Donald Margulies has long proved himself to be a wise writer understanding how the subtlest events can bring out the biggest emotions. As the prize-winning author of *Dinner with Friends, Sight Unseen*, and *Collected Stories*, he is a masterful storyteller and a humorous interpreter ot married life. That light comedy is on great display in his new play, *Lunar Eclipse*.

In this new play, George (Reed Birney, *Succession, Mass*) and Em (Lisa Emery, *Ozark, Jessica Jones*) spend a night on their Kentucky farm as the seven stages of the celestial phenomenon unfold. Amidst a lunar eclipse, the pair chat about kids, dogs, homes…and also unravel the secrets between them. Maybe they are still in love, or maybe they are just discovering how little they know about the person sitting opposite them.

A fresh play about later-in-life love, *Lunar Eclipse* is a stirring and aching show and a love letter to two of New York’s finest theatre performers.

## What to watch for
- Reed Birney was in a previous production of the play in Massachusetts, with The New York Times raving “he doesn’t so much produce emotions as shed them. After nearly 50 years onstage, that’s no surprise.”
- Birney has been in countless New York plays, including *Circle Mirror Transformation* and *Casa Valentina*, but he is also known for his work on the screen, as on *High Maintenance, Girls, Changeling*, and more.
- Lisa Emery is also a frequent screen and stage presence, with TV and film roles on *Sex and the City* and *Margot at the Wedding* and stage appearances in *Marvin’s Room, Iron*, and more.
- Kate Whoriskey is a new-play director with many credits under her belt, including *How I Learned to Drive* at Second Stage, *Sweat* on Broadway, and *Aubergine* at Playwrights Horizons.

*Lunar Eclipse* by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies is a new two-hander in which Reed Birney and Lisa Emery play a couple reflecting on their marriage — and how little they still know about one another.

Get *Lunar Eclipse* tickets and see theatre icons Reed Birney and Lisa Emery star in a starry play: a celestial event approaches, and a married couple must either rise to its occasion or stay grounded on earth. A riveting and emotional new work from Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies (*Dinner With Friends, Sight Unseen, Collected Stories*), *Lunar Eclipse* plays at The Pershing Square Signature Center in a Second Stage Theater production, starting in May and playing for a limited run.

“Maybe forgetting yourself once in a while is a good thing,” a character says in this stirring New York premiere. Experience *Lunar Eclipse* off Broadway for a poetic and rich play directed by Kate Whoriskey (*Sweat*) about the fragility of memory and power of time.

Somewhere on a Kentucky farm, long-married couple George (Birney) and Em (Emery) stare up at the night sky. They sip bourbon and reflect on their dogs, children, and land. As the stars come out and the drinks empty, however, they realize they know less about one another than they once thought, undoing the fabric of their relationship as it approaches its later days. A funny, touching, and universal play about love, *Lunar Eclipse* depicts a specific couple grappling with its identity beneath the cosmos as they look forward to the time they have left.

Obie winner Emery (*Ozark*) joins this new play, which Birney (*Mass*) appeared in in Massachusetts in 2023. “The play benefits immensely from the detail and discipline of Birney’s superb performance,” The New York Times wrote. “He doesn’t so much produce emotions as shed them. After nearly 50 years onstage, that’s no surprise.”

Now, see two stars collide in this Second Stage play.

*Lunar Eclipse* by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies is an intimate look at marriage in late middle age; as a celestial event approaches, Reed Birney and Lisa Emery’s characters reflect on decades of partnership — and the cavernous gaps that are still between them.

One of New York's most acclaimed stage performers, Birney boasts a decades-spanning career whose Broadway credits include *The Humans* (Tony Award), *Picnic,* *Casa Valentina, Gemini* and *1984.* Off Broadway, Birney performed in *Circle Mirror Transformation* and received Drama Desk Awards for his performances in *Casa Valentina* and *The Humans.*
