Shakespeare’s subtle, ambiguous and powerful play revolves round two startlingly modern figures: Richard, an autocrat who believes he is divinely sanctioned, and Henry Bolingbroke, a hard-headed pragmatist who has genuine authority.

Throughout history, numerous critically acclaimed actors have played the title role in *Richard II*. Notably, John Gieguld first played the role in 1929 at the Old Vic Theatre, and he reprised the role again in 1937 and 1953. His performance helped bring *Richard II* back into the theatre world after the show’s popularity decreased in the early twentieth century. Other actors who have played the role of the infamous king include Maurice Evans, Paul Scofield, Ian McKellen, Fiona Shaw, and David Tennant. Now, Critic Choice Award-winning actor Jonathan Bailey joins the long list of legendary actors who have played the role.

*Richard II* in London also boasts an award-winning creative team at its helm, including Olivier-winning lighting designer Bruno Poet (*Frankenstein*), Tony and Olivier-winning designer Bob Crowley (*Mary Poppins, An American in Paris*), Tony and Olivier-winning director Nicholas Hytner (*The History Boys, Carousel*), and Emmy-winning casting director Robert Sterne (*The Crown, Game of Thrones*).

## What to watch for

- There have been a variety of film adaptations of *Richard II*, including the 2003 television movie, *Richard II*, starring Mark Rylance.
- The first episode of the BBC television series *The Hollow Crown* was called *Richard II*; it was based on Shakespeare’s play and starred Ben Whishaw.
- In 1995, Fiona Shaw played the role of *Richard II* in the play at the National Theatre. Having a woman in the role caused quite a stir, as some loved it while others were wholly against it.
- It is hard to pinpoint precisely when *Richard II* was written, but on 29 August 1597, the bookseller Andrew Wise entered the play into the Register of the Stationers Company.

Richard II - LON - TodayTix

Shakespeare’s *Richard II*, telling the tale of the fall of King Richard II’s reign, comes to London starring Jonathan Bailey (*Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers*).

Olivier-winning actor Jonathan Bailey (*Fellow Travelers, Bridgerton*) returns to the London stage in an exciting revival of Shakespeare's *Richard II*. Book *Richard II* tickets on London Theatre.

Shakespeare's tale about leadership, identity, and the cost of ambition follows the infamous and charismatic King Richard II, as he battles his cousin Henry Bolingbroke for power when his reign becomes shaky. There's only so much his subjects will take as King Richard's dishonesty and poor political decisions harm the country he's supposed to be leading.

Based on the life of King Richard II, who ruled England from 1377 to 1399, *Richard II* is the first in a tetralogy of historical plays, followed by *Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2*, and *Henry V*.

Through the centuries, the classic play has been staged numerous times worldwide. John Gielgud's portrayal of Richard II at the Old Vic Theatre in 1929 is considered one of the most notable performances of the role. Since then, the role of Richard II has been played by many exceptional actors, including Maurice Evans, Mark Rylance, and Ian McKellen, as well as Fiona Shaw at the National Theatre in 1995.

This revival at the Bridge Theatre has an exceptional creative team, including Tony and Olivier-winning director Nicholas Hytner (*The History Boys, Carousel*), Tony and Olivier-winning designer Bob Crowley (*Mary Poppins, An American in Paris*), and Olivier-winning lighting designer Bruno Poet (*Frankenstein*).

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Company” is the story of Bobby, a relentless bachelor celebrating his 35th birthday with his married friends. But for the first time, the London production of the legendary musical features a woman in the central role and the musical’s first same-sex couple. Starring Rosalie Craig and Broadway legend Patti LuPone, this modern adaptation gives a fascinating insight into love and relationships from a woman’s point of view.

Bobbi spends her birthday contemplating her unmarried state and surrounded by friends who flood her with questions about her own life. Over a series of of dinner parties and conversations about the pros and cons of marriage, Bobbi begins to make sense of her single lifestyle. This enlightening and honest look at adult relationships features some of Sondheim’s most recognisable songs including “Being Alive” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” Directed by Tony Award winner Marianne Elliott, this production reimagines Sondheim’s work for a contemporary audience.
## What to watch for
The original production opened on Broadway in 1970 and won six Tony Awards, and the 2006 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

Stephen Sondheim was consulted from the start about this new adaptation. He took a bit of persuading, but after a recording of a workshop version of the production was sent to him in 2016, he gave it his stamp of approval.

This production marks Patti LuPone’s first appearance on a West End stage in 25 years. Last time she tread the boards in London was in the first London production of “Sunset Boulevard,” in which she originated the role of Norma Desmond.

This will be first gender-reversed production of the show to be officially approved by Sondheim.

The Gielgud Theatre opened on 27 Dec. 1906, and was built for Seymour Hicks. The Gielgud was built as a pair with the [Sondheim Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sondheim-theatre).

The house was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909 by its new manager, Charles Frohman from America. It was known as the Globe Theatre for the next 85 years until a 1994 name change to avoid confusion with [Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/shakespeares-globe-theatre) on the South Bank. It was then that the theatre received its current name, the Gielgud.

Hit shows at the Gielgud Theatre include Simon Stephens' [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time), Jez Butterworth's *The Ferryman* and a gender-swapped revival of Stephen Sondheim's *Company*. ## Gielgud Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The Stalls offers very good sightlines with each row being offset from the one in front. The overhang of the Dress Circle becomes apparent from Row R onwards.

The Dress Circle doesn’t have a strong rake. The stage is not obstructed by the overhang of the Upper Circle.

The Upper Circle seats offer good legroom. The seats curve inwards towards the stage.

After picking up audience buzz at the Barbican, *Les Misérables* opened at the Palace Theatre on 4 Dec. 1985. Its original cast boasts West End and Broadway talent, including Patti LuPone and Michael Ball.

*Les Misérables* in London continues to attract audiences, with fans continuing to revisit this dazzling musical that includes [Boublil and Schönberg's hit songs](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatre-news/news/a-complete-guide-to-all-the-songs-in-les-miserables) such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?"

The newly-free prisoner Jean Valjean builds a new, respectable life for himself but is hunted by the prison guard Javert, all while revolutionaries fight for freedom in France. Throughout the musical, audiences meet Fantine, Eponine, and Cosette, as well as the Thenardiers, and freedom fighters like Marius and Enjolras.
