Variety said *Galileo* gives its star, the vocal powerhouse Raúl Esparza, "show-stopping" songs. Amanda Lipitz, Henry Tisch, and Jordan Roth are producing this new show. “The moment Galileo lifts his telescope to the sky and reshapes our understanding of the universe is one of history’s great turning points," the producing team said in a joint statement.

They also added, "Bringing that moment to the stage feels both thrilling and urgent. Though this story unfolds more than 400 years ago, its themes resonate with striking clarity today. We’re telling a story that captures the enduring tension between truth and power — and the courage required to stand by what you know is right, even when doing so comes at great cost. That kind of courage is the essential force on which human progress relies, and it is why Galileo — and those like him — are the ones who change the course of history.”

## What to watch for
- Raúl Esparza is known for his leading man roles in musicals like *Company, Leap of Faith, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang*, and more.
- Broadway stalwart Jeremy Kushnier (*Head Over Heels*) and rising star Joy Woods (*Gypsy*, Tony nominee) co-star alongside Esparza.
- David Neumann, a Tony nominee for *[Hadestown](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/14748-hadestown)*, is the choreographer of this new musical.
- Variety called the musical "assertive" with "’80s-Style Power Ballads."

See this gorgeous and stellar new musical starring four-time Tony Award nominee Raúl Esparza. *Galileo* the musical comes to New York after its acclaimed run at Berkeley Rep in California, where the San Francisco Chronicle wrote that "Esparza has so much vocal power that, in a beat of silence after he sings, an echo has its own beginning, middle and end."

The musical brings together a powerhouse team. Directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer and co-starring Tony nominee Joy Woods and Jeremy Kushnier, *Galileo* on Broadway examines the fraught period in which famed scientist Galileo Galilei argued that his celestial observations go against the church's teachings, ushering in a new way of seeing the world and its place in the universe.

Charged with a rock score and sweeping in its storytelling and sumptuous design, Galileo may be an ancient figure, but this musical is for today's audiences.

The musical is produced by Amanda Lipitz, Henry Tisch, and Jordan Roth. In a joint statement, they said, “The moment Galileo lifts his telescope to the sky and reshapes our understanding of the universe is one of history’s great turning points."

It’s no secret that Idina Menzel is one of Broadway’s most sought-after performers. World famous for providing the voice of Elsa in *Frozen* and originating the role of Elphaba in *[Wicked](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/1-wicked)*, winning her Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, Menzel is a fierce but vulnerable performer, channeling great emotion and yearning in her vocals without sacrificing strength.

Menzel made a name for herself originating the role of Maureen in *Rent*. That, and her turn in *Wicked*, garnered her greater fame. Hopping back and forth between TV (*Glee*) and film (*Enchanted*), she was also known to return to the stage, as she did in *If/Then*. Now, she’s back on Broadway after years away taking part in another original musical.

In *Redwood*, she once again portrays a forceful but searching character. A musical refreshing in its originality, wit, and heart, *Redwood* promises to be an unforgettable journey complete with an awe-inspiring design and first-class musical theatre talent.

## What to watch for

- Director Tina Landau, a Tony nominee for *SpongeBob SquarePants*, is known for creating immersive worlds in her musicals, and *Redwood* will be no different with its celebrated, woodsy design.
- Tina Landau and Idina Menzel scouted composer and co-lyricists Kate Diaz online when searching for an artist outside of the musical theatre genre. Per Diaz’s website, Menzel describes Kate’s score as “epic and cinematic as well as intimate well-crafted songwriting.”
- The La Jolla Playhouse production of *Redwood* sold out its run and was met with critical acclaim; Forbes wrote that the “score is perfection.”
- The set for this production is quite ravishing — designer Jason Ardizzone-West is an acclaimed artist with a Drama Desk nomination and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special for *Jesus Christ Superstar Live*.

Idina Menzel is back: get *Redwood* tickets to see the Tony winner return to Broadway. *Redwood* the musical “feels like the American musical of tomorrow,” wrote the San Diego Union-Tribune.

International superstar Idina Menzel is back on stage: Get *Redwood* tickets to see the Tony Award winner star in this stirring, enlightening new musical. From acclaimed writer and director Tina Landau, with contemporary songs from newcomer Kate Diaz, whose “score is perfection” (Forbes), *Redwood* is a fully original work and a refreshing musical about the journeys we take to redefine our lives.

Prepare to be transported to a Northern California forest: experience *Redwood* on Broadway and travel with Jesse (Menzel) on a life-changing adventure. Jesse seems to have it all — a loving family, a successful career — until an unexpected turn of events takes her far, far away from familiarity and comfort. She finds herself at the foot of the great redwoods of Northern California, where a spectacular journey awaits, taking her out of her comfort zone. A chance encounter and leap of faith will forever alter her life path — but is Jesse ready to start anew? *Redwood* explores with gorgeous, pointed perspective the lengths, and heights, we travel to find strength, resolve, and self-care.

Menzel is a theatre superstar, having originated award-winning roles in *Rent* and *[Wicked](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets)*. More recently, she has dabbled in TV and film, appearing in everything from *Glee* and Netflix movies to the *Frozen* franchise. Landau, known for her playful work on SpongeBob SquarePants, directs this highly anticipated new show.

Of the sold-out West Coast run, Forbes said, “This is the show for the era in which we live… I’ve seen the future of Broadway musicals and its name is *Redwood*.” Get tickets now!

See *Redwood* the musical on Broadway starring Idina Menzel. A new musical, *Redwood* in New York is “visually stunning and immersive” (San Diego Magazine).

Born on May 30, 1971 in New York City, Idina Menzel is one of the most recognizable Broadway actresses of her generation, having originated roles in Rent and Wicked. In 2021, she appeared as part of the Rent 25th anniversary gala held by New York Theatre Workshop.

Growing up in New York, Menzel was introduced to Broadway from an early age. As a teenager, she would sing at events, continuing this while studying at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Graduating with a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama, Menzel then began auditioning for productions — Rent was her professional debut. After being involved in workshop productions for Rent at New York Theatre Workshop, Menzel eventually made her Broadway debut with the show in 1996, originating the role of Maureen at the Nederlander Theatre. For her performance, she was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 1996 Tony Awards and continued in the role for over a year. Menzel was then cast as Kate in The Wild Party and later took over the role of Amneris in Aida.

2003 was a life-changing year for Menzel, as she originated the role of Elphaba in Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre. Starring alongside Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, she eventually won her first Tony Award, but missed out on her final scheduled performance after cracking a rib. Nonetheless, audiences can hear Menzel in the original Wicked Broadway cast recording.

When Wicked transferred to London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre in 2006, Menzel went with the show. Reprising her performance as Elphaba for three months, her Wicked return also marked her West End debut, subsequently followed by an appearance in a Chess concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

In 2014, Menzel returned to Broadway, starring alongside Rent cast member Anthony Rapp in If/Then at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. She played Elizabeth for the musical’s entire Broadway run, later reprising the role on a national tour. More recently, she starred in Skintight at the Laura Pels Theatre in 2018 and in Redwood on Broadway in 2025.

Aside from Broadway, Menzel is perhaps best known for providing the voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen and Frozen II. She has also played Nancy in the movie musical Enchanted and the 2022 sequel Disenchanted; Vivian, Cinderella's stepmother, in the 2021 movie musical adaptation of Cinderella; and Dinah Ratner in Uncut Gems. She can also be seen in Glee playing Shelby Corcoran.
