Tennessee Williams first presented *Suddenly Last Summer* in 1958 as part of Garden District, a double bill that also included his one-act play *Something Unspoken*. Its original Off-Broadway production opened in January of that year as well.

Williams would later adapt the play for the screen with Gore Vidal. The 1959 film starred Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift, and brought this disturbing family drama to a much wider audience on screen.

For this National Theatre revival of *Suddenly Last Summer* in London, Michael Grandage directs Emma Corrin and Harriet Walter in their central roles, with Arty Froushan as Dr Cukrowicz.

This show also boasts a masterful creative team, including set and costume design by Christopher Oram, lighting design by Howard Hudson, music and sound by Adam Cork, and video design by Andrzej Goulding.

Grandage last directed at the National Theatre in 2010 with a staging of *Danton’s Death*.

## What to watch for

- Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn both received Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for the film *Suddenly, Last Summer*.
- Elizabeth Taylor won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture—Drama for the film.
- Anne Meacham won an Obie Award for her performance as Catharine Holly in the play in 1958.
- *Suddenly Last Summer* premiered Off-Broadway on 7 January 1958.

*Suddenly Last Summer* is a play that introduces us to Violet Venable while she’s grieving the death of her beloved son Sebastian. She is also determined to protect his reputation and the version of him she wants the world to remember.

Her niece Catharine Holly sees an issue, though. Catharine was with Sebastian during his final summer of life, and her memories of what happened then threaten to destroy the carefully preserved picture Violet holds of her son.

When Catharine refuses to change her account of events, her credibility and mental state are then called into question. A young doctor, Dr Cukrowicz, is brought into the conflict and must parse out what the truth really is, and whether Catharine’s memories are evidence of a true illness or if they are reflective of a truth everyone is desperate to suppress.

Emma Corrin stars as Catharine opposite Harriet Walter as Violet, with Arty Froushan as Dr Cukrowicz. The company also includes Mofé Akàndé, Emma Beattie, Iwan Davies, and Finty Williams.

Michael Grandage returns to the National Theatre for the first time in over 15 years to direct this exciting production. *Suddenly Last Summer* in London boasts a formidable creative team, including set and costume design by Christopher Oram, lighting design by Howard Hudson, music and sound by Adam Cork, and video design by Andrzej Goulding.

This show is tense and deeply unsettling, asking the audience what happens when protecting your loved ones’ reputations becomes more important than listening to the only person who knows the truth about them.

The Olivier Theatre takes its name from the first artistic director of the [National Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/national-theatre), Laurence Olivier. The auditorium was designed to resemble the theatre at Epidaurus in Greece, with the seating arranged in a fan-like fashion around a circular stage.

The Olivier Theatre is the largest of the three auditoriums at the National Theatre, completed by the [Lyttelton Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/lyttelton-theatre-national) and the [Dorfman Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/dorfman-theatre-national).

The stage itself is famous for its drum-revolve, effectively enabling the stage to split into two allowing scenic changes to take place underneath the stage and then be rotated into place within seconds.

## Olivier Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has two levels, Stalls and Circle, both of which are steeply raked, offering exceptional views from all seats. The Olivier Theatre still manages to feel rather intimate, guaranteeing a connection with the actors on stage.
