*School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls* comes to Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, which is known to host revivals of acclaimed plays. In Bioh's lauded comedy, Paulina, the queen bee of Aburi Girls Boarding School in Ghana, believes she is destined for prizes and power. However, when a pageant recruiter comes to her school, Paulina and her classmates pull out all the moves to impress her. But to their surprise, it is a new transfer student — all the way from America — who kicks the competition into a higher, even more personal gear.

With cutting insight about what it means to be a young Black woman in the world of pageants, *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls* is a thrilling, heartfelt, and incisive comedy about how beauty is celebrated — and wielded. This new Broadway production is produced in association with Chase This Productions and Susan Kelechi Watson.

Get *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this New York Times Critic's Pick back on stage. Following its acclaimed bow off Broadway, Tony Award nominee Jocelyn Bioh's play comes to Broadway. *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play* in New York begins in September at Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.

Winning a beauty pageant would change everything, right? That's what Paulina, the queen bee of Aburi Girls Boarding School, thinks in this cutting and hilarious comedy. Competing to be Miss Ghana, Paulina and her classmates will stop at nothing for the chance to have fame and fortune. But when an American transfer student shows up at their school, the contest gets even more competitive — and personal.

Wildly successful, this comedy has gone on to receive 75 regional productions and a United Kingdom premiere in 2023. Now, audiences can see *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play* on Broadway.

In his Critic's Pick review, Jesse Green for The New York Times said the play is a "gleeful African makeover of an American genre." Tackling colorism and how beauty standards differ culture to culture, the New York Times said Bioh "brings the audience to an unexpectedly ambivalent conclusion about the morality of cultural dominance. In it, Americans may realize that, as far as Africa is concerned, we are the mean girls."

This production reunites Bioh with the director of her last hit, *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*: Tony nominee Whitney White stages this play making its Broadway debut. An Obie Award winner, White is known for her strong command of new plays, as with her recent credit, *Liberation*. Tickets to *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play* are now available!

*The Sound of Music* is set in 1940s Austria, where a young woman, Maria, is in training to be a nun but can't quite fit in at the abbey. Spirited and marching to the beat of her own drum, Maria soon finds a new home: she will be the governess to a widower captain's seven children. There, she falls in love with the children — and their strict father — against the backdrop of a changing Austria as Nazis take over and World War II is set to begin. The musical is based on an actual story about the real Maria von Trapp.

*The Sound of Music* is a sweeping story with timeless music including songs like "Maria," "My Favorite Things," and "Edelweiss." With a cast that features children and adults, this show is similarly for all ages. Audiences can expect a story of family and defiance with one of musical theatre's most celebrated scores.
