LIL is a fighter, but not as well-known as her older brother BIG. What happens when she shows up on his doorstep and challenges him to a match?

See this showdown between younger sister and older brother. Not just any showdown: a fight. *The Monsters* plays off Broadway this winter in a world premiere co-production at Manhattan Theatre Club with Two River Theater in New Jersey. Ngozi Anyanwu (*Good Grief, The Homecoming Queen, The Last of the Love Letters*) writes and directs this new play that packs a wallop in its fierce examination of family, gender, and competition.

Experience *The Monsters* off Broadway, playing at New York City Center, and meet LIL and BIG. LIL's a fighter, but her older brother BIG is more famous in that arena. However, as LIL's appetite for a big fight grows, BIG's reputation wanes: he's an aging star in the local Mixed Martial Arts circuit. LIL has been training from afar... until she shows up on her big brother's doorstep, challenging him to a single match.

Away from your sibling for years, do wounds heal or fester? A story about the reunions, resentment, reconnection, rivalry, and bond between siblings — and wrestling with demons that never quite go away — *The Monsters* is a singular new play from a shimmering voice.

Anyanwu is a 2020 Steinberg Playwright Award winner and recently had the world premiere of her newest play *Leroy and Lucy* at The Steppenwolf Theatre during the fall of 2024. Her other plays have also won acclaim: *Good Grief* was on the Kilroys List 2016 and a semi-finalist for the Princess Grace Award, and won the Humanitas Award. Ngozi also has been commissioned by NYU, The Old Globe, Two River Theater, The Atlantic Theater, and Steppenwolf.

Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

This epic show follows Alexander Hamilton’s rise from nothing to become George Washington’s right-hand man, America’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and friend-turned-enemy of Aaron Burr – the man who would eventually kill him in an infamous duel.

Surrounding *Hamilton* in the musical are plenty of real-life historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, the Marquis de Lafayette, and more. They make mischief throughout the show as they navigate the behemoth task of founding a new country and creating a government.

Miranda was first inspired to write an Alexander Hamilton musical in 2008 after reading Ron Chernow’s 700-page biography of the Founding Father on vacation. Miranda had just won the Best Musical Tony Award for *In the Heights* that year, so then-President Barack Obama invited him to perform a song from the show at the 2009 White House Poetry Jam. Instead, Miranda surprised everyone by busting out an early version of his budding musical’s opening number.

The rest, as they say, is history. *Hamilton* premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015, transferring later that year to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. For writing *Hamilton's* book, music, and lyrics, Miranda would become a household name.

It seemed ludicrous at first, but to Miranda, Alexander Hamilton embodied hip-hop. *Hamilton* director Thomas Kail later explained in an interview: “You have someone born into very difficult circumstances — profound poverty, no parents, no support — who used words to elevate himself out of those circumstances, and then died violently because of those words. That’s a classic hip-hop story. It’s the story of Tupac or Big.”

## What to watch for

- Miranda initially conceived *Hamilton* as a record called *The Hamilton Mixtape*, but Kail encouraged him to develop a full musical. *The Hamilton Mixtape* was later released as a companion album to the show.
- *In the Heights*, about a small community in New York’s Washington Heights, has lots of parallels with *Hamilton*. Miranda’s longtime collaborators Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler (*Hamilton*’s choreographer) were involved in that production, and *In the Heights* also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
- The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the show’s original cast recording.
- *Hamilton* is full of homages to other shows. The lyric “Nobody needs to know” comes directly from Jason Robert Brown’s *The Last Five Years*. George Washington’s line “I’m the model of a modern major general” is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s *Pirates of Penzance*. *Hamilton* also quotes a line from *Macbeth*: "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day."
- *Hamilton* made history musicals cool and fresh, but Miranda’s isn’t the first musical about the American Revolution. His show is predated by the 1969 Best Musical winner *1776*, which follows John Adams as he tries to convince his fellow politicians to declare independence from Britain.

Winner of Pulitzer, Tony, Grammy, and Emmy honors, *Hamilton* is a groundbreaking musical that not only dramatizes the Founding Fathers' lives, but also celebrates the outsider, the newcomer, and the hands that build a new country. A smash hit, Time Out New York called the show “the greatest American musical in decades.” The musical features a cast largely of people of color to showcase the diversity of backgrounds who make up a country.

- Miranda was inspired to create *Hamilton* after reading Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton during a vacation. He initially conceived Hamilton as a record called *The Hamilton Mixtape*, which was later released as a companion album to the show.
- There are many distinct characters in *Hamilton*, including “The Bullet,” who plays a lethal role in the Burr-Hamilton duel. Oscar winner Ariana DeBose played that role in the original cast.
