Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

With great power comes great responsibility. When Princess Elsa of Arendelle discovers she has the ability to turn ordinary objects into ice — including the heart of her playful younger sister, Anna — she distances herself from her family and vows to never let her force become fatal. Years later, after both their parents have died and when Elsa is to be crowned Queen, her powers prove to be stronger than ever. After Anna upsets Elsa at her public coronation, Elsa storms out and accidentally unleashes her power before the court, turning the entire city of Arendelle to ice.

Trying her best to accept her fate as an outcast of society and simply let it go, Elsa isolates herself in a frozen fortress. Proving that the power of love is far stronger than any amount of magic, Anna sets out on an epic quest to rescue her sister from the monster she believes herself to be. Based on the Disney animated film, with new songs from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the musical take a new look at the tale of sisterhood and true love.
## What to watch for
Shortly after “Frozen” opened on Broadway, Patti Murin (who stars as Anna) bravely opened up about her struggle with anxiety. “Even Disney princesses are terrified sometimes,” she wrote.

Caissie Levy, who stars as Elsa, was not originally cast in the initial phases of “Frozen.” After a workshop of the Disney musical, the creative team reopened casting, and director Michael Grandage asked Levy to come in and re-audition.

“Frozen” made history by having Elsa, a princess, don pants in the show’s second act instead of a dress.

“Frozen” had a pre-Broadway tryout at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, where Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” stage adaptation also had its start.

The production’s show art, of the musical’s snow queen enclosed in an intricate icicle, is by London-based artist Olly Moss — picked from over 100 designs.

UPDATE: This production prematurely closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Disney Theatrical's lavish stage adaptation of the two-time Academy Award-winning animated feature film Frozen played the St. James Theatre on Broadway. With costumes and sets sumptuously designed by Christopher Oram, drawing inspiration from its source material as well as Norwegian folklore, the fictional kingdom of Arendelle is brought to stunning, three-dimensional life on stage. In addition, the movie's screenwriter Jennifer Lee has fleshed out the book for the Broadway musical to delve deeper into the torn relationship of the two lead protagonists, sisters Elsa and Anna, whilst the Oscar-winning, husband-and-wife songwriting duo of Robert Lopez and Kristin Anderson-Lopez offer up more than double the amount of songs as those cherished from the animated classic. New additions such as Elsa's anthemic numbers "Dangerous to Dream" and "Monster," as well as Anna's emotionally stirring climax in "True Love," are moving, theatrical alternatives to the infectiously upbeat familiarity of "Love is an Open Door" and "Fixer Upper". And "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" seems to take on a new level of poignancy on stage. Of course, the show-stealing transformation sequence during Elsa's "Let It Go" number at the end of Act I promises the Disney magic Broadway audiences have grown accustomed to over the years and now demand. Kudos to Finn Ross' video design and Jeremy Chernick's special effects, who spectacularly aid the birth of the Snow Queen and her ice palace under the gaze of the mesmerizing aurora borealis.Disney's Frozen - an icy masterpiece of theatricality - is sure to remain one of the hottest tickets in town for a long time to come, so book yours today and experience the winter wonderland of Arendelle come alive on stage in this epic musical for theatregoers of all ages!(Photos by Mary Ellen Matthews / Deen van Meer)
