Playwright Lauren Yee refers to *King of the Yees* as a kind of true story. It is not uncommon in theatre for artists to tug at their own past and dramatize it on stage, as with examples from memory plays like Tennessee Williams' *The Glass Menagerie* and Brian Friel's *Dancing at Lughnasa* to more contemporary examples like Mona Pirnot's *I Was Most Alive with You*. But *King of the Yees* stands out because of its distinct setting — Chinatown in San Francisco — and distinct voice.

Zooming in on a fraternal organization that the character Lauren sees as an obsolete relic, the playwright Lauren uses the journey to uncover past secrets as a way to theatrically trace a family lineage. When her dad goes missing, Lauren embarks on a journey toward home that she never could have foreseen. Hilarious and moving, *King of the Yees* is about what we inherit and what it means to truly be a Yee.

In *King of the Yees* off Broadway, Lauren Yee has written Lauren, a character who is a lot like her. Larry, her father, has been the soul of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association, a fraternal organization in San Francisco’s Chinatown, for two decades. But one day he mysteriously goes missing, igniting a rare kind of journey where Lauren, a playwright in New York, must rediscover who her father is, and how she fits into her unique family tree.

*King of the Yees* in New York is a heartfelt, funny, and highly theatrical piece about family lore and lineage. In focusing on a subsection of the Chinatown community in San Francisco, the play examines disappearing cultures, family legacy, and the poetry of self-discovery. Audiences can expect moving performances from Tran and Jue, two stars who sync up as child and parent in this play that is Yee's autobiographical-ish work.

The cast also includes Jon Norman Schneider, Maureen Sebastian, and David Shih. A writer for TV shows like *Billions* and *Pachinko*, Yee is an award-winning playwright known for *Mother Russia* and has won honors that include the Horton Foote Prize and Kesselring Prize.
