Ethel Barrymore achieved stardom under the management of producer Charles Frohman. The Shuberts offered to build her a theatre and commission a play for her to premiere in her namesake house. The play, *The Kingdom of God*  opened on December 20, 1928. Other plays she performed there include *The Love Duel*, *Scarlet Sister Mary*, *The School for Scandal*, and *An International Incident*.

Pinter 7: A Slight Ache / The Dumb Waiter Tickets | Starring Danny Dyer | London, UK - London Theatre

“A Slight Ache” and “The Dumb Waiter,” though both quintessentially Pinter, are lighter fare compared to the playwright’s standard style of menace and dread. Martin Freeman of BBC’s “Sherlock” and “The Hobbit” stars alongside John Heffernan, and television’s Danny Dyer, who was also a personal friend of Pinter’s.

In “A Slight Ache,” a middle-aged married couple, Edward and Flora, appear to be having a typical, pleasant afternoon before a mysterious Matchseller arrives to disturb the evidently imperfect bliss.

The title of “The Dumb Waiter” is a surprisingly playful pun to go with the surprisingly playful Pinter play. The one-act centers on two hit men, both dumb and waiting for their orders to come through the literal dumbwaiter, though neither realize what they’re ultimately in for.

This exciting double bill of dark comedies are part of the Pinter at the Pinter series. The one-of-a-kind season is produced by the Jamie Lloyd Company over the course of a year to pay homage to the famed playwright on the tenth anniversary of his death.
## What to watch for
“A Slight Ache” was originally broadcast on the radio before it was produced onstage. The medium greatly changed the interpretation of the play because the entirely silent Matchseller character, who appears as a real figure in the play, seems to be a figment of Edward’s imagination on the radio.

As a young actor, Danny Dyer was mentored by Harold Pinter (who was a prolific actor in addition to being a playwright). On Pinter, Dyer told “The Guardian,” “He was the only person who I feared but loved… He was a fucking tyrant, too, you know, but he could get away with it because he was so enchanting. He was a poet.”

Although Martin Freeman is most known for his screen roles as Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster “Hobbit” trilogy and John Watson in the BBC series “Sherlock,” he also has a respected stage career. His credits include the titular role in “Richard III” at Trafalgar Studios and most recently, a starring role in last year’s “Labour of Love” in the West End.

The Harold Pinter Theatre opened on 15 Oct. 1881 as a comic opera house. Its name on opening was the Royal Comedy Theatre, though its ‘Royal’ epithet was dropped in 1884.

The Comedy Theatre helped establish the New Watergate Club in 1956, a society which helped overturn the stage censorship enforced by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office. The formation of the Club meant that the plays banned by the Government could be performed at this venue as it was now being run as a private club rather than a commercial entity. Notable plays in this category include Arthur Miller’s *A View from the Bridge* and Tennessee Williams’ *Cat On A Hot Tin Roof*. The censorship was finally overturned in 1968.

Harold Pinter's works were often performed here: *The Homecoming*, *The Caretaker*, *Moonlight*, *No-Man’s Land* and *The Hothouse* all enjoyed successful runs, and Pinter directed a production of *The Old Masters* here in 2004. After his death, it was thought fitting to bestow the honour of naming a theatre after him, and the name was officially changed on 13 Oct. 2011 to the Harold Pinter Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre Group own the Harold Pinter Theatre.

## Harold Pinter Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels – Stalls, Dress Circle, Royal Circle and Balcony. The top three levels are a horseshoe shape around the stalls.

The Stalls is a single block of seats, and offers good sightlines. Some seats are impaired by supportive pillars and the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle doesn’t offer a great raking in the seating, but the view is not affected by the overhang of the Royal Circle.

The Royal Circle seats curve towards the stage more noticeably than the Dress Circle.

The Balcony feels very high in this theatre.
