*The Fantasticks* is an enduring masterpiece by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Thanks to its minimalist but imaginative staging with a few actors, intimate design, and smaller orchestra, the musical has been done all over the world. The play had a decades-long run off Broadway before being revived there as well, but for the first time this story of young love, separation, and reunion is making its way to Broadway.

Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (*[Schmigadoon!](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/45429-schmigadoon-on-broadway), Newsies*) directs this revival, which features a revised book and lyrics by Jones himself. Performances begin in October 2026 as part of Second Stage's 48th annual season; the theatre is known for giving works a "second stage" to highlight previously successful productions.

“Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception," said Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet in a statement.

## What to watch for
- Second Stage's season also features the Pulitzer finalist *[Gloria](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/47144-gloria)* by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
- Tom Jones (revised book and lyrics) and Harvey Schmidt (music) met at the University of Texas at Austin and later wrote *The Fantasticks* for a summer theatre production at Barnard College.
- The musical is loosely based on the 1894 play *Les Romanesques* by Edmond Rostand.
- Songs from the show include "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," and "They Were You."

The Fantasticks - NYC - Todaytix

See the long-awaited Broadway bow of this musical masterpiece. The world's longest-running musical thanks to its 42-year run off Broadway, *The Fantasticks* features beloved songs like "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain," "Much More," "Metaphor," and "They Were You." Directed by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (*[Schmigadoon!](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/45429-schmigadoon-on-broadway), Newsies*) in a new production, *The Fantasticks* on Broadway offers an update to the original story: instead of featuring two fathers, a son, and daughter, this revival features two mothers and their gay sons who fall in love despite the divisions between them.

Tom Jones (providing the revised book and lyrics) and Harvey Schmidt (the musical's composer) first met in college before going on to write this show that is loosely based on the 1894 play *Les Romanesques* by Edmond Rostand. It has played all over the world thanks to its simple conceit, staging, and orchestra, all of which uplift the charm of this musical jewel.

In *The Fantasticks* the musical, two families are neighbors separated by a wall. The mothers in each household pretend to start a feud in order to, through reverse psychology, get their young sons to fall in love. What follows is a simple, sweet, and beautiful story of first love, separation, and happy reunion.

“Second Stage Theater has always been the premiere home for contemporary works by both emerging writers and established masters, and this upcoming season is no exception," said Second Stage Artistic Director Evan Cabnet in a statement. Second Stage produces the musical, truly making it a special revival with the updated take on the classic show. The musical begins performances in October 2026, staged at the Helen Hayes Theater in Midtown Manhattan.

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

*& Juliet* had a hit-making 2019 world premiere in London, receiving nine Olivier Award nominations, including Best New Musical, and a record-breaking 13 nominations at the WhatsOnStage Awards there. Once the show came stateside, it earned nine 2023 Tony Award nominations, including for Best Musical.

*& Juliet* is a pop musical for multiple generations. A total of 30 Max Martin songs are in the show, from the ‘90s through today. From Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi, and early Britney Spears hits; to early-2000s bops from Katy Perry, Kesha, and P!nk; to 2010s chart-toppers from Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, there are songs everyone has on repeat on their Spotify playlists.

## What to watch for

- One of the songs in *& Juliet*, "One More Try," is a new song Martin and Jessie J wrote specifically for the show.
- Proper Elizabethan meets pop extravaganza in the details of *& Juliet* on Broadway. Elements like the costumes are inspired by Shakespeare’s era, but the choreography emulates the moves you’d see in your favorite pop stars’ music videos.
- In addition to his five Grammys, Martin has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award 11 times (including every year from 2011-2018), and he's an Oscar and two-time Golden Globe nominee.
- *& Juliet* is perfect for fans of Tony-winning shows like *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* and *Hell's Kitchen*, which work beloved songs into an original, larger-than-life story, and *Six*, a pop-powered hit that puts women's stories center stage.

Jukebox musicals often focus on the discography of a single artist, but in *& Juliet,* audiences get to hear tunes from the Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Robyn, Bon Jovi, and other iconic singers. Together, they fuel Juliet’s coming-of-age story with high-fever energy with plenty of laughs and romance along the way. The Olivier Award-winning production transferred to Broadway in 2022 and has been wowing audiences since with its thrilling design, beloved pop hits, and revisited story that reinvents the character you thought you knew.

## What to watch for

- Max Martin, a pop hitmaker, wrote and/or produced all 30 songs in the show, including a new one he wrote for *& Juliet* with Jessie J: “One More Try.”
- Audiences can expect design that combines elements of Elizabethan England with pop diva and runway looks, blending the classical with the contemporary.
- In addition to his five Grammys, Martin has won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award 11 times (including every year from 2011-2018), and he's an Oscar and two-time Golden Globe nominee.
- Throughout the show, the character of Shakespeare makes various references to words he invented and other plays he wrote.

She's stronger than yesterday! The nine-time Tony Award-nominated pop musical & Juliet is going strong as one of the biggest hits on Broadway. Get & Juliet tickets now.

*& Juliet* on Broadway takes modern pop songs from the catalog of Max Martin and sets them to an original story about what might happen if Juliet did not die at the end of Romeo & Juliet. Before you go, discover more about what to expect from this energetic, larger-than-life pop extravaganza.

What is & Juliet about?

The & Juliet musical kicks off nearly where Romeo & Juliet left off: right before Juliet's death. This isn't a retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy, though; it's a whole new story in which Juliet decides losing Romeo doesn't mean she should die. Instead, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to Paris. Accompanied by her friends — which include some characters from the original play, like the nurse, as well as new characters, like her friends Francois and May — she goes to parties, makes new friends, falls in love (again), and sees what the world has to offer beyond the stifling walls of Verona.

The whole story is narrated by Shakespeare and his wife, Anne Hathaway, who are actually writing the story as they go along. Anne learns of Shakespeare's original Romeo & Juliet ending and dislikes it, so she takes over. With Anne at the helm, Juliet gets more agency and depth independent of her relationship with Romeo, and a more positive lease on life. Anne even writes herself and Shakespeare in as characters, and debating their different ideas for the story ends up helping them work out the issues in their marriage.

The *& Juliet* Broadway musical is full of energy and laughs, as the & Juliet book is by David West Read, a writer on the Emmy Award-winning Schitt's Creek.

Originally called the Henry Miller's Theatre, the venue opened on April 1, 1918 with *The Fountain of Youth* - a translation of *Flor de la vida* by the Alvarez Quintero brothers.

In 1969, the venue became a cinema and then a nightclub; it reverted back to a theatre in 1998. The theatre closed in 2004 due to the Bank of America Tower construction at One Bryant Park.

The theatre was rebuilt — with the original facade preserved and restored — and reopened in September 2009. The venue was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre at a special ceremony on September 15, 2010 in honor of the award-winning composer's 80th birthday.

When a theatre in London's West End was named for Sondheim in 2019, he became the only then-living person to have eponymous theatres in both New York and London.
