Visionary director Robert Icke (*1984, The Doctor*) reimagines an ancient Greek tragedy for today, bringing the secrets of the past bursting into the present. Internationally renowned, multi award-winning Mark Strong and Lesley Manville star, and The Guardian says they “set the stage on fire. Icke’s modern retelling is riveting from beginning to end.”

Sophocles's *Oedipus Rex* is the story of a brash king who learns that his wife, Jocasta, is actually his mother, unleashing bitterness, anger, and violence. A parable about incest, pride, and the lies we tell ourself, the play has been reinvented over the centuries, but never quite like this: set in the present and chronicling a leader's fall from grace, the story has powerful resonance today. Strong and Manville deliver powerhouse performances that wowed audiences in London, and now they reunite to bring the production to New York City in a timely revival, playing in Broadway this fall.

## What to watch for
- Lesley Manville was seen in New York in *Long Day's Journey into Night* at BAM.
- Manville has an Oscar nomination for *Phantom Thread*.
- Strong is a Tony nominee for *A View from the Bridge*.
- Strong was nominated for an Olivier for *Oedipus* and Manville won one.

Oedipus on Broadway - NYC - Todaytix

A retelling of the Greek tragedy, Robert Icke's take on Sophocles' classic sees Oedipus and his wife Jocasta on election night, when everything is about to change.

See Tony Award winner Mark Strong and Olivier Award winner Lesley Manville star in this bold reimagining of Sophocles's ancient tragedy. *Oedipus* plays on Broadway this fall at Roundabout Theatre Company's Studio 54.

*Oedipus* on Broadway is retold for today's audiences as an explosive political thriller. Director Robert Icke (*1984, The Doctor*) gives this millennia-old Greek tragedy new life to bring the secrets of the past bursting into the present. Strong and Manville star, and The Guardian says they “set the stage on fire. Icke’s modern retelling is riveting from beginning to end.”

*Oedipus* is the story of a cocksure king who fails to believe a prophesy about his actual origin story: he killed his father and, unawares, took his mother as his wife. His great hubris prevents him from seeing the truth, only to have devastating consequences when he finally accepts his fate. Retold for today, this revival sets the story in the present on election night as Oedipus sees himself as a sure winner. However, news will break and the tides will turn in this dramatic political thriller.

A timely tale about how arrogance and politics coincide, and where the stakes are not just one man's reputation but a country's, Icke dives into today's splintered cultural climate to tell a startlingly fresh story.

A four-star hit in which Strong has "statesmanly bravado" and "Manville delivers an astonishing performance," per [London Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/oedipus-review-wyndhams-theatre), the production now comes to New York off of its acclaimed London bow. The play won Best Revival at the 2025 Olivier Awards and Manville won for Best Actress. Strong was nominated for Best Actor and Icke was nominated for Best Director.

Studio 54

The Studio 54 first opened in 1927 as the Gallo Opera House, and it operated as a music hall, broadcast soundstage, and nightclub (under the name Casino de Paree) until entrepreneurs Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager bought the building.

Under their ownership, the Studio 54 nightclub opened in 1977 and quickly became one of the world's most famous clubs, with frequent celebrity guests. The venue also operated under the name of The Ritz from 1989 until early 1993, and then as Cabaret Royale until 1995.

Roundabout Theatre Company's production of *Cabaret* played at Studio 54 in 1998 after the collapse of a construction hoist blocked access to the Henry Miller (now Stephen Sondheim) Theatre. In 2003, Roundabout purchased the building, and the company still hosts Broadway productions there and rents the venue out to other producers.

54 Below, a restaurant and cabaret theatre, operates underneath Studio 54.
