Joseph Papp founded The Public Theater in 1954 as the Shakespeare Workshop. The organization moved into its current home on Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan in 1967.

The Public Theater building was under risk of demolition until the Public persuaded the city council to sell them the building for use as a theatre. As a result, the building was granted New York City landmark status in 1965, and architect Giorgio Cavaglieri converted it into a theatre in 1967.

The company’s inaugural production in its new home was the world premiere of *Hair*, which also marked its first non-Shakespeare offering. The building is comprised of five performance spaces: the Anspacher Theater (which has a 275-seat capacity), LuEsther Hall (160 seats), Martinson Theater (199 seats), Newman Theater (299 seats), and Shiva Theater (99 seats).

The Public complex also include office spaces; the restaurant and bar The Library; and Joe’s Pub, a cabaret-style venue used for smaller musical revues and soloists. In *The Notebook* on Broadway, an elderly man reads a romantic story to a female patient in a nursing home. The chapters that follow unlock a breathtaking love story, whisking the patient and the man back to their youth and providing the details that, as they age, will tragically connect them. Decades earlier, Allie and Noah were star-crossed lovers: Military drafts, family ties, and opposing classes all threatened to separate their love, but they have a once-in-a-lifetime relationship that endures for decades.

Two Broadway powerhouses direct this new production, which premiered at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Michael Greif, a four-time Tony Award nominee for electric productions like *Rent* and *Next to Normal*, co-directs *The Notebook* musical alongside Schele Williams, who is directing the 2024 *The Wiz* revival. Also on the team is librettist Bekah Brunstetter, who earned three Emmy nominations writing for *This Is Us*. 

The show also earned strong press in Chicago. - Ingrid Michaelson returns to Broadway. The folksy, indie singer-songwriter has performed on Broadway before as Sonya in *Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812*. Now, she writes the score to her first Broadway musical.
- Michaelson is best known for writing the emotional songs featured on *Grey's Anatomy* — she feels handpicked to pen the score for this musical about the strangeness, thrills, and heartbreak of new and old love.
- Three actors each play Allie and Noah at different stages of their youth and adulthood. This is a popular casting structure in Broadway musicals, seen also in shows like *Fun Home* and *The Cher Show*.
- Michael Greif is staying booked and busy! Alongside *The Notebook*, he also directs *Days of Wine and Roses* and *Hell's Kitchen* in spring 2024.
- *The Notebook* marks Schele Williams's Broadway directing debut, but she's quickly following it up with the first revival of *The Wiz* later in 2024.

Designed by Herbert J. Krapp and built by the Shuberts in 1917, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre originally opened as the Plymouth Theatre in 1918. The theatre was leased to producer Arthur Hopkins, whose first production at the venue was the comedy *A Successful Calamity*, starring William Gillette and Estelle Winwood.

The Shuberts regained control of the theatre in 1948 after Hopkins passed away. The building became a designated New York landmark in 1987 and received its current name in 2005 to honor the late chairman of the Shubert Organization.

The theatre's architectural style is similar that of the Broadhurst Theatre on 44th Street, which directly abuts the Schoenfeld. Krapp designed both theatres, and they were built at the same time.
