Brooklyn Laundry Feat. Cecily Strong and David Mayas - Landscape

See Cecily Strong and David Zayas star in Oscar-, Tony Award-, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer John Patrick Shanley's latest world-premiere play, *Brooklyn Laundry*. Get *Brooklyn Laundry* tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Three sisters and a guy walk into the laundromat he owns — no, that's not the start of a joke, but the premise of the *Brooklyn Laundry* play, which Shanley also directs. This tragicomic story sees the quartet go through life's savage tricks, little things that turn out to be big things, and all the other ups and downs that come with fully being an adult.

Shanley, a Bronx native, often sets his plays in New York City, and the same is true for *Brooklyn Laundry* off Broadway (as the title suggests). Similarly, New York's Manhattan Theatre Club, which presents *Brooklyn Laundry*, has long been a theatrical home for Shanley. The nonprofit theatre company has presented nine of his previous plays, beginning with *Italian American Reconciliation* in 1986. MTC is also the last place Shanley directed one of his own new plays: *The Portuguese Kid*, starring Jason Alexander, in 2017.

Fittingly for an NYC-born playwright, *Brooklyn Laundry* is actually the third Shanley play going up in the city in the 2023-24 season alone. The production follows an Off-Broadway revival of his early work [*Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32606-danny-and-the-deep-blue-sea) in fall 2023 and a Broadway revival of his Pulitzer- and Tony-winning drama [*Doubt*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/30042-doubt-a-parable-tickets), beginning performances just four days before *Brooklyn Laundry* in New York.

Aside from his prolific theatre career, Shanley is best known for writing the Oscar-winning screenplay of the film *Moonstruck* — another story famously set in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Laundry - NYC - NYTG

Don't miss the latest new Off-Broadway premiere by John Patrick Shanley. The Oscar and Tony Award winner (*Doubt, Moonstruck*) also directs his story of three sisters and a laundromat owner weathering life's everyday challenges, romances, and tricks.

The four main characters of the *Brooklyn Laundry* play are three sisters and the male owner of the title laundromat. The play is also partly a love story between two of the characters: the down-on-his luck Owen and chronically single, financially unstable Fran, who start off disliking each other.

*Brooklyn Laundry* is Shanley's latest new play since 2021, when he premiered *Candlelight* at the New Ohio Theatre. It's his 27th total play since his first, *Welcome to the Moon*, premiered in 1982. All but one of his plays premiered in New York (save his third play, *Savage in Limbo*, in London).

## What to watch for

- John Patrick Shanley is having a renaissance this season — a "Shanleyssance," if you will. *Brooklyn Laundry* premieres just after revivals of his early play *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* and his Pulitzer-winning masterpiece *Doubt*.
- Anyone who's ever quoted "Snap out of it!" a la Cher has Shanley to thank. He won his Oscar for writing the screenplay for *Moonstruck*.
- Shanley grew up in the Bronx, so he usually sets his works in the five boroughs. *Brooklyn Laundry*, of course, is no exception!
- The last time Shanley directed one of his own plays (*The Portuguese Kid*) was in 2017, also for Manhattan Theatre Club.
- More recently, in 2020, Shanley directed a film adaptation of his Best Play Tony nominee, *Outside Mullingar*. The movie is titled *Wild Mountain Thyme* and stars Emily Blunt and Jamie Dorman.

Special mention goes to their yearly Fall for Dance festival, an exciting event that showcases the arts performances from international dance companies and uniquely affordable tickets.

Architect Harry P. Knowles designed New York City Center, which was built by Clinton and Russell in 1923 for the Shriners under the name of The Mecca Temple. Amid the financial crash of 1929, the building became city property after the Shriners were unable to keep up with tax payments.

Former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and New York City Council President Newbold Morris decided to convert the temple into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. The building opened as a theatre in December 1943.

New York City Center is known for its annual Encores! productions since 1994, which restage seldom revived American musicals in concert or semi-staged incarnations. The venue received a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2000.

Since its launch, New York City Center has become one of the city’s prime venues for dance.

In addition to the 2,557-seat mainstage, the facility houses two smaller theatres — Stage I and Stage II, where Manhattan Theatre Club has hosted its Off-Broadway productions since 1984 — and four studios.

Not only is *Cost of Living* making its Broadway debut, but so are many of its cast and creative team: Majok, Bonney, Sullivan, and Mozgala. Zayas previously appeared in *Anna and the Tropics* in 2003, and Young made her debut last fall in *Clyde's* opposite Uzo Aduba, earning a 2022 Tony Award nomination.

The show had its world-premiere production at Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016, starring Sullivan and Mozgala alongside Wendell Pierce and Rebecca Naomi Jones. (Pierce is also on Broadway this fall, leading the latest revival of *Death of a Salesman*.) Between *Cost of Living*'s subsequent 2017 Off-Broadway premiere and current Broadway debut, the show premiered in London in 2019, also starring Sullivan. Majok also premiered two other shows off Broadway: *queens* in 2018 at Lincoln Center Theater, and the critically acclaimed *Sanctuary City* in 2021 at New York Theatre Workshop.

Majok is a Polish American playwright who grew up in New Jersey; *Cost of Living* is set in the town of Bayonne there. She once said, in an interview with American Theatre, that she gets into her best "flow" when "writing working-class folks from Jersey, or immigrants — particularly Eastern European immigrant women." Ironically, the playwright continued, "That’s probably the most pleasurable that writing gets for me. I usually hate writing. It’s agony for me."

## What to Watch For

- Earlier this year, Manhattan Theatre Club produced the Broadway debut of *How I Learned to Drive*, which, like *Cost of Living*, was a Pulitzer Prize-winning play featuring some of its original Off-Broadway stars (Mary-Louise Parker, David Morse, and Johanna Day) and Off-Broadway director (Mark Brokaw). There's a trend here!
- *Cost of Living* is a memory play, which means that it begins in the present (not necessarily "today," but whatever time and place the play is supposed to be set) and then jumps back in time, showing scenes from the past that a character remembers. This show opens with Eddie in the present and flashes back to three months before — but we won't spoil what's happening in the present that prompts him to look back.
- Majok originally wrote Eddie's opening piece as a standalone monologue before expanding it into a full-length play.
- Sullivan and Mozgala have the same conditions in real life — double leg amputation and cerebral palsy, respectively — that their characters do in the play. In fact, Majok wrote the part of John specifically for Mozgala.
- Before being an actress, Sullivan was an athlete, having competed in track and field in the Paralympic Games.
- When Majok's first major play, *Ironbound*, got its first reading, it did so alongside Dominique Morisseau's *Skeleton Crew*. The two playwrights have been friends ever since, and MTC produced the Tony-nominated Broadway debut of *Skeleton Crew* last season.

Martyna Majok's 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning play receives its Broadway premiere after a celebrated Off-Broadway run with Manhattan Theatre Club. Get Cost of Living tickets on New York Theatre Guide.Cost of Living is a play about caregiving, alienation, and connection. There are two central pairs of characters: Ani and Eddie, and John and Jess. Ani and Eddie are estranged spouses, but following an accident that leaves her a double above-the-knee amputee, he returns to care for her. Elsewhere, John, who has cerebral palsy, hires Jess to assist him with daily tasks. But Ani and John's disabilities, and their companions' roles as caregivers, are the least of what this play is about. The loud-mouthed firecracker Ani is bitter at Eddie for leaving her and equally bitter about his coming back, yet he persistently does his best to lighten her mood and be there for her. And John and Jess are both Princeton grads, but while John holds many privileges because of that education, his wealth, and his whiteness, Jess is barely making ends meet by working for John. As these two couples navigate their own issues of race, class, personality, and more, it gets less clear who exactly is caring for whom. And the pairs' stories eventually collide, too. After a world premiere at Williamstown Theatre Festival, Manhattan Theatre Club premiered Cost of Living off Broadway in 2017 to acclaim; the show was a New York Times Critic's Pick. In a five-star review of Cost of Living in 2017, our critic said: "Cost of Living reawakens my belief in the poetry of theater and highlights its purpose as the critical eye on our human existence. On the face of it you might think that Cost of Living is a melancholy story, but Ms. Majok brilliantly infuses her characters and dialogue with biting humor."Coincidentally, in the 2021-22 season, MTC also mounted the Broadway premiere of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play with its original Off-Broadway stars and director: How I Learned to Drive, starring Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse and directed by Mark Brokaw.Majok is a Polish American playwright whose break came in 2014 with the play Ironbound. She followed it up with Cost of Living, Queens, and Sanctuary City, which debuted with New York Theatre Workshop in 2021 and earned a five-star New York Theatre Guide review. Cost of Living marks Majok's Broadway debut.Tickets to Cost of Living in New York are on sale now.
