Based on the Academy Award-winning movie by Billy Wilder, the *Sunset Boulevard* musical features songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber with a book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton.

The show revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street of the title. When young and promising screenwriter Joe Gillis crosses her path, she sees in this up-and-coming writer an opportunity to make her return to the big screen, with romance and tragedy to follow.

Nicole Scherzinger, the original lead singer of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls, takes on this legendary role in her Broadway debut following her acclaimed West End bow, and her London co-stars reprise their roles for *Sunset Boulevard* in New York: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer, and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling.

## What to watch for

- Nicole Scherzinger joins a long line of Broadway stars who have played fading diva Norma Desmond. Tony Award winner Patti LuPone and Academy Award nominee Glenn Close have both played her on Broadway and in London's West End. Other stage stars, including Stephanie J. Block and Kathryn Evans, have taken on the role in other productions.
- Critics raved about the London production. Time Out London’s critic wrote that *Sunset Boulevard*’s “mind-blowing video and a truly singular use of pop star Nicole Scherzinger power Jamie Lloyd’s triumphantly out-there take on the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic.” Additionally, Variety said that “not for one second is there any doubt that Scherzinger has a dominating presence and magnificent money notes.”
- You have likely heard some of the songs before. *Sunset Boulevard* includes the standards “As If We Never Said Goodbye,” “With One Look,” and the title song naming the Los Angeles area where this show is set, “Sunset Boulevard.”
- This production lacks traditional Broadway razzle-dazzle — and it works. Lots of Broadway shows boast stunning spectacle, from flying witches to life-size animal puppets. Here, Jamie Lloyd makes bold use of video and color, and little else but the powerful actors, to tell this reimagined story.

Tony Award nominee and Olivier Award winner Nicole Scherzinger stars in Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical as Norma Desmond, a fading Hollywood film star who will do anything to get back in the spotlight and ropes a young screenwriter into her plan. This stirring and singular revival is directed by British auteur Jamie Lloyd, who staged *A Doll’s House* with Jessica Chastain.

Tom Francis' final performance will be on July 6. Pierre Marais will then take on the role of Joe Gillis.

See *Sunset Boulevard* on Broadway, the 2025 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival and a production unlike any you’ve seen before. The smash-hit London revival, starring Tony winner Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls, is hopping across the pond and promises to be one of the hottest tickets of the season — get *Sunset Boulevard* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Haunted by her memories and dreams, movie star Norma Desmond (Scherzinger) is far from the top and longs to return to the big screen. A struggling screenwriter who can’t sell his scripts to the Hollywood studios may be her only hope until their dangerous and compelling relationship leads to disastrous circumstances. Drenched in champagne and cynicism, *Sunset Boulevard* on Broadway scrutinizes the ambitions and frustrations of its characters and their addicting need for fame and adoration.

In today’s online and social media-obsessed culture, the musical’s themes of ambition and fame deeply resonate. Director Jamie Lloyd has created a sparse and stunning new production that shocks and wows contemporary audiences. He breathed fresh life into last season’s *A Doll’s House* starring [Jessica Chastain](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jessica-chastain), cutting that Ibsen classic to its core with a minimalist and haunting design. Now, the acclaimed West End production brings back Olivier Award nominee Scherzinger, who makes a highly anticipated Broadway debut as Norma Desmond, a role previously played by legends such as [Patti LuPone](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/patti-lupone) and Glenn Close.

Alongside this thrilling new production, the soaring music — including the songs “The Perfect Year,” “With One Look,” “As If We Never Said Goodbye” and the title song — by Andrew Lloyd Webber (known for his Tony Award-winning hits like *The Phantom of the Opera*, *Cats*, *Jesus Christ Superstar*, and others) makes *Sunset Boulevard* one of the buzziest revivals and productions of the Broadway season. Wicked on Broadway has defied gravity at the Gershwin Theatre for nearly 20 years and counting, making history as the fourth-longest-running Broadway show of all time. Get Wicked tickets on New York Theatre Guide now and see the musical that has changed countless audiences for good.

Based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, the Wicked musical centers on the Wizard of Oz antagonist before she got that malicious moniker. First, she was Elphaba, a green-skinned outcast with an extraordinary talent for sorcery. She strikes up an unlikely friendship with Glinda the Good Witch at school, but it turns upside down when a meeting with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz goes awry.

The Wicked original cast recording won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, with songs including "Defying Gravity," "Popular," and "For Good." Stephen Schwartz, who's also known for musicals like Pippin and Godspell, composed the Wicked musical, and Winnie Holzman adapted Maguire's novel into the show's book.

Maguire's novel was originally supposed to be adapted into a feature film; however, after a little persuasion from Schwartz, who had read the book and developed his own theatrical interpretation, Universal agreed to co-produce the property as a stage musical. Now, a two-part Wicked film adaptation is currently in the works, starring Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey.

*Wicked* is a musical and Broadway sensation that looks at what happened in the Land of Oz, but from a different angle. The show's protagonist is Elphaba — a character you might know best as the Wicked Witch of the West. *Wicked* tells the story of how she got that title and how she was once roommates and best friends with Glinda the Good Witch. Ultimately, the musical also questions whether Elphaba is truly wicked at all.

With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” *Wicked* on Broadway has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” The show has gone on to perform all over the world and is Broadway's fifth-longest-running show. Time Magazine cheers *Wicked* on Broadway, too: “If every musical had the brain, heart, and courage of *Wicked*, Broadway really would be a magical place.”

## What to watch for

- *Wicked* composer Stephen Schwartz asked his daughter for help writing the lyrics to “For Good.” He asked her what she would say if she could never see her best friend again, and the song’s lyrics are a version of what his daughter told him.
- The Wicked Witch of the West, also known as Elphaba, gets her name in the musical from combining the phonetic sounds of *The Wizard of Oz* novelist L. Frank Baum's initials: L.F.B.
- Did you know that Elphaba flies in *Wicked*? When Elphaba soars above the skies at the end of Act 1, she’s not on a wire. The actress stands on a small platform, and when it rises, it looks like her dress is expanding infinitely.
- Listen carefully to the first few notes of what Stephen Schwartz calls the “Unlimited Theme” — it appears in “The Wizard and I” and “For Good.” The first seven notes as Elphaba sings “I’m limited…” are the same as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from *The Wizard of Oz*.
- *Wicked* is based most directly on the 1995 book *Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West*. The musical is also set to be adapted into a film starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda!
