Robert Icke is returning to *Romeo & Juliet* with this new staging that will reunite him with one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, now staged for a limited season in the West End. Known for his deeply intelligent work on classic texts, Icke brings a signature intensity to a production that is not merely about young love but also about the fragility of life and the pain caused by schism.

This production marks a major stage achievement for its two leads. Sadie Sink, who is known to many audiences from *Stranger Things*, as well as Broadway, takes on the role of Juliet, while Noah Hupe makes his stage debut as Romeo. Joined by this incredible cast is a strong creative team, including designer Hildegard Bechtler, lighting designer Jon Clark, and sound designer Tom Gibbons. *Romeo & Juliet* is a play that promises audiences a heartbreakingly beautiful night of theatre.

## What to watch for

- Although Romeo’s age is never explicitly stated, we know Juliet to be only 13 years old when she meets her love.
- *Romeo & Juliet* was written between 1591 and 1596, but women were not allowed on stage until much later. It was Mary Saunderson who became the first woman to play Juliet on stage in 1662.
- It is unlikely that Romeo and Juliet were real people; however, there were two families called Montecchi and Capuleti, who were likely Shakespeare’s inspiration for Capulet and Montague.
- *Romeo & Juliet* is the inspiration for the children’s film *Gnomeo and Juliet* (2011).

Don’t miss Shakespeare’s *Romeo & Juliet* directed by Robert Icke and starring Sadie Sink and Noah Jupe in this brilliant new West End revival.

Step into the world of Shakespeare with his most famous play, *Romeo & Juliet*, directed by Robert Icke in this intimate, charged revival starring Sadie Sink (*Stranger Things*) and Noah Jupe (*A Quiet Place*) in their West End debuts. Book *Romeo & Juliet* tickets on London Theatre.

*Romeo & Juliet* is a play set in Verona at the height of summer, where two young people meet at a party and fall into a love that is equal parts thrilling and all-consuming — a love that feels impossible to resist. But between them lies a tense history of warring families, violence, and political hostility that will prevent them from loving each other freely. What begins as a story of innocent young love quickly spirals into a tragedy shaped not only by its passion but also by the failures of those around them.

This reimagining is directed by Robert Icke, whose work is known for its intensity and its striking understanding of how to bring a contemporary edge to a beloved classic text. Icke returns to Romeo & Juliet after his earlier production of the play, staging Shakespeare’s most riveting love story with a set of fresh eyes at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

*Romeo & Juliet* in London stars Sadie Sink as Juliet and Noah Jupe as Romeo, joined by Jamie Ankrah, Dylan Corbett-Bader, Eden Epstein, Alex Felton, Clark Gregg, Ada Grey, Kasper Hilton-Hillie, Aruna Jalloh, John Marquez, Caroline Moroney, Clare Perkins, David Shelley, Lewis Shepherd, and Alexander Uzoka. The creative team also includes design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting by Jon Clark, and sound by Tom Gibbons.

Heartbreaking and always timeless, *Romeo & Juliet* remains one of Shakespeare’s most devastating yet beloved plays, and this revival promises to make its passion feel poignant all over again.

The Harold Pinter Theatre, established and adorned with Victorian architecture in 1881, is one of the most notable theatre venues in the heart of London. Originally known as the Royal Comedy Theatre, it later adopted the name of 'Harold Pinter', honouring the famous playwright. The theatre is situated conveniently in the centre of the bustling West End, an ideal location for tourists and locals alike. The interior is decorated with an impressive array of original features aligned with its historical era of inception, creating an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for theatre-goers. The theatre has an audience capacity of 796 people across four levels, with the seats divided into Stalls, Dress Circle, Royal Circle and Balcony. Over time, it has been home to many outstanding performances, including shows like 'The Homecoming', 'Moonlight', and 'Betrayal'. The Harold Pinter Theatre undoubtedly offers a memorable and culturally enriching experience for all those who visit.

The Harold Pinter Theatre opened on 15 Oct. 1881 as a comic opera house. Its name on opening was the Royal Comedy Theatre, though its ‘Royal’ epithet was dropped in 1884.

The Comedy Theatre helped establish the New Watergate Club in 1956, a society which helped overturn the stage censorship enforced by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office. The formation of the Club meant that the plays banned by the Government could be performed at this venue as it was now being run as a private club rather than a commercial entity. Notable plays in this category include Arthur Miller’s *A View from the Bridge* and Tennessee Williams’ *Cat On A Hot Tin Roof*. The censorship was finally overturned in 1968.

Harold Pinter's works were often performed here: *The Homecoming*, *The Caretaker*, *Moonlight*, *No-Man’s Land* and *The Hothouse* all enjoyed successful runs, and Pinter directed a production of *The Old Masters* here in 2004. After his death, it was thought fitting to bestow the honour of naming a theatre after him, and the name was officially changed on 13 Oct. 2011 to the Harold Pinter Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre Group own the Harold Pinter Theatre.

## Harold Pinter Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels – Stalls, Dress Circle, Royal Circle and Balcony. The top three levels are a horseshoe shape around the stalls.

The Stalls is a single block of seats, and offers good sightlines. Some seats are impaired by supportive pillars and the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle doesn’t offer a great raking in the seating, but the view is not affected by the overhang of the Royal Circle.

The Royal Circle seats curve towards the stage more noticeably than the Dress Circle.

The Balcony feels very high in this theatre.
