*Real Women Have Curves* has had a long journey and is finally making its way to Broadway. Starting off as a play by Josefina López, the work was adapted into a Sundance hit in 2002, winning the Audience Award for best dramatic film and the Special Jury Prize for acting. The play and film were both celebrated for their realistic portrayal of Latino family dynamics and culture.

Ultimately, this new musical is an inspiring one — *Real Women Have Curves* “makes us feel we can all soar” per WBUR. While the film very much follows a Latino family, its themes of community, duty, and choosing to pursue your own goals despite the one ancestors may have laid for you are highly relatable to many families. A celebration of one woman’s resilience and ambition, this musical is one that tells a distinctly American story. See how 200 dresses transform a family business — and its future.

## What to watch for

- *Real Women Have Curves* is a “winner, with a big heart and joyous abandon” per The Boston Globe.
- The story is acclaimed because it has many layers: it is a coming-of-age drama centered on a mother-daughter conflict. It also explores the immigrant experience, the battle to accept oneself, and the importance of personal dignity.
- Body positivity is a theme in the story as Ana is expected to look a certain way in her mother’s eyes.
- The New York Times praised the film adaptation as “effervescent and satisfying, a crowd pleaser that does not condescend.”

An inspiring and hilarious story about the choices we make to become our best selves while still supporting the community around us, *Real Women Have Curves* “makes us feel we can all soar” per WBUR.

Now, the play will make new stars in this fresh production directed and choreographed by Tony winner Sergio Trujillo (*On Your Feet*).

James Earl Jones Theatre

The James Earl Jones Theatre, formerly called the Cort Theatre, officially opened on December 20, 1912, with *Peg o' My Heart* starring Laurette Taylor. The venue was originally named after John Cort, founder of the Northwestern Theatrical Association. He commissioned Thomas W. Lamb to design the theatre, which would mirror the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

The Shubert Organization acquired the theatre in 1927, two years before Cort’s death. It has always been used as a traditional theatre except for the years from 1969 to 1972, when it became a television studio with the broadcast of *The Merv Griffin Show*.

Renovation work began at the Cort Theatre in 2021, and the venue reopened in 2022 under its new name. The building is now named for James Earl Jones, the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winning actor known for voice roles in *The Lion King* and *Star Wars* films and stage performances in shows including *The Great White Hope* and *Fences*, which both earned him Tony Awards. He also earned a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2017.
