*Affluenza* in London is the opening production in Riverside Studios’ Mainstage Season 26/27, a programme featuring five new plays. Its world premiere also introduces a season mainly focused on contemporary American stories with hard-hitting themes.

Writer and director Andy Sandberg is also a Tony Award-winning producer whose theatre career has included work on and off Broadway.

For *Affluenza*, Sandberg is joined by set designer Charlie Corcoran, costume designer Hannah Schmidt, lighting designer Jack Weir, and sound designer Emily Drohan.

The production takes inspiration from a real legal case in which extreme privilege became part of the larger public conversation surrounding culpability and responsibility. Rather than merely retelling those events, the play uses the premise to ask its audience broad questions about generational wealth.

*Affluenza* promises to be a thought-provoking night of theatre, leaving audiences asking themselves important questions long after the curtain closes.

## What to watch for

- Andy Sandberg won a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical for his work on *Hair* (2009).
- Rupert Young was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2020 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical.
- Set designer Charlie Corcoran won a Henry Hewes Design Award for his scenic design of *The O’Casey Trilogy* at Irish Repertory Theatre.
- Andy Sandberg became one of the youngest Tony Award-winning producers when he won at age 25.

Don’t miss *Affluenza*, Andy Sandberg’s darkly witty new play about the consequences of privilege and the weight of accountability at Riverside Studios.

See *Affluenza*, Andy Sandberg’s dark comedic play exploring themes of wealth and the consequences of immense privilege at Riverside Studios. Book *Affluenza* tickets on London Theatre.

Set within the extreme wealth of the Hamptons, *Affluenza* is a play that begins after a teenager’s drunken car ride ends in devastation. As the repercussions of the event move into the courtroom, an extraordinary question is asked. Can a person who has grown up with so much privilege truly understand the difference between right and wrong?

This play is inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defence as it examines what happens when wealth and personal responsibility coincide. As the consequences of the accident extend beyond the night it occurred, *Affluenza* takes a hard look at who exactly bears the responsibility for the choices people make, and how ideas of money and entitlement are passed from one generation to the next.

The company includes Noah Schnapp (in his stage debut), Janette Manrara, Juliet Cowan, Wallis Currie-Wood, Rupert Young, and Donald Sage Mackay.

Andy Sandberg writes and directs the world premiere. The creative team includes set designer Charlie Corcoran, costume designer Hannah Schmidt, lighting designer Jack Weir, and sound designer Emily Drohan.

*Affluenza* in London launches Riverside Studios’ Mainstage Season 26/27, a programme of new plays exploring contemporary concepts. Balancing dark humour with difficult topics of justice and morality, *Affluenza* examines the system surrounding one privileged family. What happens when your money can protect you from the consequences of your own actions, even if those actions irreparably harm others?

Rather than offering easy answers to hard questions, this production encourages its audience to consider how deeply our privileges can shape our understanding of the world around us. By placing a family’s private choices against a larger systemic issue, the play turns one devastation into an examination of responsibility.
