NY TT CATS Key Art with NYT Critics Pick

When *Cats: The Jellicle Ball* premiered off Broadway, it was met with resounding rave reviews that praised the revival's fresh interpretation: turning the competition of singing, dancing cats into a ballroom celebration, where queer performers vogue and pose to win rebirth into a new life. The revival is inspired by the world of ball culture born in 20th-century NYC and still thriving today, offering LGBTQ+ communities a safe space to express themselves as they compete in fashion, dance, and performance categories on behalf of "houses."

It is a major makeover for *Cats*, which became a cultural icon and one of Broadway's longest-running shows when the original production premiered in 1982. Now, it is back in New York in a thrilling revival that The New York Times called "exhilarating, fanciful, and fabulous," and Time Out New York called "the musical of the season" in a five-star review.

*The Jellicle Ball* has an A-list team: it is directed by Obie Award winners Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, with choreography by Obie Award winners and New York City ballroom legends Omari Wiles (House of Ricci) and Arturo Lyons (House of Miyake-Mugler).

## What to watch for

- Off Broadway, the ensemble won an Obie Award for their work on this show.
- Andrew Lloyd Webber has been enjoying multiple flashy revivals that reinvent his work, as with last season's *Sunset Blvd.* or London's *Evita.*
- *Cats* was last revived on Broadway a decade ago, for the first time, with Leona Lewis starring.
- Many of the performers in this production come from the ballroom world, bringing that entertainment and performance element with them into this interpretation of the musical.

Get *CATS: The Jellicle Ball* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see Andrew Lloyd Webber's worldwide phenomenon back in New York, reimagined in the ball culture scene. Based on T.S. Eliot’s *Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats*, this *CATS: The Jellicle Ball* musical smashed records, won awards, and left New York City purring. Now, it's a three-time Tony Award winner for Best Direction, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design.

*Cats* has always been a show about competing performers, but now that ensemble of performers make up a team of ballroom stars. With a cast that combines Broadway talent with ball culture icons, this version of *CATS: The Jellicle Ball* in New York City is as vibrant and thumping as the Big Apple itself. Don't miss electrifying ballroom choreography that The New York Times calls “a lightning strike that sets joy free."

The production, which features hit songs like "Memory" and "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," earned rave reviews from critics: it's a "sexy celebration of love and resilience” (New York Daily News) and “the most exhilarating fun that can be had in the theater” (The Washington Post).

Off Broadway, this revival also took home prizes: Obie Award winners Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch direct, with choreography by Obie Award winners and New York City Ballroom legends Omari Wiles (House of Ricci) and Arturo Lyons (House of Miyake-Mugler). The cast, too, took home an Obie Award for their ensemble work, and the original Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Now, *Cats* returns to Broadway in a kaleidoscope of glittering spectacle, iconic music, and unforgettably fierce dancing. Come one, come all to the amazing Jellicle Ball. Tickets to *CATS: The Jellicle Ball* are available here now.

*CATS: The Jellicle Ball* is a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic musical, set in the exciting nightlife ballroom scene.

André Robin De Shields was born January 12, 1946 in Dundalk, Maryland, a community within Baltimore. He is an award-winning actor, singer, choreographer, director, and dancer who has been active in his performance career since the 1960s, but he did not study the discipline in college — he holds a B.A. in English literature from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in African American studies from New York University, where he now serves as an adjunct professor. He did, however, star in a production of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun while at Ohio's Wilmington College, which he attended before transferring to Wisconsin. A few years later, he would make his professional debut in a 1969 Chicago production of Hair.

De Shields has numerous other regional credits to his name and three Jeff Awards for that work, but his most prolific appearances have been on the New York stage, where he has built a long and celebrated career since the 1970s. From then until the 1990s, he appeared in multiple productions at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club on Manhattan's Lower East Side, including Ken Rubenstein's Sacred Guard, Lamar Alford's Thoughts, and the Cotton Club Gala. He also directed two shows there: Chico Kasinoir's The Adventures of Rhubarb: The Rock and Roll Rabbit in 1985 and Saint Tous, which De Shields wrote himself.

Between La MaMa shows, De Shields also made his Broadway debut in the 1970s. His performance debut was as Xander in Stuart Gordon's 1973 science fiction play Warp!, and he made his choreography debut later that year on a Bette Midler revue, followed by a second one in 1975. His other notable Broadway roles include the titular role in The Wiz in 1975, a performer in the 1978 musical revue Ain't Misbehavin' and its 1988 revival, the Jester in the Duke Ellington musical Play On!, and the original Noah "Horse" T. Simmons in The Full Monty, Terrence McNally and David Yazbek's musical adaptation of the same-named film. His Play On! and The Full Monty performances each earned him a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk nomination. Most recently, he won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Hermes in [Hadestown](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hadestown-tickets), a role he still holds. His was one of eight Tony Awards the production won at the 2019 ceremony.

In 2026, he earned another Tony nomination for starring as Old Deuteronomy in [*Cats: The Jellicle Ball*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/39754-cats).

De Shields is also a veteran screen actor, having won an Emmy Award for the 1982 broadcast of Ain't Misbehavin' . Most recently, in another theater-film hybrid, he appeared as Anton Ego in a benefit concert performance of Ratatouille The Musical, streamed on TodayTix in January 2021. De Shields has also held roles on television shows including Cosby, Sex and the City, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Katy Keene, and he was a musical guest on John Mulaney's 2019 Netflix comedy special The Sack Lunch Bunch.
