Becky Shaw - Product Media - Poster Image (square)

Playbill wrote that *Becky Shaw*, about a quartet of emotionally damaged and dependent young people, "may be Gina Gionfriddo's most mature play to date." Gionfriddo has an incisive writing style and a commanding voice — she went on to become a Pultizer Prize finalist for the second time for her next play, *Rapture, Blister, Burn*. Writing about contemporary women, she has a knack for finding the eccentricities that make them funny yet serious and wise yet foolish, all at the same time. Her characters are always wonderfully alive.

That is certainly the case for the various women in *Becky Shaw*, like Susan, a woman with MS who hooks up with a man much younger than herself. Susan, a domineering woman, also has a dysfunctional relationship with her daughter Suzanna. It all amounts to some wacky fireworks in this singular play where the stranger things get, the more human the characters become.

## What to watch for

- *Becky Shaw* premiered at the Humana Festival in 2008, a leading new-play conference, and opened off Broadway later that year.
- Trip Cullman is known for his direction of new plays and musicals, including *Unknown Soldier* and *We Had a World*.
- Charles Isherwood reviewed the play for The New York Times, writing, "The new play marks an impressive stride for a writer with a saw-toothed wit."
- The original New York cast of this play featured Annie Parisse (as Becky Shaw) and David Wilson Barnes, Emily Bergl, Kelly Bishop, and Thomas Sadoski.

A dark comedy about sex, dating, and relationships of all kinds, *Becky Shaw* follows a quartet of emotionally damaged and dependent young people.

*Becky Shaw* — a smart, feisty play about sex, ethics, and relationships — is back following its raucous debut in 2008. *Becky Shaw* on Broadway stars 2026 Tony Award winner Alden Ehrenreich (*Weapons*), Emmy Award nominee Madeline Brewer (*The Handmaid's Tale*), Tony winner Lauren Patten (*Jagged Little Pill*), Patrick Ball (*The Pitt*), and three-time Tony nominee Linda Emond. Don't miss this hilarious dark comedy, "a big box of fireworks fizzling and crackling from beginning to end," per The New York Times's rave review.

Experience *Becky Shaw* on Broadway — Gina Gionfriddo's dynamic play became a Pulitzer Prize finalist thanks to its nuanced depictions of modern women, sex, and humor. Following a quartet of emotionally damaged and dependent young people, Gionfriddo's razor-sharp comedy is a piercing and unrelenting examination of how people navigate all kinds of relationships: between lovers, parents and children, and within themselves.

Critics quickly saw the cleverness and beating heart in this unique hit play: Charles Isherwood reviewed the play for The New York Times, writing it "marks an impressive stride for a writer with a saw-toothed wit and a seductive interest in exploring the rewards and responsibilities of emotional interdependence. *Becky Shaw* is a thoroughly enjoyable play, suspenseful, witty and infused with an unsettling sense of the potential for psychic disaster inherent in almost any close relationship."

Gionfriddo went on to become a celebrated voice, earning a second Pulitzer Prize nomination for her following play, *Rapture, Blister, Burn*. Obie Award winner Trip Cullman directs this revival, marking the play's Broadway debut — Cullman has a long history of staging new works, including *Unknown Soldier, We Had a World, The Pain of My Belligerence*, and others.

*Becky Shaw* premiered at the Humana Festival in 2008 before opening off Broadway later that year. Now, it's back on stage.

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.
