William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's winning, high-energy musical has been staged all over the country. Now, it returns to New York on the 20th anniversary of its Broadway bow. That premiere was an auspicious one, making stars of original cast members Celia Keenan-Bolger and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. The theatre legend James Lapine directed. Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her smart, engaging, and hilarious book.

The team behind this revival includes Danny Mefford (director and choreographer), Emily Rebholz (costume designer), David Weiner (lighting designer), Haley Parcher (sound designer), and Teresa L. Williams (scenic designer).

## What to watch for

*The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* is a charming and witty musical about adolescent students competing to win a local spelling competition while coping with teenage issues along the way.

Get *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see the first New York production of this beloved musical. *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* off Broadway comes to New World Stages hot off of its celebrated run at the Kennedy Center in an acclaimed production directed by Danny Mefford.

This Tony Award winner is a J-O-Y: following a gaggle of awkward teens trying to spell their way to the top, *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* musical runs for a limited time only this fall and winter. With a quirky and warm score and a hilarious plot, *...Spelling Bee* made a splash on Broadway in 2005; now, it comes back to New York to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The fresh production promises to be a winner whether you saw the original or are experiencing it for the first time.

That original production, directed by James Lapine, made stars out of actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson (*Modern Family*) and Celia Keenan-Bolger (*To Kill a Mockingbird*). The delectable score by the late, great William Finn (*Falsettos*) features humdingers like "I Speak Six Languages," "Pandemonium," and "The I Love You Song," and Rachel Sheinkin won a Tony Award for her delightful book.

With a cast of colorful characters, including wise students and not-so-wise adults, the musical is a charmer thanks to its inventive structure: the audience plays an active role in the action. For each show, audience participants are chosen to compete alongside the actors, adding an improvisational element to the show, which makes no two the same. Earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, *...Spelling Bee* has been performed in gymnasiums, community theaters, and schools alike. Now, it's back in the Big Apple, or as it's also spelled, N-Y-C.

This is not your average school dance. Featuring a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Beguelin, “The Prom” is a modern musical about the power of love, music, and community. Inspired by true events — most notably, the 2010 controversy in which a Mississippi high school canceled the prom when 18-year-old Constance McMillen planned to take her girlfriend — the musical turns the spotlight on a young lesbian love story.

Emma is dating closeted cheerleader Alyssa and plans to finally go public with their relationship at the prom, but her classmates and friends are trying to stand in their way. When the prom gets canceled and the story makes headlines, a group of veteran Broadway performers come to the rescue. After finding a news article about the controversy, they set out to invade the conservative town and save the day.

Recommended for 10 + (Some adult language.) Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
## What to watch for
“The Prom” pulls from multiple stories of same-sex discrimination in high schools for inspiration — and then throws in a Broadway-style plot twist.

Caitlin Kinnunen, who stars as Emma, was home-schooled, so she never went to a prom before “The Prom.”

“The Prom” comes complete with inside jokes for Broadway enthusiasts. Look out for references to “Carrie,” Fosse, and Bernadette Peters, as well as a costume homage to designer William Ivey Long.

Get suited up, folks! Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, the new musical comedy The Prom officially opened on Broadway on November 15, 2018, following previews from October 23.This exuberant, original musical has wowed both critics and audience members a like and has established itself as a theatre geek's dream! Packed with in-jokes about the Broadway theatre community and its colorful players, The Prom lovingly pokes fun at itself and the industry in general and is widely regarded as a love letter to Broadway. This element of the production is an added bonus for those in the know. For the more occasional theatregoer, The Prom offers up a universal message of love and breaking down barriers.A high school student named Emma wants to take her girlfriend as her date to the prom at her local high school in Edgewater, Indiana, to the shock horror of the school's PTA members. She is therefore excluded from the celebrations and a motley crew of Broadway actors (desperate for some positive publicity) come rushing to her aid to fight a noble cause (albeit for self-centered motivations). In this simple premise, two worlds collide as Old School Broadway meets Middle America "High School Musical" in a clash of ideologies and cultures. These worlds are also brilliantly reflected in Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin's hybrid score which merges old school (numbers such as "Zazz" and "The Lady's Improving") with high school musical ("Tonight Belongs to You" and "Time to Dance") effortlessly. The latter numbers are also enhanced by Casey Nicholaw's signature, frenetic choreography in the hands (and feet) of this uber-talented ensemble.Of course, the Indiana townsfolk learn a lesson in acceptance, but the Broadway veterans also learn a valuable lesson of their own... namely, that it isn't always about them! Sometimes the spotlight needs to be shone on the injustices of the world and The Prom is doing its bit to shine its own dazzling spotlight at the Longacre Theatre. If you've ever felt like an outsider; if you've ever felt misunderstood or alone; or if you just can't get enough of an 11 o'clock number, then this Prom is one you really don't want to miss! The world premiere production of The Prom was staged at The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA, in 2016.(Photos by Deen Van Meer)
