A liberal school trying to make sense of its progressive vaccine policies may sound all too familiar in our post-pandemic world. However, that’s the brilliance of Jonathan Spector’s new play. *Eureka Day* was written in 2018, before COVID, lending it a timeless and universal appeal. Following successful runs in the Bay Area, where it won the Glickman Award and Bay Area Theater Critics Circle Award, it then traveled to London, earning rave reviews, before coming back to the United States for its Broadway bow.

The political gets personal in Spector’s play, which also lends it a sharp, biting humor. Private schools can have an air of taking themselves too seriously, which Spector wittily satirizes as he depicts the big wigs at small schools who won’t give an inch in the face of evolving events and a changing culture. Fans of cringe-comedy sit-coms and intellectual new plays will find lots to love in this dynamo hit.

## What to watch for

- Anna D. Shapiro is known for staging *August: Osage County*, for which she won a Tony; a marvel director with a knack for new plays, she was also artistic director of Steppenwolf in Chicago.
- Manhattan Theatre Club has a track record for producing intelligent new plays that help audiences confront modern issues, as seen in *Proof, Doubt*, and *The Children*.
- Many plays are developed in New York, and sometimes in Chicago, but plays about and coming out of California are rarer, making this an auspicious debut for Jonathan Spector.
- Enjoying rave reviews for its London run, London Theatre praised the amazing humor in Eureka Day but also commended how the play “gets to the root of a deeper issue: our increasingly polarised world, in which arguments are based on feeling, not fact, and we become ever-more entrenched in our culture-wars tribes.”

Get *Eureka Day* tickets to see the crowd-pleasing, smart comedy that’s wowed international audiences. See *Eureka Day* on Broadway in a new, Tony Award-nominated production from Anna D. Shapiro.

Get *Eureka Day* tickets and see the latest production of the acclaimed new, Tony Award-nominated comedy featuring an all-star cast. Jessica Hecht (Tony Award nominated for *A View from the Bridge* and *Summer, 1976*), Bill Irwin (*Old Hats*), Thomas Middleditch (Emmy Award nominee for *Silicon Valley*), and more co-star in an award-winning comedy about school politics, progressive ideals, and... vaccines.

Experience *Eureka Day* on Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Tony Award winner Anna D. Shapiro (*August: Osage County*) directs this new play making its Broadway premiere. Following smash hit runs in London and San Francisco, *Eureka Day* follows the politics and personalities of a selective, private California elementary school.

At Eureka Day, the Board of Directors values inclusion above all else — until a case of the mumps forces the entire community to reconsider the school’s progressive vaccine policy. As cases rise, the board realizes with outrage that they’ll have to, finally and funnily, come to a decision that is impossible to please everyone.

Written before COVID, the play continues to be ahead of its time — and hilarious as a school navigates a bumpy path forward. Audiences will see reflections of modern society, sometimes in alarming but always in uproarious ways. At Eureka Day, as in life, the personal gets political pretty quickly.

The play has enjoyed many rave reviews. Earning four stars from London Theatre, Spector’s “sharply comic and fascinatingly prescient play” traces “rich dramatic terrain and is incredibly funny.” Evening Standard wrote in a four-star review that the play is “a needle-sharp comedy that packs a smart and timely punch.”

*Eureka Day* tickets are on sale on New York Theatre Guide.
