The six-time Tony Award-winning *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* has been enchanting Broadway audiences since 2018. Now, the formerly two-part production has been newly transfigured into a one-night event. Get *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* tickets on TodayTix.

The *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* play picks up right where the last *Harry Potter* film left off: on Platform 9 3/4, where Harry Potter, now married to Ginny Weasley and 19 years past the Battle of Hogwarts, is seeing his son Albus Severus off to his first year at the wizarding school. Albus follows in his father’s footsteps, sharing a train car with a Weasley (rather, a Granger-Weasley, Hermione and Ron’s daughter Rose), but also meets Scorpius Malfoy, Draco’s son.

Whereas Harry and Draco were rivals at Hogwarts, Albus and Scorpius become fast friends. A few years into their time at school, the elderly Amos Diggory, the father of a boy who died while Harry was at Hogwarts, asks Harry to bring him back. Harry refuses, so Albus and Scorpius take on the challenge. They’re launched into a time-bending adventure through the Wizarding World, and as they travel deeper and deeper into the past, their parents soon go after them. Family tensions, old magic artifacts, and dark forces arise — as do some characters that Harry and the others thought were gone for good.

The script for *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* was also released as “the eighth Harry Potter book” on the eve of July 31, 2016, Harry Potter’s birthday. That same night, on July 30, the show played its very first performance in London. The premiere of *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* in New York took place in March 2018, and the show went on to win six Tonys including Best Play. In December 2018, *Cursed Child* set a new record for highest weekly ticket sales by a play at $2.5 million. After the 2020-2021 Broadway shutdown, a new version of the play reopened on Broadway, this time in one 3.5-hour long production rather than two consecutive shows.

Journey to Hogwarts in New York and get *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* Broadway tickets now.

## What to watch for

- The Lyric Theatre underwent a total renovation specifically for *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child*. Patronuses and *Harry Potter* quotes are painted on the walls, the carpet is patterned with magical symbols, and a whole room of the lobby has been transfigured into a *Harry Potter* merchandise store where you can get house apparel, wands, and more.
- The original London premiere of *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* got 11 Olivier Award nominations, the most a play has ever received. After winning nine of them, the show set a record for most Olivier wins by a play too!
- Chris Columbus, who directed the original *Harry Potter* movies, said in an interview that he’d be interested in directing a film adaptation of *Cursed Child* and bringing back Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to reprise their original roles as adults. What spell do we have to cast to make this happen?
- *Cursed Child* transports Broadway audiences to the U.K. Wizarding World, but in J.K. Rowling’s universe, there’s a whole U.S. Wizarding World, too! The U.S. has its own magic academy called Ilvermorny, and the U.S. is the setting of the magical adventures in *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, the *Harry Potter* film spinoff series starring Eddie Redmayne as magic zoologist Newt Scamander.
- *Cursed Child* uses tons of spellbinding special effects to bring the Wizarding World to life — but we can’t spoil what they are or how they work! You’ll have to see the magic for yourself.

Written by Jack Thorne and winner of top Tony and Olivier Awards, *Harry Potter and the Cursed Child* takes place 19 years after the events of J. K. Rowling's novel *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.* Harry’s son Albus attends Hogwarts, and what follows is an epic coming-of-age story as Albus learns to celebrate the parts of himself that reflect, and differ from, his family. John Tiffany earned a Tony directing the play, now a global hit like the books and films before it.

## What to watch for

- Major characters from the book, like Dumbledore, Snape, and Ginny, appear in the play, but fans of the book can also expect appearances from secondary characters, like Umbridge, Cedric, and Moaning Myrtle.
- The final edition of the Broadway premiere script was released on July 31: Harry Potter’s birthday.
- The Lyric Theatre was fully renovated for this production, with wallpaper and carpeting featuring Harry Potter-themed designs, a merchandise shop selling house regalia and wands, and a bar that sells butterbeer alongside standard concessions.
- Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, hinted at his interest in directing a film adaptation of this play, but no concrete plans have been announced.

Accio theatre! Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated play in recent Broadway history, the nine-time Olivier Award-winning West End hit Harry Potter and the Cursed Child made the trip across the pond in 2018 and opened its doors to crowds of excited Muggles in New York City.

The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play is the official eighth story in the Harry Potter franchise and the first to be presented on stage. The events of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child take place 19 years after those of the final J.K. Rowling novel, *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*.

The show focuses on a new generation of wizards — the children of Harry and Ginny Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and Draco Malfoy — as they attend Hogwarts and go on a new, time-traveling adventure. As they journey to the past, they come across fan-favorite characters and even change wizarding history — but their parents must jump in to help save the Wizarding World once more when things go awry.

The production features dazzling illusions, bringing magic to life before your eyes. We are obliged to #KeepTheSecrets in terms of the jaw-dropping stage magic, courtesy of illusions designer Jamie Harrison.

Rowling co-conceived the story of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child with John Tiffany and Jack Thorne, but Thorne is the lead playwright. The show won a record-breaking nine Olivier Awards in London, including Best New Play, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in New York won six Tonys, including Best Play. The original Broadway cast included seven of the original London stars.

From Steven Hoggett's spellbinding choreography, which renders scene changes and character entrances seamlessly, to John Tiffany's wildly innovative directorial choices in scenes involving the Hogwarts Express or the events of the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a masterful piece of theatre.
