Playwright Matthew Lombardo is known for his works that celebrate strong female characters, but he's also not afraid to show their thorns, flaws, and biting humor. That was the case in two of his Broadway works, *High* starring Kathleen Turner and *Looped,* which featured Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance, and it's certaintly what he is offering here. However, unlike in those other fictional pieces created or based on others' lives, here he infuses *Conversations with Mother* with a more personal, intimate bent: the play is semi-autobiographical and takes a page from his own upbringing as a gay son in an Italian household.

Matt Doyle has already played a gay, neurotic character to great acclaim as seen in *Company*, where he stole the show singing "Not Getting Married Today." Caroline Aaron is another actor tailor-made for this role given the powerful people she's played in *Sleepless in Seattle* and *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*.

## What to watch for

- Matt Doyle is a Broadway alum known for his roles in *Bye Bye Birdie, Spring Awakening, War Horse,* and more.
- Caroline Aaron has a storied film career, having appeared in multiple Mike Nichols, Nora Ephron, and Woody Allen films.
- Noah Himmelstein directs this new comedy and has had his work seen regionally and off Broadway.
- Off Broadway, Matthew Lombardo penned *Who's Holiday*, the irreverent comedy with Lesli Margherita as an adult Cindy Lou Who at the Westside Theatre (Lucille Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Show).

Conversations With Mother - NYC - Todaytix

*Conversations with Friends* follows a mother-son duo as they explore the complexities of their relationship. There's the domineering mother (SAG winner Caroline Aaron), the aimless gay son (Tony winner Matt Doyle), and plenty of laughs between the two.

Get *Conversations with Mother* tickets and see this new comedy starring Caroline Aaron (*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*) and Matt Doyle (*Company*). Conversations with Mother plays for a strictly limited engagement this winter and spring at Theatre 555 on 42nd Street. A hilarious look at a mother-son relationship, this two hander will be relatable to anyone who’s ever struggled with while eternally loving their parent or child.

Experience *Conversations with Mother* off Broadway and see the newest play from Matthew Lombardo (*Looped, Tea at Five*). Lombardo’s Broadway credits include *High* starring Kathleen Turner and *Looped* which featured Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance. Known for writing vehicles for strong female characters, he now pens *Conversations with Mother*: a semi-autobiographical play and an ode to his own relationship with his mother…which if not always easy was certainly always hysterical.

Heartwarming and witty, *Conversations with Mother* traces the relationship between Italian matriarch Maria Collavechio (Aaron) and her gay son (Doyle). Spanning five decades, the play explores both characters as they test their lifelong bond. Showcasing a domineering Italian mamma and an aimless gay son, as Lombardo knows, can lead to some big laughs.

Noah Himmelstein directs this new comedy, which unites two stars of stage and screen. Aaron has appeared in multiple Mike Nichols, Nora Ephron, and Woody Allen films, and she is also known for her role in *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel* in which she plays a similar role, Joel’s overbearing mother.

Doyle is Broadway royalty and most recently was on the Great White Way winning a Tony and Drama Desk award for playing Jamie in *Company*. He’s also been seen on Broadway in *Bye Bye Birdie, Spring Awakening, War Horse*, and more.

Now, the two stars come together to play a mother and son duo for the ages. Tickets to *Conversations with Mother* in New York are available now.

We’ll be so glad to see you — but only through July 31! Marianne Elliott’s gender-bending revival of Stephen Sondheim’s musical is only on Broadway for a few more weeks, so catch it now that it's become the most awarded musical of the 2021-22 season with five Tonys. *Company* tickets are available on TodayTix. Get tickets for *Company* in New York today.

This *Company* revival features a woman in the central role of Bobbie, a 35-year-old singleton whose coupled friends want to pair her off on the occasion of her 35th birthday. Although *Company* is a quintessential New York musical, this production originated in London’s West End, featuring Patti LuPone in an Olivier Award-winning performance. Patti LuPone returns to her role as Joanne, who sings the epic 11 o’clock number “The Ladies Who Lunch,” in the Broadway production.

[__Jennifer Simard on the vulnerable experience of playing Sarah in ‘Company’ on Broadway__](https://www.todaytix.com/insider/nyc/posts/jennifer-simard-on-the-vulnerable-experience-of-playing-sarah-in-company-on-broadway)

[__The biggest changes made to 'Company' for the Broadway revival
__](https://www.todaytix.com/insider/nyc/posts/the-biggest-changes-to-the-broadway-revival-of-company)

In the *Company* musical, Bobbie explores a series of relationships with three suitors, while her friends continually encourage her to settle down. While the plot remains entirely the same with the lead’s gender switch, many critics and reporters have commented that by placing a woman in the center of the story and setting it in modern times, the urgency increases as biological clocks and societal pressure don’t hold the same weight for men.

*Company* originally premiered on Broadway in 1970, and the musical features several Sondheim standards including “Being Alive,” “Someone Is Waiting,” “Marry Me a Little,” and “Another Hundred People.” Actors including Adrian Lester, Raúl Esparza, Neil Patrick Harris, and more have played Bobby, and Rosalie Craig originated the female version of the role in London. *Company* Broadway tickets are available now.

## What to Watch For

- When Stephen Sondheim saw this production of Company in London, he told Rosalie Craig, who played Bobbie in the West End, “I wish I’d written it for a woman from the start.”
- This production of *Company* in New York marks the third Broadway revival of the show. The show was revived in 2006 and in 1995. The 2006 production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
- In 2011, The New York Philharmonic staged *Company* in a production starring Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Christina Hendricks, Martha Plimpton, and Patti LuPone as Joanne. The three-night run of performances was filmed and given a theatrical release and now is available to rent and stream.
- The *Documentary Now!* episode “Co-op” is a parody of the documentary about the making of the *Company* original cast recording. John Mulaney plays a Sondheim-esque character, while Paula Pell’s song “I’ve Got to Go” is an homage to Elaine Stritch and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” The episode is available to stream on Netflix, and the real documentary is available to stream on the Criterion Channel.
- Director Marianne Elliott and designer Bunny Christie were inspired by *Alice in Wonderland* for the production, and there are many visual cues to the iconic tale of a young woman finding herself in this *Company*.

Company returns to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Broadway. Book Company tickets in New York now.Following an acclaimed run at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End under the helm of two-time Tony Award-winning director Marianne Elliott, this production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's much-loved musical Company transfers to New York City. This new revival, which took home four out of its nine Olivier Award nominations in 2019 (including 'Best Musical Revival'), made headlines as the first gender-reversed production of Company to have been officially licensed by Stephen Sondheim. The leading male role of Bobby was changed to a leading female role named Bobbie, offering a fresh, new perspective on singledom, love and marriage. A handful of supporting characters were also gender-switched for the revival, including the inclusion of a gay couple by turning the role of Amy into Jamie. The revival also made waves over the pond due to the fact that Broadway legend and two-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone would finally return to a West End musical for the first time since 1993's Sunset Boulevard, ultimately winning an Olivier Award for her efforts. She reprised the role of Joanne (from the popular 2011 New York Philharmonic Concert) and she now reprises the role one more time for Broadway audiences at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.Joining Ms. LuPone is Katrina Lenk as leading lady Bobbie. Having wowed critics and audiences alike during the 2017 Broadway premiere of Paula Vogel's Indecent and scooping the Tony Award in 2018 for her stunning performance as Dina in The Band's Visit, Ms. Lenk is a shooting star of the New York stage and this gift of a monumental, gender-switched role is certainly in safe hands.Company began previews on Mar. 2, 2020, but was forced to close after nine performances. Company will now resume performances from Nov. 15, 2021, with an opening night on Dec. 9, 2021.Originally premiering on Broadway in 1970, winning six Tony Awards (including 'Best Musical'), this production of Company marks its fourth Broadway revival and perhaps the Sondheim classic has never felt more modern.Company is finally back where it belongs... on the Broadway stage! And we'll definitely drink to that!(Photo by Brinkhoff/Moegenburg)
