Bess Wohl, a Tony Award nominee for her Broadway play *Grand Horizons*, is known for plays of varying styles that all offer more than meets the eye. *Camp Siegfried* is based on the real New York campground that was seemingly idyllic but was where American children of German descent were taught Nazi ideology. *Small Mouth Sounds* followed participants unraveling at a silent retreat, and her musical *Pretty Filthy* dove into the private and professional lives of adult film stars.

Often highly imaginative but based in detailed research, Wohl’s plays have enjoyed critical acclaim, extensions, and many recognitions. She’s been nominated for the Lucille Lortel Award and Drama Desk Award and won a Outer Critics Circle Award.

Now, her new play takes audiences to 1970, where six women, all strangers, gather at a community center’s basement gym to discuss their aspirations. Half a century later, one of their daughters tries to piece together her mom's mysterious life, hoping her onetime friends can shed light on what the hell actually happened all those years ago.

## What to watch for

- Like Bess Wohl, director Whitney White is equally lauded: she directed the many New York and regional productions of *What to Send Up When It Goes Down* and is an Obie Award winner.
- This is not the first time Wohl has played with different time periods in a play; previously, in *Make Believe*, young actors and adult professionals played a trio of siblings across the decades.
- Even before its premiere, this play was generating buzz; *Liberation* is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.

1031 - Adina Verson, Susannah Flood, Betsy Aidem, Audrey Corsa, Kristolyn Lloyd and Irene Sofia Lucio in the Broadway production of Liberation by Bess Wohl, directed by Whitney White ©Little Fang

This award-winning play from Tony nominee Bess Wohl follows two generations of women in the feminist movement: one who starts an activism group in the 1970s, and her daughter, who looks back 50 years later and wonders where her mom's efforts went wrong.

Get *Liberation* tickets and experience an award-winning play from Tony Award nominee Bess Wohl (*Grand Horizons*), on Broadway following a hit Off-Broadway world premiere. Another Tony nominee, Whitney White (*Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*), directs this provocative and illuminating new work, winner of an Outer Critics Circle Award Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, and which New York Theatre Guide's critic hailed as "essential theatregoing this Broadway season."

The new play traces the events of two time periods: In 1970, six women, all strangers to each other, gathered at their local community center. In its basement gym, these women wanted to shake up their lives — and the world around them. In the near-present, half a century later, one of their daughters passionately seeks the answer to one question: what the hell happened?

An electric play about the open conversations women share behind closed doors, *Liberation* comes to the James Earl Jones Theatre on Broadway. Award-winning playwright Wohl is known for her pointed but moving works, which are often sly and reveal more than meets the eye. Such plays have made her a popular fixture on and off Broadway over the past decade. A Drama Desk Award and Lortel Award nominee for the musical *Pretty Filthy*, she has also written *Grand Horizons, Small Mouth Sounds, Make Believe*, and *Camp Siegfried*.

White is also an accomplished New York artist, earning an Obie Award and directing the groundbreaking *What to Send Up When it Goes Down* along with productions at The Public Theater, Steppenwolf, and other esteemed theatres. Now, these two women pair up to tell a singular story about sisterhood found in unexpected places over the decades, and the sturdy legacies we attempt to build.

James Earl Jones Theatre

The James Earl Jones Theatre, formerly called the Cort Theatre, officially opened on December 20, 1912, with *Peg o' My Heart* starring Laurette Taylor. The venue was originally named after John Cort, founder of the Northwestern Theatrical Association. He commissioned Thomas W. Lamb to design the theatre, which would mirror the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

The Shubert Organization acquired the theatre in 1927, two years before Cort’s death. It has always been used as a traditional theatre except for the years from 1969 to 1972, when it became a television studio with the broadcast of *The Merv Griffin Show*.

Renovation work began at the Cort Theatre in 2021, and the venue reopened in 2022 under its new name. The building is now named for James Earl Jones, the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winning actor known for voice roles in *The Lion King* and *Star Wars* films and stage performances in shows including *The Great White Hope* and *Fences*, which both earned him Tony Awards. He also earned a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2017.
