onstage.&nbsp;After all, theatre and the Moulin Rouge are about family and community, something we've all been missing these past few years. Watching a powerful show where despite trials onstage and off, the power and perseverance of the human spirit is what overcomes, is healing. The Piccadilly Theatre opened on 27 Apr. 1928. The Piccadilly Theatre opened with a production of *Blue Eyes*, but then the theatre was turned into a cinema by Warner Brothers and was the house of the very first talking picture to be shown in England – Al Jolson in *The Singing Fool*. 

Suffering considerable damage during World War II, the venue had to be partially rebuilt and reopened again in April 1945 with a production of Agatha Christie’s *Appointment with Death*.

The Piccadilly Theatre is also known for the ITV variety show *Live From the Piccadilly* which began in 1986, playing on Sunday evenings and hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck. The Stalls offers very good views of the stage, with a noticeable rake in the seating.

The overhang of the Royal Circle affects the view from Row F onwards, but the seating at this level is very well raked which allows for excellent views.

The Grand Circle is well-raked, allowing good views of the stage, but the legroom is rather slim at this level.
