The Hills of California 1080 x 1080

*The Hills of California* traces the lives of four Webb sisters from the 1950s to 1970s, at which point audiences meet them for a sweltering reunion one summer at their childhood home in a seaside English town. Sisters Ruby and Gloria now both have families of their own, and Jill never left the homestead. Joan, however, has not been heard from in decades, but Jill swears their mother’s favorite will surprise them this time and finally show up.

Returning to their childhood home — haunted by old memories of passion, financial stress, and living with a single mother — unearths different feelings and resentments from each sister, especially because it was during that indelible 1950s period that the girls could almost taste fame. Each night, the sisters would practice their singing routine, and when a record producer arrived to offer a chance at glory, the sisters’ lives were forever redrawn. A gorgeous, sweeping story about the romance between sisters, *The Hills of California* is an epic tale and an utterly moving portrait of family.

## What to watch for

- Sam Mendes is known for his collaborations with Jez Butterworth, but he is also a Broadway vet unto himself, staging a revival of *Gypsy*; he's also an Oscar winner, known for his hit films *1917* and *American Beauty*.
- *The Hills of California* was met with critical acclaim in London; in a five-star review, London Times wrote that Butterworth and Mendes “have developed a slick production in which not a word, not even a breath, is wasted.”
- Butterworth is known for his rich tales of family that interconnect characters across the years; *The Ferryman* was similarly enormous in scope in its tackling of a fractured family during The Troubles.
- While *The Hills of California* is certainly a play, audiences, like with *[Stereophonic](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/29539-stereophonic)*, can expect original music woven throughout as the sisters build their act.

Get *The Hills of California* tickets and see the newest play from Tony Award winners Jez Butterworth and Sam Mendes, the writer and director behind the smash hit, award-winning success *The Ferryman*. A five-star “masterpiece” (London Theatre), *The Hills of California* plays for a strictly limited engagement on Broadway this fall starting September 11. Tickets for *The Hills of California*, now a recipient of seven Tony Award nominations, are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Experience *The Hills of California* on Broadway. In this New York City premiere from the writer of *Jerusalem* and the director of *The Lehman Trilogy*, audiences follow the four Webb sisters across the decades. In the scorching heat of a 1970s summer, four sisters return to their childhood home in Blackpool, an English seaside town, where their mother lies dying upstairs. Two sisters, Gloria and Ruby, now have families of their own, but Jill never left. And Joan? She hasn't been seen or heard from in two decades, but Jill insists that their mother’s favorite won’t let them down this time.

The deteriorating seaside home comes alive with bittersweet memories of thrilling fun and financial stress that colored the women’s shared childhood. Twenty years prior, each night the four young sisters rehearse their promising singing act, managed by their fiercely devoted single mother. But when a record producer offers a chance at stardom and a reason to escape, it will cost them all dearly.

Featuring a stunning design and soaring original music, *The Hills of California* is “a rich, funny, brilliantly layered drama” per The Financial Times. Time Out calls Butterworth “remarkable” and Vogue calls the play “devastating and hilarious.” A fiercely moving new play, *The Hills of California* traces sisters’ passions and the price of chasing dreams.

*The Hills of California* tickets are now on sale.

Set during The Troubles, the 30-year war that tore Northern Ireland apart, “The Ferryman” opens with the discovery of a dead body. Quinn Carney’s brother, Seamus, was one of the Disappeared — a term referring to those believed to have been abducted, murdered, and secretly buried by the Irish Republican Army — until now, the same day as Quinn’s yearly harvest. The past literally comes back to haunt Quinn, a former IRA activist turned farmer, when an unexpected visitor shows up in Jez Butterworth’s latest play exploring politics in 1980s Ireland.

Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, Butterworth’s newest work comes to Broadway following great acclaim in London’s West End and winning three 2018 Olivier Awards, including Best New Play. “The Ferryman” premiered at the Royal Court in spring 2017 before immediately transferring to the West End Gielgud Theatre.

Recommended for ages 10+. Children under 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
The play is partly based on the experiences of playwright Jez Butterworth’s partner at the time, actor Laura Donnelly, whose uncle disappeared seven months before she was born. Donnelly also starred in the show’s premiere.

“The Ferryman” premiered in spring 2017 at the Royal Court, where playwright Jez Butterworth’s “The River” and “Jerusalem” also premiered before receiving Broadway engagements.

The production features a large cast for a play, with more than 30 members, as well as a live rabbit and a goose.

At the 2018 Olivier Awards, the show took home three awards — for Best New Play, Best Actress, and Best Director.

Jez Butterworth's smash hit play The Ferryman, directed by Sam Mendes, transfered to Broadway, where it began previews on October 2, 2018, and officially opened to rave reviews on October 21.The Ferryman became the fastest-selling show in the history of London's Royal Court Theatre and, following a sold-out run at the venue in spring 2017, the epic drama - both in concept and scale - transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for a twice-extended run in the West End and continued to garner critical acclaim and a plethora of accolades, including the Olivier Award for "Best New Play".Although The Ferryman is laced with the intricacies of the political unrest of the 1980's in Northern Ireland - a time referred to as 'The Troubles' - no prior background knowledge is necessary to feel moved by this exquisitely written portrait of a family in crisis. The play's central themes of love, loss, and grief will resonate with you, no matter where you're from and no matter what your background. The family in question is the Carney family and we join them at their rural farmhouse as they are about to celebrate the annual harvest. But as this multi-generational, extended family gather together, secrets of the past are unearthed in a living tapestry of lies, betrayals and hidden truths. As has become somewhat of a signature for Jez Butterworth, whose previous Broadway credits include the Tony-nominated masterpiece Jerusalem and the Hugh Jackman-led three-hander The River, The Ferryman is at times lyrical and mystical in its writing, drawing inspiration from Irish mythology. This element is anchored by the character of Aunt Maggie Far Away, who drifts in and out of dementia to regale younger members of the family with stories of old and prophecies for the future. She even forewarns of the fate of the Carney family, as the figurative tidal wave moves ever closer to the farmhouse by the play's conclusion. With a huge ensemble cast - that also includes babies, rabbits and geese - all the pieces of this extraordinary puzzle receive their moment in the spotlight and come together with a pace that creeps up on the audience, catching us off-guard at every twist and turn. So many of Butterworth's characters are relatable - even in their extreme views or circumstances. You understand their pain, their motivations and their searing loss. After 3 hours and 15 minutes - which all too tellingly fly by - you feel a part of this family, inextricably woven together. The Ferryman is a theatrical experience unlike any other in recent Broadway history - as utterly shocking as it is enchanting. The Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre opened on January 11, 1927. The venue was originally named the Royale by real-estate magnates, the Chanin Brothers, as part of a three-theatre complex.

In 1930, the Chanins transferred ownership of all three houses to the Shubert Organization. During the Great Depression, control of the Jacobs passed to John Golden, who renamed the theatre after himself and ran it from 1934 to 1936. (This venue is not to be confused with the current John Golden Theatre, which is right next door.)

The Shuberts regained control in 1936 and restored the theatre's name to the Royale. It was renamed the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on May 9, 2005 after the longtime Shubert Organization president.
