In *The Book of Mormon* musical, Kevin Price is raring to go on a two-year mission to Orlando, Florida. But he’s shocked to be paired with the less-than-popular Arnold Cunningham and instead sent to Uganda, where no missionary has successfully converted anyone. Price is determined to do what no Mormon has done before, but Cunningham connects with the locals best once he starts “Making Things Up Again” on his own.

Technically, you could say the history of *The Book of Mormon* goes back to 1830, when the Mormon Church was founded. The musical is a little newer. Parker and Stone started working with Lopez in 2003 after seeing his Tony-winning Best Musical *Avenue Q*. The *South Park* duo wanted to make a *Book of Mormon* movie, but Lopez insisted on making a musical.

The show’s first reading was in 2008, and an Off-Broadway world premiere was set for 2010. The producers canceled that production to give the creators more time to refine the show. Premiering *The Book of Mormon* on Broadway directly was a leap of faith — and it paid off.

*The Book of Mormon* got 14 Tony nominations and won for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Direction of a Musical, and more. The show also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and the London and Melbourne productions won Best Musical at the Olivier and Helpmann Award ceremonies, respectively.

## What to watch for

- At one point in developing *The Book of Mormon* on Broadway, the writers thought about killing off Elder Price at the end of Act 1. However, that idea was quickly scrapped, as killing off the lead character wouldn't work in a musical comedy.
- Robert Lopez, who wrote the music and lyrics, is the youngest EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner in history. Robert Lopez received his second Tony for Best Score for *The Book of Mormon*, and at age 36, he won his fourth for Best Original Song for “Let It Go” from *Frozen*. He also became a double EGOT when he won his second Oscar for "Remember Me" from the Disney film *Coco*.
- Parker, Stone, and Lopez took a trip to Salt Lake City and spoke with real Mormon missionaries as research for the musical. They definitely said "Hello!"
- The song “All-American Prophet” used to be called “The Bible is a Trilogy." The original title is referenced in Elder Cunningham’s line “Wow, so the Bible is actually a trilogy, and the Book of Mormon is *Return of the Jedi*.”
- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took out advertisements in the program with taglines like “You’ve seen the show, now read the book” and “The book is always better.”

In *The Book of Mormon*, Elder Cunningham and Elder Price — absolute opposites who don’t start off as the best of friends — can’t wait to start their mission. Dreaming to head to Orlando, they are instead assigned to Uganda. A spoof on the wild rules of religion and a masterful execution of the buddy comedy, *The Book of Mormon* lets no one off the hook in its satirical look at faith, friendship, and some other choice F-words. With a dirty mouth and a dearer soul, the musical is meant for adults, even if it has a childlike sense of wonder.

## What is the *Book of Mormon* musical about?

*The Book of Mormon* is a musical about Elders Price and Cunningham, two Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda to convert the locals. (It's a far cry from Orlando, Florida, where Elder Price hoped to be sent.) Poverty, injustice, and an oppressive warlord made the villagers lose faith in God long ago — but the elders are determined to succeed, even if it means bending the teachings of the holy book a little.

The Book of Mormon premiered directly on Broadway, unlike most musicals that play off Broadway or in a different city first. But the outrageous musical comedy immediately took Broadway and the rest of the world by storm when it opened at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in 2011. The New York Times hailed The Book of Mormon on Broadway as "the best musical of the century." The show went on to collect nine Tony Awards that year, including Best Musical. Original cast members Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad (Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, respectively) became instant Broadway favorites, and Nikki M. James picked up a Tony for starring as Nabulungi.

The musical's score is best known for its the signature introduction number, "Hello," where the Mormons greet the audience. Other fan favorites include the outrageous and infectious lament "Hasa Diga Eebowai," the show-stopping "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream," the smooth "Baptize Me," and the comedy anthem "I Believe."

The The Book of Mormon is known for its raunchy, irreverent humor, which is par for the course for its creators. Trey Parker and Matt Stone are best known for writing the adult animated TV show South Park, and Robert Lopez co-created the adult puppet musical Avenue Q. Lopez is also notable for being the youngest person in history to achieve EGOT status and the only person to win all four requisite awards — an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony — more than once. In fact, he is one Oscar away from a triple EGOT.

The Book of Mormon features choreography and co-direction (alongside Parker) by Casey Nicholaw, known for helming other musical comedies including Something Rotten, The Producers, and The Prom.

One of the funniest musicals on Broadway, *The Book of Mormon* is a modern classic. A filthy satire with a pure heart, *The Book of Mormon* followstwo Mormons as they begin their long-awaited mission — but converting a Ugandan village proves no easy task. The raunchy, irreverent worldwide hit comes from the creators of the equally outlandish TV show *South Park* and musical *Avenue Q*. Winning nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, the show has been a hit since it opened on Broadway in 2011. Get *The Book of Mormon* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Eugene O’Neill Theatre

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp for the Shubert brothers, the Eugene O'Neill Theatre originally opened as the Forrest — named after 19th-century tragedian Edwin Forrest — on November 25, 1925 with a production of the musical *Mayflowers*. A subsequent production there, 1933's *Tobacco Road*, once held the record as the longest running Broadway show in history.

In 1945, the theatre closed and, after extensive alterations, reopened as the Coronet. Under the ownership of Lester Osterman, the venue changed its name in 1959 to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in honor of the American playwright. Playwright Neil Simon took ownership of the theatre after Osterman, but he later sold it to Jujamcyn Theatres in 1982.

Suffs on Broadway - Square

Most people have heard of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but they're far from the only influential suffragists. In fact, the main characters of *Suffs* — including Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, and Inez Milholland — often clash with Anthony's generation of older suffragists who don't believe in disruptive protests as a means of activism. Paul and co. triumphed, but the musical also sheds light on their imperfections, too — namely, how the white leaders often pushed activists of color to the sidelines. Indeed, the Nineteenth Amendment only applied to white women.

*Suffs* premiered at The Public Theater in spring 2022 with a cast including Jenn Colella, Nikki M. James, Phillipa Soo, and Taub herself.

## What to watch for

- The entire lead creative team (Taub, director Leigh Silverman, and choreographer Mayte Natalio) and head producing team of *Suffs* are women. Joining lead producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman are Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai!
- Feeling deja vu? Another historical musical, *Hamilton*, got its start at the Public back in 2015. Like *Suffs*, one person (Lin-Manuel Miranda) wrote the entirety of *Hamilton* and played the starring role.
- Taub was the 2014 recipient of the Jonathan Larson Award. More recently, she collaborated with Elton John on the score for the new *Devil Wears Prada* musical adaptation!
- Phillipa Soo knows her way around a historical role — she earned a Tony nomination for playing Eliza Hamilton in *Hamilton*.
- Natalio is doubly represented on Broadway in the 2023-24 season. A few months before *Suffs* opened, she made her Broadway debut with another new musical, *How to Dance in Ohio*.
- In 2020, The New York Times profiled the *Suffs* team for the documentary series *Offstage*. The documentary series highlighted the impact of Covid-19 on theatremaking in 2020.
