The multi award-winning West End production of HAMILTON is now playing at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre.

HAMILTON is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and helped shape the very foundations of the America we know today. The score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway – the story of America then, as told by America now.

HAMILTON is the winner of 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 7 Olivier Awards, the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

## *Hamilton*, a cultural phenomenon

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical centres on the life of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton, who was a key figure in shaping the nation. The award-winning hit features a mash-up of hip-hop, R&B, and soul songs performed by a diverse cast.

Orphaned at a young age, Hamilton moved to New York in the hope of a better life. While there, there he impressed those around him with his hunger for revolution and reform. The story sees Hamilton become George Washington's right-hand man, fall in love, and go on to become the first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. 

## About *Hamilton the Musical*

The seeds for the *Hamilton* musical were planted when composer Lin-Manuel Miranda purchased a copy of Ron Chernow's biography, *Alexander Hamilton*. Within a few pages, Miranda started to envision the revolutionary's life in musical form and embarked on the project in 2009 by penning *The Hamilton Mixtape* — a number of songs that would later go on to form the show. 

During this time, he was invited to the White House to perform at an evening of Poetry, Music, and Spoken Word in front of President Barack Obama and the First Lady. He treated audiences to the song "Alexander Hamilton", which was met with scattered laughter from the crowd. After workshopping the mixtape, *Hamilton* finally received its Off-Broadway premiere at the Public Theater in 2015 before later transferring to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

## Why does the show *Hamilton* resonate with audiences? 

*Hamilton* has left a major impression on audiences since it first premiered Off-Broadway in 2015. The show offers a unique perspective of one of the lesser-known founding fathers using an innovative approach to make the story more relevant and engaging to a modern audience with its infusion of hip-hop and rap and commitment to diverse casting.

The musical won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it the first musical to win the award since 2010 and the 9th musical to win the accolade since 1930. *Hamilton* went on to win 11 Tony Awards, six Olivier Awards, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

## Who wrote *Hamilton*?

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the *Hamilton* musical. His Hamilton score features a fusion of emotive songs that combine hip-hop, R&B, soul, and classical musical theatre numbers, while the musical is entirely sung-through by its cast. Since its premiere, Hamilton shot into the public consciousness. It won 11 Tony Awards, including Outstanding Musical and all four acting categories.

London welcomed the West End production of *Hamilton* in 2017 at the newly refurbished Victoria Palace Theatre. The musical won a record-equalling seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music. *Hamilton* in London has well and truly found a second home.

## What to Watch For:

- Most people know that *Hamilton* is a biographical musical detailing the life of the Founding Father. But, creating a musical based on one man isn't easy. So where did Lin-Manuel Miranda get his inspiration from? While on holiday, Lin-Manuel Miranda read Ron Chernow’s biography about the revolutionary, and early ideas for *Hamilton* were born.
- Lin-Manuel Miranda gave a work-in-progress performance of the opening song “Alexander Hamilton” at the White House in 2009 for President Barack Obama. The number would eventually become the show’s opening song. Since then, the original Broadway *Hamilton* cast performed at the White House.
- Miranda isn't a one-trick pony. His other musicals include *In The Heights* and *Bring It On*, and he's also worked on films such as *Moana* and *Encanto.*
- In London, *Hamilton* won seven Olivier Awards from 13 nominations. Currently, it equals the record for most Oliviers won by a musical, tied with *Matilda the Musical*. 
- The *Hamilton* musical features traditional musical theatre songs, but there's plenty of rap too. The rap song “Guns and Ships” performed by the character, Marquis de Lafayette breaks records as the fastest song in any musical. There's an average of 6.3 words per second in the song. That's fast!

With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, *Hamilton* tells a story of ambition, revolution, legacy, and love, charting Alexander Hamilton’s rise from poverty to become George Washington’s “Right Hand Man” and the first US Treasury Secretary, while his rival Aaron Burr watches on, determined to be in “The Room Where It Happens”. The Victoria Palace Theatre opened on 6 Nov. 1911. In 1934, a production of Rev. Walter Reynolds’ *Young England* played here and was so badly reviewed that it enjoyed a cult success, playing 278 performances to full houses. 

Lupino Lane starred in a production of *Me and My Girl* in 1937 which enjoyed success and led to Lane managing the theatre through the end of World War II, starting in early 1945 with a series of variety acts.

In the 1980s, the theatre began its association with musical theatre. Proving to be a long-runner for the venue, *Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story* opened in 1989 and later transferred to the [Novello Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/novello-theatre) in 1995. 

Successful productions of *Jolson*, starring Brian Conley, *Annie* and *Kiss Me, Kate* have resided in the theatre since, but it was the 2005 arrival of a very British musical that saw the theatre packed for 11 years – *[Billy Elliot The Musical](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/billy-elliot)*. The show opened to rave reviews in May 2005, winning four Olivier Awards, and went on to win 10 Tony Awards in its Broadway transfer in 2009.

It was announced in May 2014 that Sir Cameron Mackintosh would buy the theatre through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. Mackintosh closed the theatre in 2016 for an extensive renovation, and the theatre re-opened a year later with [*Hamilton*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/hamilton).

This epic show follows Alexander Hamilton’s rise from nothing to become George Washington’s right-hand man, America’s first Secretary of the Treasury, and friend-turned-enemy of Aaron Burr – the man who would eventually kill him in an infamous duel.

Surrounding *Hamilton* in the musical are plenty of real-life historical figures: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, the Marquis de Lafayette, and more. They make mischief throughout the show as they navigate the behemoth task of founding a new country and creating a government.

Miranda was first inspired to write an Alexander Hamilton musical in 2008 after reading Ron Chernow’s 700-page biography of the Founding Father on vacation. Miranda had just won the Best Musical Tony Award for *In the Heights* that year, so then-President Barack Obama invited him to perform a song from the show at the 2009 White House Poetry Jam. Instead, Miranda surprised everyone by busting out an early version of his budding musical’s opening number.

The rest, as they say, is history. *Hamilton* premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2015, transferring later that year to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. For writing *Hamilton's* book, music, and lyrics, Miranda would become a household name. 

It seemed ludicrous at first, but to Miranda, Alexander Hamilton embodied hip-hop. *Hamilton* director Thomas Kail later explained in an interview: “You have someone born into very difficult circumstances — profound poverty, no parents, no support — who used words to elevate himself out of those circumstances, and then died violently because of those words. That’s a classic hip-hop story. It’s the story of Tupac or Big.” 

## What to watch for

- Miranda initially conceived *Hamilton* as a record called *The Hamilton Mixtape*, but Kail encouraged him to develop a full musical. *The Hamilton Mixtape* was later released as a companion album to the show.
- *In the Heights*, about a small community in New York’s Washington Heights, has lots of parallels with *Hamilton*. Miranda’s longtime collaborators Kail and Andy Blankenbuehler (*Hamilton*’s choreographer) were involved in that production, and *In the Heights* also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
- The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the show’s original cast recording.
- *Hamilton* is full of homages to other shows. The lyric “Nobody needs to know” comes directly from Jason Robert Brown’s *The Last Five Years*. George Washington’s line “I’m the model of a modern major general” is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s *Pirates of Penzance*. *Hamilton* also quotes a line from *Macbeth*: "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day."
- *Hamilton* made history musicals cool and fresh, but Miranda’s isn’t the first musical about the American Revolution. His show is predated by the 1969 Best Musical winner *1776*, which follows John Adams as he tries to convince his fellow politicians to declare independence from Britain.

The Hamilton musical is about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, who most people know as the face of the $10 bill. What they might not know is how he fought alongside George Washington in the Revolutionary War, shaped the American financial system as we know it, and even became the first politician involved in a sex scandal.

The key story, however, is that of Hamilton and fellow politician Aaron Burr. In Miranda's reimagining, which takes some liberties with history, had a fraught, on-and-off friendship that would eventually lead to their famous duel. All this and more is dramatized in Hamilton on Broadway, which is almost entirely sung and rapped through and features a diverse cast to reflect the makeup of modern-day America.

The show's creator and original leading man, Lin-Manuel Miranda, made his mark in the Broadway theatre community for his work on In The Heights&nbsp;in 2008 and Bring It On in 2012,&nbsp;but Hamilton made him a household name&nbsp;in&nbsp;mainstream American pop culture. Hamilton also made top Broadway stars out of original cast members Leslie Odom, Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Daveed Diggs (who each took home a Tony Award in their respective categories), as well as Phillipa Soo, Christopher Jackson, and Okieriete Onaodowan. All original principal cast members have now left the Broadway production, but that hasn't stopped fans who continue to flock to the theatre for sold-out performances.

Miranda's idea to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton through hip hop, rap, and R&amp;B,and with a multi-racial cast, captured the imagination of Americans coast to coast. For students, Hamilton would become the most revolutionary and exciting history lesson they would ever attend. The musical combines 18th-century-inspired, Tony-winning costumes by Paul Tazewell and slick, modern, Tony-winning choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler to create a fresh&nbsp;Broadway production to appeal to those outside the Broadway community and hardened theatregoers in equal measure.

## When did *Hamilton* come out on Broadway?

Hamilton on Broadway premiered in July 2015, a few months after receiving its Off-Broadway world premiere. The show went on to earn a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations in 2016 and tied with The Producers for most Tony wins with a total of 11, including Best Musical. (That year's ceremony was dubbed "The Hamil-Tonys" since the musical had so much success.) Miranda also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the original Broadway cast recording&nbsp;won a Grammy after reaching number 3&nbsp;on the Billboard charts at one point. Its companion album, The Hamilton Mixtape, later debuted at the top spot in December 2016.
