Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* is a vital American play that first premiered on Broadway in 1935 as part of the Group Theatre, a New York City theatre company of which Odets was a member. The play was unique for modern dramas at the time: it was performed in vignettes and featured fiery social commentary, which was a reflection of its era. The play debuted during the Great Depression, and Americans' economic uncertainties were reflected on stage in the story of taxi drivers fighting for a living wage.

Today, themes of affordability and workers' rights continue to resonate, and director Steven Pasquale has found a unique angle into the piece by bringing in his own musical and theatrical background — this bold production weaves in elements of movement and music to bring new life to this masterwork. Audiences can expect a thrilling and singular revival, which is what has come to define works at Classic Stage Company.

## What to watch for
- Director Steven Pasquale is no stranger to Classic Stage Company; he recently performed in its production of *Assassins*.
- The cast features Tony nominee Tala Ashe and Greg Hildreth amongst other New York stalwart theatre performers.
- The Morning Telegraph's review of the original play said it was "an event of historical importance."
- Among Clifford Odets’ other best-known plays are *Awake and Sing, Paradise Lost*, and *Golden Boy.*

Get Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* tickets on New York Theatre Guide and see Drama Desk Award nominee Steven Pasquale make his directorial debut staging a fresh revival of Odets' masterwork about the hopes and sacrifices of New York's workers. Odets is known for his groundbreaking plays that brought social justice to mainstream stages, and, almost a century later, his impassioned drama about this city's workers returns to New York. Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* plays for a limited run this fall at Classic Stage Company, a home for reimagined works.

In this storied drama, vignettes share the lives of taxi drivers who fight for union rights. The Morning Telegraph praised the original Broadway run, noting "that a dramatist to be reckoned with had been discovered" in Odets. Pasquale's new production brings in music and movement to energize this story of social reckoning.

“This year, we're revisiting iconic works and infusing them with the energy of today’s most innovative theatrical artists," Jill Rafson, Producing Artistic Director, said in a statement. "Expect a season defined by soaring music, bold theatricality, and sharp comedy. These productions are designed to make you think, feel, and laugh—leaving you galvanized to ask new questions and share the experience with everyone you know."

Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* off Broadway features original music and arrangements by Yeller Tooth (Sahar Milani and Cameron Scoggins) and a cast that includes Tony Award nominee Tala Ashe (*English*), Raffi Barsoumian (*Macbeth, Les Liaisons Dangereuses*), Greg Hildreth (*I Can Get It For You Wholesale, The Queen of Versailles*), and others. Pasquale is also no stranger to Classic Stage Company: he starred in its recent revival of *Assassins*.

Don't miss his directorial debut with Clifford Odets’ *Waiting for Lefty* in New York — tickets are now on sale on New York Theatre Guide.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the most acclaimed works of 2022, the five-time Tony Award-nominated *English*, written by Iranian American playwright Sanaz Toossi, plays on Broadway following its world premiere with Roundabout Theatre Company and Atlantic Theater Company. Get *English* tickets on New York Theatre Guide now.

*English* is a play that takes place in an Iranian classroom. A group of four adult students are preparing to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or the TOEFL. The classroom’s one rule is that they may only speak English. The idea excites them, and they test their skill throughout the play through word games, listening practice, and show-and-tell. They hope learning English will “make them whole,” but they risk losing their connection to their native tongue in the process, creating a gap between their English-speaking and Farsi-speaking selves.

Toossi premiered a one-act play during Atlantic’s Middle Eastern MixFest in 2018, curated by Mona Mansour and Heather Raffo. Three years later, Atlantic produced *English* off Broadway in Toossi’s full-length professional debut as a playwright. *English* won a place on the 2019 Kilroys List and was an L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award winner. Following its Off-Broadway premiere, the show earned widespread [critical acclaim](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/english-atlantic-theater-company-off-broadway-review), a 2022 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Play, a 2023 Obie Award for Best New American Play, and the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Drama Desk Award-nominated director Knud Adams, who staged the play's world premiere, returns for *English* on Broadway. Both he and Toossi are making their Broadway debuts.

Tickets to *English* in New York are available now.

English - NYC - New York Theatre Guide

Winner of the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Obie Award for Best New American Play, Sanaz Toossi's five-time Tony Award-nominated *English* follows four adult students and their teacher in an English as a second language course. Discover the victories and challenges that unfold in the process, including how a new language shapes one's sense of identity.

*English* is a play set entirely inside a single classroom occupied by four adult students in Iran and their teacher: Elham, Goli, Roya, Marjan, and Omid. They are studying to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language, better known as the TOEFL. They all believe that learning English is what they need to fill something inside them that's missing. But as they undergo listening, speaking, and writing exercises and games to test their proficiency, they realize that English might actually be causing division between them and their mother tongue.

Toossi's work was first, and last, seen at Atlantic Theater Company in 2018, when she premiered a one-act play at the company's MixFest for Middle Eastern playwrights. She was slated to make her professional debut with her other play *Wish You Were Here* at the 2020 Williamstown Theatre Festival, but the production was canceled amid the pandemic.

Instead, Atlantic and Roundabout's production of *English* off Broadway was Toossi's first full-length production. And what a debut it was, winning the Pulitzer alongside an Obie Award for Best New American Play.

## What to watch for

- Toossi and Adams both make their Broadway debuts with *English*.
- *English* received praise before it even premiered! The play received an L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award and was selected for the 2019 Kilroys List, an honor given to new and underproduced plays by non-male writers.
- The TOEFL is used to evaluate non-native speakers who want to study at English-speaking universities. It's one of two major English-language tests in the world; the other is the International English Language Testing System, or IELTS.
- Ever take the SAT or ACT in high school? Then you might have an idea of what taking the TOEFL is like. The preparation is just as intense, and the test is just as long — it takes nearly 4 hours to complete!
- In the same season *English* premiered, spring 2022, another Toossi play, *Wish You Were Here*, was also staged for the first time at Playwrights Horizons.
