Steve Coogan will star in Stanley Kubrick’s *Dr Strangelove* at the Noël Coward Theatre in London’s West End. Book *Dr Strangelove* tickets on London Theatre today.

Based on the 1964 Cold War political satire film, *Dr Strangelove* centres on a deranged U.S. Air Force general, General Jack D. Ripper, who becomes convinced that the Soviet Union is planning to poison Americans. In his delusional state, he orders a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union without the approval of the U.S. government. As chaos ensues, it becomes a frantic race against time to prevent the impending nuclear doomsday.

Stanley Kubrick directed, co-wrote, and produced the *Dr. Strangelove* film. Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest films ever made, it earned four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Peter Sellers, who portrayed three roles, including the title character.

Similar to Seller’s, Coogan will step into the shoes of multiple characters in the stage adaptation. BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning Armando Iannucci will co-adapt the production with Sean Foley, who will direct.

Coogan is renowned for portraying the bumbling and self-absorbed radio and television presenter Alan Partridge. He also wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed film *Philomena* alongside Dame Judi Dench, which earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2013.

Book your *Dr Strangelove* tickets on London Theatre today.

Steve Coogan is best known for his character Alan Partridge, a bumbling and self-absorbed radio and television presenter. He created the character in the 1990s and has continued to play him in various projects, including TV series, radio shows, and a feature film. Coogan won a BAFTA in 2013 for his work on the critically acclaimed movie *Philomena*, which he also starred in alongside Dame Judi Dench.

Coogan previously worked with Armando Iannucci on the BBC radio comedy *On the Hour* thirty years ago. Sean Foley will direct and co-adapt the play, who is known for his Olivier Award-winning comedy *The Play What I Wrote* which was a hilarious celebration of the British comedy double act Morecambe and Wise.

## What to watch for

- The film's full title is quite a mouthful and commonly goes by *Dr Strangelove* for short. But it underwent several changes during production. Initially titled *Edge of Doom* and then *Ariel, Deterrence, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb,* it was finally settled as *Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb*.
- Coogan has received critical acclaim for his roles in films such as *24 Hour Party People,* where he portrayed Tony Wilson, and *Philomena,* where he starred alongside Dame Judi Dench. His performance in *Philomena* earned him an Academy Award nomination.
- Slim Pickens, who plays Major T.J. "King" Kong, famously rides a nuclear bomb like a bucking bronco in the film's memorable climax. This scene has become an enduring symbol of the film's dark humour.

The Noël Coward Theatre opened as the New Theatre on 12 Mar. 1903. In 1973, the theatre’s name was changed from the New Theatre to the Albery Theatre, as a tribute to the theatre’s long-serving manager Sir Bronson Albery. Sir Cameron Mackintosh acquired the theatre through his company, Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, in 2005 and renamed the theatre in memory of the famous playwright, Noel Coward.

The theatre famously played host to two theatre companies whose theatres were destroyed during the Blitz – the [Old Vic](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/old-vic-theatre) and [Sadler’s Wells](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sadlers-wells) both performed at the theatre until their new theatres were built in the 1950s.

The theatre also played host to the premiere of Lionel Bart’s world famous musical *Oliver!* The show was a huge success, running for 2,618 performances.

Several notable actors have appeared in productions at the theatre, including [Judi Dench](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/judi-dench), [Helen Mirren](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/helen-mirren) and [Patrick Stewart](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/patrick-stewart).
