Spring 1747, Potsdam, Prussia. Johann Sebastian Bach reluctantly visits the court of Frederick II, Europe’s most ambitious and dangerous leader. The two men could hardly be more different. Bach is deeply religious, Frederick is an atheist. Bach loathes war, Frederick revels in it. Bach studies scripture, Frederick reads military history. Frederick remains in awe of Bach’s genius however and has mischievously prepared a musical conundrum that he hopes will baffle the composer and amuse his court. The explosive events of the following days could not have been predicted by either man.

*The Score* is a play by Oliver Cotton, who has written for television and film in addition to his work in the theatre. He is known for the Netflix mini-series *The English Game* and *Wet Weather Cover* for King's Head Theatre.

*The Score* in London boasts an exceptional creative team led by director Sir Trevor Nunn (*Fiddler on the Roof*). Set and costume design is by Robert Jones (*The Unfriend*), lighting design is by Johanna Town (*The Habit of Art*), the composer and sound designer is Sophie Cotton (*Winner's Curse*), and casting is by Ginny Schiller CDG.

The set design truly sets the play apart. As the 4-star [Daily Mail review](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12650905/Marmion-Score-Logan-Roy-Bach.html) said, "The staging impresses, too, thanks to Robert Jones's design featuring a pretty collection of harpsichords, as well as a series of backdrops displaying Imperial portraits and a huge pastoral tapestry."

## What to watch for

- In addition to being a playwright, Oliver Cotton is also an actor, and he has held leading roles in numerous productions, including *Much Ado in About Nothing* and *As You Like It*.
- Director Sir Trevor Nunn was named by The Telegraph as one of the most influential people in British culture in 2008.
- This isn’t the first play about a composer; among many is the 1925 show *Mozart* by Sacha Guitry and Peter Shaffer’s 1979 play *Amadeus*.
- Brian Cox is a decorated actor who has earned numerous awards, including two Olivier Awards, an Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

In *The Score*, be transported to Potsdam, Prussia in the spring of 1747 when one of Europe's most tyrannical leaders summons one of the world's greatest composers. Book *The Score* tickets on London Theatre.

*The Score* is a play that stars multi-award-winning actor Brian Cox (*Succession*) as Johann Sebastian Bach, and Cox's wife Nicole Ansari-Cox (*Deadwood*) stars as Bach's wife Anna. They tell the story of Johann Sebastian Bach being summoned by Frederick II. The men are vastly different, with Frederick being an atheist who enjoys war while Bach is profoundly religious and is against war. Frederick presents Bach with a musical challenge that leads to the unexpected.

*The Score* in London was first staged at Theatre Royal Bath in 2023. This staging was Cox's first time returning to the stage since 2006, and the production was met with rave reviews. The 4-star [The Telegraph review](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/theatre/what-to-see/the-score-theatre-royal-bath-review-brian-cox/) said, "Brian Cox is magnificent as he returns to the stage."

The play is written by Oliver Cotton, known for his work writing for theatre as well as television and film, including the Netflix mini-series *The English Game* and *Wet Weather Cover* for King's Head Theatre. The show boasts an exceptional creative team, including decorated director Sir Trevor Nunn (*Fiddler on the Roof*), set and costume designer Robert Jones (*The Unfriend*), lighting designer Johanna Town (*The Habit of Art*), composer and sound designer Sophie Cotton (*Winner's Curse*), and casting by Ginny Schiller CDG.

As the [Daily Mail's 4-star review](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12650905/Marmion-Score-Logan-Roy-Bach.html) said of the Theatre Royal Bath production, "The staging impresses, too, thanks to Robert Jones's design featuring a pretty collection of harpsichords, as well as a series of backdrops displaying Imperial portraits, and a huge pastoral tapestry."

Following its successful run at Theatre Royal Bath, *The Score*, a tale about Johann Sebastian Bach and Frederick II, comes to Theatre Royal Haymarket starring multi-award-winning actor Brian Cox (*Succession*).

Born in 1946 in Dundee, Brian Cox is a two-time Olivier Award-winning actor. Cox will play Johann Sebastian Bach in *The Score* in the West End this year. He recently starred as James Tyrone in a West End revival of Eugene O’Neill’s *Long Day’s Journey Into Night*.

Growing up, Cox showed a keen interest in the arts, and eventually joined Dundee Repertory Theatre as a teenager — Alan Cumming and Joanna Lumley are also Dundee Rep alumni. Cox later auditioned for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 1965.

He made his West End debut in 1967, playing Orlando in Shakespeare’s *As You Like It* at the Vaudeville Theatre. Following this, Cox started a long relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre: shows include *Julius Caesar, Herod, The Putney Debates* and *The Taming of the Shrew*.

In the 1980s, Cox won two acting Olivier Awards for *Rat in the Skull* (1984) and *Titus Andronicus* (1988). For both those years, Cox was up against his own performance in the same category; he received a further two nominations for *Misalliance* (1984), and *Fashion* (1988).

In recent years, Cox’s West End credits include *Rock ‘n’ Roll* at the Royal Court Theatre, and *The Weir* at the Donmar Warehouse. In a [four-star review of *The Weir*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/the-weir-2014), our critic said: “Cox has a crumpled authority that is spellbinding to watch. They are a beautiful ensemble in a beautiful, bracing play. It is a slow-burner of an evening, but it produces a lasting flame.”

Cox is a regular on the Broadway stage too. He made his Broadway debut in a 1985 revival of Eugene O’Neill’s *Strange Interlude*. He’s also played the Coach in *That Championship Season,* and Lyndon B. Johnson in the 2019 play, *The Great Society.*

As well as a busy career on stage, Cox’s television and film career is similarly lengthy. Cox’s notable credits include *Manhunter, Braveheart, The Bourne Identity, Troy, Zodiac, Rise of the Planet of the Apes*, and *Churchill*. He’s also played Hermann Göring in *Nuremberg* to Emmy-winning acclaim, and also stars as Logan Roy in *Succession*.

## Theatre Royal Haymarket Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Upper Circle and Gallery.

The seating in the Stalls is very good, particularly as the overhang of the Dress Circle only really affects the view from Row V onwards.

The Royal Circle offers an excellent view of the stage – the overhang of the Upper Circle doesn’t affect the view from any seat.

Seats in the Upper Circle curve towards the stage at the sides, and do not offer great legroom but views are pretty good for the price on offer.

The Gallery feels far from the stage.
