Bobby Darin was an American legend whose songs moved in and out of genres, from jazz and swing to rock and roll and pop. In 1958, Darin co-wrote and recorded his first million-selling single, "Splish Splash", which was followed by the singer’s own tune, "Dream Lover.” Covers of "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea" followed, which brought him worldwide fame. In 1962, he won a Golden Globe Award for his first film, Come September, co-starring his first wife, actress Sandra Dee.

That marriage is depicted in the musical, along with other thrilling chapters in Darin’s singular life that was all too short. Audiences can expect a riveting performance from Jonathan Groff, always a commanding stage presence, and a deep dive into the one-of-a-kind life of Darin, which featured shocking family surprises, timeless songs, and plenty of star wattage that kept the party going long after the nightclub closed down.

# What to watch for
- This musical transforms its theater to create a more immersive event and heightened experience. Here, the Circle in the Square becomes a dazzling nightclub.

Circle In The Square Theater

Designed by Alan Sayles, the Circle in the Square Theatre (along with its much larger sibling, the [Gershwin Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/gershwin-theatre)) is inside the confines of the Paramount Plaza office tower. The Circle in the Square Theatre was built in 1970 as the Uris Brothers tore down the former Capitol Theatre in order to construct the tower.

The current Broadway theatre is the successor of a same-named Off-Broadway theatre, which operated from 1950 to 1995 at multiple locations in Greenwich Village. The Circle in the Square repertory company staged its first Broadway production — a revival of *Mourning Becomes Electra* — at its current venue on November 15, 1972.

The venue is one of the smallest and most intimate spaces on Broadway. Productions are generally staged in the round, as audiences are seated on three sides of the stage. The theatre is also associated with the Circle in the Square Theatre School, the only accredited drama school attached to a Broadway house.

## How to get to the Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway

The Circle in the Square Theatre is accessible by subway, with the closest stop being 50th St. on the C or E line. The 50th St. stop on the 1 line is also nearby. The closest bus stop to the theatre is 8th Ave/W 50th St. on the M50 line.

Emmy winner and Tony nominee Sean Hayes is a 2023 Tony Award winner for playing pianist, actor, and comedian Oscar Levant in Doug Wright's new play *Good Night, Oscar*. Get *Good Night, Oscar* tickets on New York Theatre Guide and see his unmissable performance.

The *Good Night, Oscar* play is set in 1958, when Levant made his first appearance on *The Tonight Show* with Jack Paar. That guest spot would be the first of many, but that one cemented Levant's legacy as a notorious wit. He worked uproarious jokes into a frank discussion of his own mental illness and addiction, which shocked, enlightened, and enthralled audiences in equal measure.

The TV censors may have been working overtime, but Levant still managed to change the face of American television, albeit at his own expense. Indeed, once Levant stopped appearing as a guest on his show, Paar would regularly sign off with, "Good night, Oscar Levant, wherever you are" — hence the play's title.

Levant amassed a storied career before his death at age 65. He was primarily a musician known for playing George Gershwin's compositions and composing music for more than 20 Hollywood films. It's fitting that he has a Broadway show about him, as Levant himself performed, composed, and conducted on Broadway.

Prior to *Good Night, Oscar* on Broadway, the show had its world premiere at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in spring 2022, where it received rave reviews. Hayes, who is best known for his Emmy-nominated performance as Jack McFarland on *Will & Grace*, also starred as Levant in that iteration. He now makes his third Broadway appearance with *Good Night, Oscar*, following *An Act of God* in 2016 and *Promises, Promises* in 2010.

## Is *Good Night, Oscar* a true story?

*Good Night, Oscar* is based on a true story. It is based on Levant's real-life television appearances, career, and personal life. Good Night, Oscar Broadway Tickets | Official NY Theatre Guide

Will & Grace's Sean Hayes reprises his role as infamously witty pianist Oscar Levant in the Broadway premiere of this show, fresh off a hit run in Chicago. Go back to 1958, when Levant shocked America with his unflinching, self-reflective humor on live TV. Learn more about tickets to this dark comedy that will have audiences buzzing.

Prior to the events of the play, Levant had built up a celebrated career as a concert pianist, actor, and composer in both Hollywood and New York. He wasn't necessarily trying to be an infamous wit when he appeared on Paar — he just wanted to discuss his battles with addiction and mental illness that left him hospitalized. Such public talk was practically unheard of, so audiences — and censors — tempered it by calling it comedy.

*Good Night, Oscar* is Wright's first play on Broadway in nearly 20 years, since his 2004 debut with *I Am My Own Wife*. That one-man show won Best Play at the Tony Awards, along with the Pulitzer Prize. In between that show and *Good Night, Oscar*, he wrote the books for four Broadway musicals: *Grey Gardens*, *The Little Mermaid*, *Hands on a Hardbody*, and *War Paint*.

Hayes has played two previous Broadway roles: God in *An Act of God* and Chuck Baxter in *Promises, Promises*. He first played the role of Levant when *Good Night, Oscar* premiered in Chicago in 2022. The production received critical acclaim under the direction of Lisa Peterson, who now makes her Broadway debut after a 30-plus year Off-Broadway career.

## What to Watch For

- After Levant stopped appearing on *Jack Paar*, Paar would often end his shows by saying, "Good night, Oscar Levant, wherever you are." That's where Wright's play gets its title!
- Levant soon became a regular on Paar’s show and reportedly began to make $10,000 per episode. The average salary for a guest at the time was $320!
- As a pianist, Levant was known for his recordings of George Gershwin's compositions. Gershwin appears as a character in *Good Night, Oscar* on Broadway.
- During the 1940s, Levant became the highest-paid concert pianist in the U.S. for a time.
- Did you know Levant was on Broadway? He was involved with five Broadway shows: one as a performer, two as a conductor, and three as a songwriter. (He conducted one of the shows he composed.) Plus, he starred in the movie musical *An American in Paris*, which was adapted for Broadway in 2014.
- Levant inspired the fictional title pianist, played by Peter Sellers, in the 1964 film *The World of Henry Orient*.
